“Leave time to walk the grounds”

The amazingly detailed drawings inside the house show what went into creating this work of art, but the grounds and gardens are equally arresting. The chapel is perfect in every way.

“Lovely walks on a nice day”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

Sintra is definitely far more enjoyable in the sunshine and one of it's main attractions, a Quinta da Regaleira, is no exception. The grounds are enchanting. Climb the old stone towers if you dare and explore the dark, spooky winding caves below (but bring a torch!! It's pitch black.) My favourite bit was the Poço Iniciático (Iniciatic Well) where you can see the walls winding all the way down to the mosaic-tiled floor. However, looking down did prove testing to my vertigo! If you're afraid of heights, it's more comfortable to see the effect from the middle steps rather than the very top. The Quinta (House) itself is grand and hosts an exhibition about the family that used it as a summer residence in the 19th Century and also about, Luigi Manini, the Italian architect who devoted 14 years of his life designing and building the house and the grounds. Step out onto the Panoramic Terrace for spectacular views of the city on the horizon.

My advice would be to take your time walking around the grounds and bring water. There are many stairs and uphill paths that will give your legs a good workout (but also many benches to stop for a breather as well!)

“A brilliant folly of a garden”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

This may not be written large in attractions to visit in Sintra, but it is a worthwhile visit to take yourself back to your childhood and explore the castles, waterfalls and underground passages in a wonderful garden. The house is obviously of interest as well and the entry fee is reasonable at 6 euros for s self tour.We also parked right outside the entrance.

“An attraction not to be missed”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

With the many things to see and do in and around Sintra, one might not have time to see everything that they would like. That was certainly the case for us, but I am very glad that we visited the Quinta Da Regaleira. We have toured many personal estates before, but never one like this. The grounds are just amazing! From towers, to tunnels to trails, it was great fun exploring this beautiful place. It is hard to believe that it was built as a summer home! Oh... and the house is nice, too.... but it is really the grounds and all the associated structures and accoutrements that make this place special! I highly recommend that this be included on everyone's Sintra agenda.

“A Beautiful Estate”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

An amazing property. Beautifully furnished interiors and a garden that is really a well maintained forest with statues, fountains and pools. Not to be missed in Sintra.
