First off,we took the bus from funchal which gave it a more backpackery sense...especially cuz you have to get off at quinta grande and stop is like nowhere...then we asked some locals how to get there and it meant going down about 2-3 kms (easy laid back walking just watch out for cars as there is NO SIDEWALK).
just before the lift theres a beautiful spot for an amazing view and then the lift...haha so cool and a little scary when the guy tells you that after every trip you have to allow for 3-4 mins for the engine and cables to cool down;)
Get down and in the way to the restaurant you can spot some nice fruit trees and such, then the restaurante which has verg good prices (you would think its a rip off but no..a 330 beer and pepsi light 3.1 euros!)
Just sitting and admiring the soundof water and waves...its not high season so its so quiet. The lift costs 7.5 euros for a return ticket.dont expect a lovely beach its mostly rocky.
On the way back we asked the guy on the upper level to order a taxi for us...25 euros from there to the hotel in funchal.
Pure fun and relaxing!!

We just picked up on this from an almost throw away comment in the 'Sunflower tours and walks book' but was really glad we went. The cost is still 7.50e return per adult and whilst the lift is pretty basic, it does the job. The views going up and down the 300m cliff are great, especially when you have a waterfall next to you. Not good for those with disability issues as there are still a considerable number of steps to negotiate.

This was a real get away from it all place, which we really loved. You can sunbathe, stroll, swim, fish and chill out at a great restaurant which looks very basic but serves great food and good prices. Plenty of different fruit trees to walk by.

Thoroughly recommended.

Firstly I avoid heights, usually, I dislike flying, cable cars and exposed lifts. Well Fajã dos padres is an extreme example of my worst nightmare. Yet I actually enjoyed the experience and the views on the decent were stunning.
When you arrive at the bottom and walk down the remaining steps you enter a lush plantation of exotic fruit trees. This leads down to a beach cafe with ample seating.
Now the cafe was unbelievable value with a good selection of tasty food. Once you are down, they have you as a captive audience and in theory could charge anything, but the prices were very reasonable. All the staff at the shop, the lift and even general grounds people were chatty and friendly.
The beach area is a sheltered south facing sun trap, we spent the whole afternoon soaking up the sun even though it is well into November.
There is a small pier which creates a sheltered bathing area with easy access to deep calm and surprisingly warm water to bath in. Then fresh water showers to wash off after.
This place is quiet, clean and perfect for spending a relaxing day.
The w/c facilities were very good spec, also there was no need to worry about possessions as everyone has to use the lift to arrive and depart, We were happy to just leave our bags and swim.

Madeira is a paradise, but if could divide the island in some other small bits of paradise, "Faja dos Padres" is certainly one of those. Its an amazing place, it's a farm with vines and mango trees, near to ocean... great to a full day staying, or you can even reserve a house for a night!

We did not know much what to expect, walked the few steps from parking place to the elevator, and then got stunned. The elevator falls down to the beach by the steep wall. Down you can not do much, although there are a few sunbeds. We walked by the stoney beach and listened to the waves. And had an amazing sandes de atum in the restaurant. But the best on all of this was the feeling of privacy, apart from a few locals we were almost alone here and spent much more time then expected just doing nothing.
