We wanted to add to what has already been written by other reviewers with directions to get here on public transport. We found them quite hard to get!

Take a number 4 Rodoeste bus from Funchal to Ponta Do Sol. the bus stop in Funchal is opposite the marina on the shore front, right by the Rodoeste information kiosk. It leaves at around 5 minutes past the hour. Get off this but at Quinta Grande (ask the bus driver to tell you where to get off, and tell him you're bound for Faja Dos Padres. The bus drivers arer fantastic - ours told us where to get off and pointed us off down the path to Faja).

After you get off the bus, pass a house on the left side of the road (in the direction of travel) and head down a set of concrete steps immediately after the house. You are bound for the motorway that you can see at the bottom of the valley. We took a couple of shortcuts on more sets of steps through terraced gardens, missing out parts of the snaking road. Pass under the motorway by the side of the road headed for the coast and you will see a sign for Faja. the road veers to the right, keep going and going past a few houses until finally you will round a corner and see the top of the lift.

It was a 1 hour (taking it easy), approx 3K walk from the bus to the beach including going down the amazing cliff side lift.

To get back to Funchal reverse your steps back up the way again. Allow an hour to get from the beach to the bus stop. The no 4 bus passes through that stop more or less on the hour, every hour, to take you back to Funchal. I would plan to arrive at the bus stop at quarter to the hour to be sure.

The bus ride costs 2.75 E and takes about an hour - it's a spectacle in it' own right! We really enjoyed the bus ride!

Back to Faja - the cafe is amazing and very reasonable. Mains around 9-10 E and sandwiches around 4-5 E. There is a jetty for swimming off and sun loungers (2 E charge for these). Take your own beach towel and picnic blanket and find a spot on the pebble beach or on the jetty. the quite fantastic lift down the cliff side costs 7.50 E and is WELL worth it!

I just found this pace by chance on an internet search and I knew automatically that I had to stay on this place. NO REGRETS at all! The place is like a small paradise on earth. The elevator with the stunning views over the Ocean and the "Fajã" brings you to a little Eden! The stuff is really really nice, the food is amazing and the views are just incredible! You can walk through the plot full of tropical fruits and all kind of vegetables. You can order dinner and breakfast and they bring it to the house. All the fruits and vegetables are biological and the taste is just great! I will definitely come back to Madeira to stay on this place!!

Unbelievable views while going down by the elevator. This place is really disconnected from the world. We enjoyed a lot sitting near the ocean and listening to it's sounds. Restaurant on the beach was nice. We had very delicious fish and average poncha (comparing to some really good Poncha places). It was so special to have our lunch so near the ocean and in such quite of nature. Must come here if you really need to throw all the hard stuff from the head.

Me and husband went there for our anniversary. We stayed there 3 nights and it was amazing... They are very helpful, we got a free upgrade in the house we booked and we had access to the elevator as many times we wanted to go up and down.
We felt totally disconnected from the stress life and could relax with ocean sound.
The breakfast was ok... The bread was warm but the high peak for us were the fruit´s jam...
Unfortunately the dinner was not the same quality. I felt really sick in the stomach after the dinner and even had to pay some visit to the toilet. I mentioned that to the personnel in the restaurant and not even a I´m sorry was given.
I would definitely plan to visit again if was possible to rent a mango tree to eat during one day or afternoon.

First off,we took the bus from funchal which gave it a more backpackery sense...especially cuz you have to get off at quinta grande and stop is like nowhere...then we asked some locals how to get there and it meant going down about 2-3 kms (easy laid back walking just watch out for cars as there is NO SIDEWALK).
just before the lift theres a beautiful spot for an amazing view and then the lift...haha so cool and a little scary when the guy tells you that after every trip you have to allow for 3-4 mins for the engine and cables to cool down;)
Get down and in the way to the restaurant you can spot some nice fruit trees and such, then the restaurante which has verg good prices (you would think its a rip off but no..a 330 beer and pepsi light 3.1 euros!)
Just sitting and admiring the soundof water and waves...its not high season so its so quiet. The lift costs 7.5 euros for a return ticket.dont expect a lovely beach its mostly rocky.
On the way back we asked the guy on the upper level to order a taxi for us...25 euros from there to the hotel in funchal.
Pure fun and relaxing!!
