If you are coming to Sintra, please do this magnificent town justice and stay at least a night ! The magical town is even more beautiful during the evening and there is so much to take in, a day tour is not enough.
As stated in the title, this hotel sits on a slope leading into the town center. In fact, you can see the two enormous kitchen chimneys of the National Palace from most rooms. The rooms are modern and elegant, very clean and the bathtub is big enough for two adults and a toddler. (Bathtubs may only be available in some rooms) The staff are very friendly, courteous, helpful, resourceful. Best concierge service I have received in a hotel in years. Their breakfast buffet serves both continental and hot breakfasts, as well as speciality sweets of Sintra. They seem to bake their pastel de Nata on site, I had warm ones during my two night stay.
Another perk of this hotel is that across the street from the hotel is a small playground which is enclosed from roads. It seemed to close after 19h00 or so, and it has slides ( one big and one smaller one), rocking horses/ bikes/ etc, and swings. It is very well maintained and clean. It is the perfect place to take your toddler for a romp before hitting some sites.
The only down side to this hotel, is that there is only three parking spaces available and that the owner and their family seem to have priority usage of this coveted space. In our case, they were having tea and so we were told to park half a mile down the road in the public parking lot for where they would provide free parking tickets. Yes, the whole town of Sintra seems to have a lack of parking, and yes, in the end we got the parking in front of the hotel after driving around for parking space and then waiting around, all of which took my husband about a little short of a hour. But in my opinion, if they are advertising on hotel reservation websites that they have parking available, this should be made available for the guests of the hotel. BTW, we were also told that there would be somebody to take the car key to park it for us if need be but this was not the case when we got to the hotel. We strongly feel that the parking situation could be dealt with more efficiently (emailing a map indicating parking areas perhaps, or warning of lack of parking upon booking and reservation for parking as well? ) .
Also, when you make a booking, the hotel will send you a form for you to fill out, about preferences of number of pillows, flowers/ chocolates/ birthday cakes, etc ... It adds a nice touch to personalize your stay, but some of these services are for a fee which is not indicated in the initial form. One would think they would save their clients time or themselves the embarrassment of corresponding back and forth.
But despite what is mentioned in the last two paragraphs, I would still recommend this hotel. The hospitality of the staff is superb, the location is great and the plus side far outweighs the negatives.
