“Not what we expected”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2011

Returned from a stay at this hotel 2 days ago. Overall the week in the hotel was distinctly average, bored out of my mind and couldn't wait to get back home. I'll start with the negatives first. I don't know how Madeira hotels are given their star rating, but I have stayed in 5 star hotels around the world and this hotel should only rate as a 3 star. No way should it be 5 star. If you intend to stay in this hotel this season, be aware that there is a lot of building work being done at the hotel next door on the westside of this hotel. Wasn't informed about this by the travelzoo! The noise is very loud starting from about 0730 to 1800 daily. Our room was facing the hotel being renovated, but the staff changed us to the other side of the hotel without any fuss. This hotel is quite away from Funchal, which means you will have to either get a taxi or bus. However, was very disappointed by Funchal as there was little to see or do. The hotel mainly catered for the more mature traveller, but towards the end of the week families started to arrive and with very little entertainment for the kids, they resorted to running round the pool streaming and shouting, which added to the loud noise coming from the workmen at the hotel next door, who also found it entertaining to watch women around the pool area. There isn't a beach in the area, so the only entry to the sea is via rocks. The hotel room was very average. The only wifi access was in the communal areas near reception and the bar areas. Now the positives; the staff were very friendly and always eager to help. We stayed half board and all meals were buffet service. There was plenty of choice and the food was well cooked, but the choice became rather repedative towards the end of the week and very little spices used in the food. Breakfast was the best meal of the day. The hotel was kept very clean. The air conditioning worked well, but was a little noisy. I would recommend some of the island tours that are offered, we did the west island tour, which was great to get up into the mountains above the clouds. Wonderful scenery and an entertaining guide. This was the highlight of our stay. I'm in my 40's now, but won't bother going back till I'm in my 70's. Certainly not the sort of place to take kids.

This was our second trip in two years to Madeira, which is becoming our favourite place to holiday. We stayed at the 5 star CS Madeira last year and we thought that would be hard to beat.

On arrival, we were greeted with a big smile from one of the young chaps on reception who spent a good few minutes informing us of all the basics and essentials. We stayed in a third floor sea view room (which is actually on the same level as reception). We were very happy with the room - all very modern with large Samsung LCD TV on the wall of the bedroom and speakers in the bathroom with a window in between which made showers rather interesting.

Excellent view over from the balcony - possibly not as good as the CS Madeira but this is simply due to a promenade running between the Melia and the sea, something that actually made it feel a bit more lively, lots to see and the promenade is a fantastic walk we'd highly recommend.

Breakfast buffet was served from 7:30am till 10:30am which was of good quality - lots to chose from!

We stayed at the hotel for one night (when we were a bit tired) for an evening meal and we weren't too impressed. Another buffet selection but everything tasted a bit watery - not much flavour. That is only a minor gripe as we only ever stay Bed and Breakfast as there are many restaurants around Funchal to explore.
A couple of disappointments with the ones directly opposite as you leave the front of the hotel (opposite to the sea). "Grannies House" was possibly the worst. Although it looked wonderful from the outside with an amazing view but the food was terrible - liken to a Travel Chef meal.
The best, by far, is the tapas which is next to the Spa. The service and food was simply superb - one of the best meals we had on the island.

We'd recommend the open roof bus tour as a way of getting into the centre of Funcal - you get to tour a little bit of the island as well as having 'Hop on, Hop off' travel all day. In Funchal, the cable cars are a must! Great fun!
Although the promenade of Funchal is a treat, the second and third streets parallel as you get further into the island are great for hunting out shops and bars - amazing pavements as well! Must have taken ages!

Back to the hotel, we had room service one night. We had a typical UK need for a burger and although it wasn't on the menu, they provided them for us with no fuss - and they very very good too!
Nothing was too much trouble for any of them staff there and all helped to make our trip yet another wonderful time in Madeira to chill out.

We'll no doubt be back soon and we would recommend the Melia to anyone who wants a good location, great styled hotel and a shower whilst watching TV!

P.S. One gripe! (Sorry, couldn't resist). The evening/night entertainment at the hotel needs bringing into the 21st century. We were out most evenings but would be back at the hotel for around 10pm and the bass coming from Chaz and Dave's bontempi organ by the pool was horrendous. It finished pretty early so not a big moan but a five star hotel should do better. A string quartet perhaps?

Booked this hotel through a 'deal' offered by Travelzoo. It is branded as a 5 star, but I would call it at best a 3 star superior.

We were on a half board basis, and had a breakfast and evening meal buffet each day. The food was average, every evening meal consisted of a bland meat dish or a bland fish dish - it did seem that the chef ran out of ideas towards the end of each week.

Breakfast was slightly better, I can recommend the omelettes! The Madeiran fare offered each morning was certainly good to see.

I noticed an earlier reviewer was able to swap their evening meal for lunch, and I must add that this option was not offered to us during our stay. If you are on a half board basis, I would make enquiries with reception.

The hotel was I believe supposed to have entertainment each night - there didn't appear to be too much variety! We arrived on a wednesday, and so saw a very good Madeiran folk group that night, then we were provided with a Parrott show on the thursday night and then each subsequent night the only 'entertainment' was the resident duo MMM. Ok, maybe for one night, but 5 nights was stretching it!!

I would also warn anyone about the rather bad Health and Safety aspects of the Hotel. All the units in our room (bedside table, desks, chairs etc) had extremely sharp corners. My husband cut his leg very badly on our first night, fortunately reception provided a first aid box - however it was not a great start to our holiday. There is also no bath mat provided, so beware of very sharp edges on the units inside the bathroom.

Our experience of the staff was fine, particuarly those on the Reception desk who were always pleasant and helpful.

The beds were ok, but I found the pillows to be extremely soft - ending up with neck ache for most of the holiday.

Unlikely that I would use this hotel again.

The hotel is lovely and it's far better than most of the 5 star hotels in this area, we have just come back from Maderia and Maderia is beautiful and a very lovely place to visit. The hotel is one of the best and you will not be dissapointed with the hotel, the service is brilliant and it's the little touches like the free turn down bed service with treats and how well they clean your room ...the only thing I would say is the hotel breakfast it not amazing but it is ok and the evening meals could have been better rather than just buffet every night. If your a young couple as we are 25-30 then you may find the much older couples who stay dress very smart while dinning , The in door pool is amazing you must try it, no one seems to use it but it is a must !!!! we both fell ill while we were away but not sure where we picked up the bug from cannot say really. All in all this hotel will not let you down and if your west facing room is not even a sea view one do not worry you will have a great view...the italian restaurant at the bottom of the hill from the hotel is lovely as well ....honest review hope this helps
