We have recently returned from a fantastic honeymoon in Madeira and the Melia was fantastic! It was, in our opinion, a great 5 star hotel. The staff were polite, helpful and made us feel welcome. Nothing was ever too much and that goes for all staff from check in to bar staff to the pool staff.

The hotel is beautiful and as we were out of peak, blissfully quiet! The rooms are big with lovely bathrooms. We were upgraded for free which was a nice perk, along with complimentary wine and chocolates. The room had ample space and were tastefully decorated with a nice big plasma on the wall with some great English channels.

The pool side area is clean and beautiful with fantastic sea views. There were plenty of sun loungers and the hotel provide towels at the pool side. The pool was clean and whilst it was not huge, it was big enough.

The breakfast in the Melia was fantastic, huge choice! The staff make omelettes and your eggs in front of you so it is vey fresh. The only slight criticism is that breakfast runs until 1030am and if yu do go down after 945, you tend to find the bacon, beans etc may have been sitting out for awhile.
We didnt eat dinner in the hotel as it was pricey and to be honest we wanted to explore the local restaurants.

We didn't use the spa but my husband got a fantastic haircut which was cheaper than back home. We also used the indoor pool which was peaceful and clean.

All in all we loved our stay in the Melia. Madeira is a fantastic place and we went on the west tour and to the casino show, both trips were excellent! We were a little nervous about our trip as Madeira is known for it's older clientele, however do not let this put you off. We are a couple aged between 26 -28 and if you are looking for a relaxing holiday with some culture then we would definitely recommend Medeira and the Melia! There weren't many children around which for us was a major plus and there is still nightlife for pubs and clubs.

We are hoping to go back to Madeira in the future and we I'll definitely be staying in the Melia again!

Lovely hotel, modern stylish and the decor everywhere is relaxing and easy on the eye. Our room was comfortable and spacious. Food was great, lots of variety at breakfast and the evening meal, buffet style was fine too.

I had one or two minor issues though.

1.Very often meat and fish cooked on the hot plate or barbecue wasn't cooked to order, it was just left on warming plates. It was OK but would have been so much better served piping hot and freshly cooked.

2. Much of the entertainment wasn't to my taste and was far too loud. At the end of a nice meal the last thing I want to hear is someone bashing on about how she's able to boogie all night long. The sound carried to neighbouring hotels. We were however treated to a group of local dancers and musicians on the first night, they were excellent.

3.It seemed odd that the Melia Mare, unlike most of the other hotels in the area doesn't have a security door access, by room key card, into the pool area from the promenade . The only way into the hotel is at the back through reception. In practice, this involves having to walk up a short but very steep hill at the end of an evening's stroll. Fine for the youngsters but I noticed quite a few people of a certain age glad to get to the top.

I don't intend to get into the 4/5 star debate as I don't know what the criteria are and am therefore not qualified to make that assessment either way.

Other than all that, it was ideal and I would go again.

I'd like to add a final word or two about the staff at the hotel. All were excellent and couldn't do enough to help us with the occasional query we had about the hotel, the locality, transport or whatever.Nothing was too much trouble. Reception, waiters, cleaners, all top notch and a pleaure to deal with.

I stayed on this hotel last November, and I can say it deserves the Five Stars. Rooms are large and luxurious and service is very good. Breakfast is fantastic with lots of choice. The location is perfect, in Lido, as close as possible to the sea.

The minus that I have to point out it's regarding the SPA, since it is run by a private company (Malo) and, the fees are very expensive and not included in what you pay for the room.

The hotel as its own indoor pool and jacuzzi, but the place is always empty. I tried it and pool water was cold so as jacuzzi. I complained about it to the staff in reception, but noone seemed to care.

Overall is a very nice place to stay, if you forget it has SPA on the name...

