I spent three days in Sintra and this was the nicest of the sites that I visited. The house was average but the grounds were amazing, full of hidden tunnels, grottos and waterfalls. A must see in Sintra.

One of the most spectacular places I visited in my entire life, and all this for a very acceptable price.

All the spots from the beautiful waterfalls, gardens and buildings to the mysterious caves and wells.

An absolute must if you are visiting or passing through Sintra.

Day-tripped from Lisbon by train to Cascais and then by bus via Cabo de Roca on to Sintra (Please note that this bus does not take 40 minutes as it says in Lonely Planet, it actually took around 70 minutes - this doesn't include any time if you plan on getting off at Cabo de Roca). Due to time constraints, had to make a choice as to where we would spend our time in Sintra. Had had lots of recommendations from contacts in Lisbon about Quinta de Regaleira. It didn't disappoint. Kids loved the tunnels and the initiation well. Lots of winding paths to allow the kids to burn off some energy after the train/bus ride. Interesting features throughout the gardens as well as the house - towers to climb, caves, fountains/waterfalls. We all thought that the mirror-floored library on the top floor of the house was freaky but amazing - like stepping out onto a platform that will fall to the next level.
Also great views up to Moorish Castle and Pena Palace from here.
Good advice from attendant at Cais de Sodre station in Lisbon was to pay for day train pass ($15.60 each) which covered the cost of train from Lisbon to Cascais, bus from Cascais to Sintra, all public transport buses in Sintra, and train from Sintra back to Lisbon, which was definitely cheaper than having to pay for each leg.

Lovely house, but the grounds are amazing. The entire time I thought "this person must really be into fairy tales". It's like a fantasy land. Mini-turrets with stairs everywhere. Very fairy-tale-ish. Wish our kids were with us. Bring your headlamp or torch for the tunnels. They're poorly lit with a ground string lights that don't cut it. But the tunnels are cool, and lead to the initiation well (definitely the highlight). You MUST go! Easy to get there on foot from the train station (follow the signs, we didn't have a map). Train from Rossio Station in Lisbon, runs about every 1/2 hour, takes 39 minutes (4.80E round-trip each adult). In Sintra, go left out of the train station you can follow the signs. Enjoy! 7.50E entry for adults.
