Owner description: To the west, the Park of Pena also contains the Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla, recently reopened to the public after a long process of recovery and restoration after the building was destroyed by fire in 1999. The Chalet was built by King Ferdinand II and his second wife Elise Hensler, Countess of Edla, between 1864 and 1869, in keeping with the Alpine chalet model that was in vogue in Europe at that time. The building is extremely picturesque, characterised by the horizontal marking of the external plaster, painted to imitate timber cladding, and by the extensive use of cork as a decorative element, covering door and window frames, eaves and verandas, as well as tree trunks backing onto the facades to support climbing plants.

Recently opened. We went to see it as soon as we could. You can reach it by a narrow road but the signage is good and has a small parking lot above the entrance door.
The Chalet is small but very beautiful. It is empty, but it is worth to see the outside, perfectly framed in landscape and the decoration on the walls inside.
And also stroll in the park. It has a beautiful view of the Pena Palace, you can even take a walk up there (long and uphill). But even that does not go for a hike is worth taking a walk among magnolias and azaleas in bloom. It's springtime and its beautiful.

Its a wonderful place to visit in Sintra, you cannot miss it. The Chalet was recently recovered as also the gardens around it. The history behind this Chalet its a very romantic one and you will be delighted with some details, like the rock from where the Countess of Edla could see the King's palace at the distance. I highly recommend this visit.

Tourists beware: there are parts of the parque which are under renovation, especially the chalet of the countess. There is practically nothing to see in the chalet - it's empty - which no one at the ticket booth will mention. Yet, full fare is charged.
