Nice place, and the drive there was kinda exiting with all the narrow roads and tunnels on the mountain sides.

Visited Santan this week and had read the reviews before arriving. Most of the previous poor reviews must be from folk who hadn't ventured down to the the cable car which I have to say is very poorly signposted. We arrived by the local bus from funchal which is quite a trip in itself. After You walk through the pleasant town with its scattered thatched houses and find after about 20 minutes walk the top of a massive cliff with an impressive drop of 500+ feet. The beach can only be reached by a breath taking cable car which runs by demand. At the bottom is a world heritage nature reserve. Well worth a visit.

It was nice to visit some of Madeira's history and we had a fantastic meal in the village whilst we were there.

Definitely worth a brief stop off if you have a car.

The houses - built in an A-frame - are interesting and the village of Santana is very picturesque.

A trip to thew north of the island takes you to Santana where you can see replicas {and a couple of originals} of the type of house once lived in in these parts. Well laid out village.
