We stayed three nights at Pensao Nova Sintra, and we can't say enough about Rui Bernardo and his excellent staff, especially young Luis. We arrived early in the morning, jet-lagged from Canada, and Rui had our fresh, bright and lovely room available for us on the first floor overlooking the patio and with a superb view of the Moorish Castle. Our room was very well appointed, and breakfast, served in the cheery dining room, was more than adequate: fresh rolls, cheese, cold cuts, yoghurt, jams, butter, juice, coffee or tea. We also highly recommend having a mid-day meal at their patio restaurant -- the quality and quantity of the food is excellent. My husband enjoyed fresh pargo, which was rarely available on the rest of our trip.
Rui was also extremely helpful, offering dinner suggestions, recommending sites to see, etc. We were given a home number to call at any time if we had any questions or needs, and indeed, upon our leaving, Luis insisted that wherever we were in Portugal, we were welcome to call for advice! We knew this was genuine -- they could not have been more accommodating throughout our stay. Rui even sent us off with complimentary chocolate-covered almonds and a replica of Pena Palace!
The location is excellent -- a short walk from the train station arriving from Lisbon, and the establishment, Rui's birth place, is bright, clean, well appointed, and maintained with love. But it's the friendly and helpful attention that is the real plus: Rui even contacted our next host in Lisbon for us to ensure arrival time, and promptly made sure we knew exactly how to reach our destination, using Virtual Earth.
We look forward to a return visit, and recommend their small hotel absolutely!

I spent three nights at the Nova Sintra in May 2008. A fine hotel with a great location in a wonderful area. I actually stayed in two different rooms at the hotel. The first night in a full-bed room on the second (3rd by US definition) on the back of the hotel. The other nights in a smaller room but on the first floor on the front of the hotel. Both were very comfortable.
The hotel is perfectly sited for exploring -- and when I asked Rui Bernardo about where to buy the one-price all day ticket for the Scotturb busses, he gave me one gratis -- saved about 8 Euros I think.
Breakfast is simple -- bread, cheese, meat, yogurt, juice, good coffee.

We loved everything about our stay in Sintra, except that it was too short! This hotel has a great location -- very close to the train station and walking distance to all the sights (or the tourist bus). The hotel room was neat and very clean, they stored our bags for us after check-out, gave great meal recommendations and helped us with any questions overall, they were really terrific! The terrace is also a huge plus, it has a great view of the castle and is a great place to lounge in the sun. I would definitely return to Nova Sintra!

This hotel was a major highlight of a two month trip around North America and Europe. Very convenient for exploring Lisbon, Sintra itself and the coast nearby. Trains were very regular and quick to Lisbon and a change to the Metro. It had the benefit of being in a very relaxing, peaceful spot, up above the smog of Lisbon. We had a ground floor room that was spotlessly clean and large. The breakfasts were excellent and fresh, in a nice sunny room, with the little pastries a nice touch. No parking at the hotel itself, but a few nearby streets that had free parking all day - we never had a problem, and there is a loading bay right in front of the main entrance. We needed extras for our daughter, and there was a small convenience store open all hours just down the street. The train station was perfectly placed (although the staff were rather unfriendly and unhelpful), and there was a small but good variety of restaurants nearby. But the best part was the hotel and the lovely owner Rui Bernardo, who was extremely helpful, friendly and fun to talk with. His staff were also always smiling and said Bom dia, Boa tarde, Boa noite as they busily went about cleaning.
Rui even gave me his personal mobile phone number as suggested I call him 24 hours if I needed any information when day tripping in Lisbon. He was clearly very proud of his hotel (rightly so!) and gave us a lovely quality wooden pen in a wooden box as a souvenier of their 50th year. Being Aussies we rarely tip heavily, but the amount of help Rui gave us, we made an exception. Would love to revisit again one day.

My husband and I stayed here for one night in early September. We only booked a day in advance and were fortunate enough to get a room on a Saturday night for a decent price. The owner was very kind and accomodating. Our room was rather small and a bit dark, but had to little windows that opened up to reveal a lovely view and a delicious cross-breeze. We felt very comfortable and relaxed and enjoyed the quiet, while knowing that we were just a short walk down to both the bus stop and the train station. The breakfast was served in a pretty room with a wall of windows; a nice start to the day.

Why pay Lisbon City prices for a run down City Centre hotel or pensao, when you can stay in beautiful Sintra for half the price. Wake up to fresh air and fresher views, jump on a train, and in 30 minutes you're in Lisbon City Centre ready to explore.

This great piece of advice from a couple of locals sent me in the direction of the hills of Sintra and the Pensao Nova Sintra.

Great location, a short walk from the train station, especially if you've got a case to carry.

Friendly family run Pensao who will happily give you their time and advice and that personal touch, so lacking in some of the Lisboa City Centre alternatives.

What a view from that outdoor terrace as you sip your Galao! You won't get this from your Lisboa city alternatives.

Rooms are good value. Must admit I was little disappointed with my top floor room. The sharply sloping ceiling proved a vertical challenge, even at my very average height of 175cm. Half of the main room is affected as is the entrance to the ensuite bathroom which necessitated a quick duck of the head at each visit.

Don't be put off. I suspect this feature is limited to the top floor only and that lower levels are probably fine.

There is no lift and the steep narrow stairs will get those endorphins pumping. But seriously, if you can't handle a few stairs, you shouldn't be venturing out to this beautiful but hilly Portuguese gem of Sintra.

Location, value for money, views from that terrace and the hospitality of Rui Bernado and staff make this Pensao a great choice for your Portuguese visit. I'll be back!! Obrigado. :)