I had an amazing holiday with my husband at the hotel and I wish it had been for more than a week.
We booked through Travelzoo (hotelsbooked, com) and everything went smoothly. We arrived at noon and our room was ready for immediate occupation. It was on the eighth floor and we had paid for a seaside view which meant we could sit on our spacious balcony and look at the sea as well as the people on the street below.
The room was spacious with a large kingsize bed, small sofa, desk, large wardrobe, modern flatscreen TV with lot of channels including the facility to buy films. The bathroom was spacious with a waterfall shower over the bath. You watch and listen to the TV from the shower if you want to! There was a plentiful supply of toiletries, towels and bathroom robe with slippers.
The room was cleaned prompted every morning whilst we were at breakfast - the best service we have ever had.
We went half board, the breakfast had a good selection of food including portuguese custard tarts to die for and as many cups of fresh coffee as you wanted. The evening meals were just as good and if the desserts did not appeal you could ask for ice cream. It was lovely to sit outside eating these meals and the staff were ultra efficient. It was possible to buy a bottle of wine in the evening which if you did not consume in one go you could get the staff to retain for you to have the next night.
The poolside is lovely and the pool attendant will bring a mattress and towel for the sun bed as soon as you appear. We spent several days by the pool it is such a relaxing area and no loud music from the bar. It is definitely a couples holiday so no screaming kids jumping in and out of the pool, a definite bonus. Admittedly the poolside bar drinks are expensive but that is to be expected in a five star hotel and we just took a bottle of water to the poolside with us.
There is a mini fridge in the room and we bought wine and nibbles at the local "Pingo Poce" supermarket.
The gym had plenty of equipment, it opened at 7am and closed at 9pm. This was great for my husband who likes to use the gym before breakfast which was served till 10am. There is also an indoor pool and Jacuzzi which we used once (the weather was so good we mainly used the outdoor pool) . We also checked out the Spa which is15 euros pp for the day - it looked good and we planned to use it on a bad weather day but fortunately that never arrived.
Are only complaint is that there was no wi fi in the room. There is free wi fi in the public areas. They will provide a cable for laptop computer in your room but this is no good with an Ipad.
The hotel is in a lovely location by the Lido and on an easy bus route to town. We did the yellow open top bus top for two days 12 euros each to see Funchal - it was okay but having spoken to other guests I think the local bus (about 1euro a trip) would have been better.

There are local bars nearby and the Irish bar (I think it is called Pra Poncha) in front of the hotel does the local drink and another amazing drink called the Nikita which comes in a half pint glass and is weirdly delicious as it consists of wine, beer, pineapple, passionfruit and ice cream!!

All in all I would highly recommend this hotel and Funchal as a relaxing holiday destination.

Room Tip: The side sea view was good as you had an excellent view of the sea which you could see from your bed...

We stayed here through a deal on travelzoo so for us the hotel was amazing for such a good price.

We had a side sea view room but I think all rooms are side sea or sea view. We had two bigger than single beds pushed together which was fine with us. The room was lovely and big with a nice balcony with table and chairs. The bathroom was very good with his and hers sinks, big bath, rainfall shower and power shower. The air con in the room was very good and very quiet.

The pool was lovely, with plenty of sunbeds (we came in September so don't know about peak season). There was a bar by the pool with happy hour having 40% off cocktails! There was also an indoor pool with jacuzzis, a pool table, a spa (very expensive though) and restaurant.

We stayed half board. The breakfast was nice, loads of choice - bread, yogurt, fruit, cheeses, hams, cooked breakfast, omelettes made to order, pancakes, cakes, juices, sparkling wine. We couldn't complain about anything as there was anything you wanted. When we were there only one restaurant was open unlike the many that was advertised. The first night we were a little disappointed with the food. The posters around the hotel said it was pasta night - pasta with lots of different sauces. This turned out to be ravioli with tomato sauce and parmesan. There was quite a lot of options though. We were also disappointed to find out that no drinks came with the meal (we're students and 4 euros for a bottle of water seemed a bit steep!) We took our own water down each night as they wouldn't give us tap water but no one seemed to mind. After this night though the food got a lot better. The Maderian night was the best with an outdoor BBQ of traditional Madeiran food. We would warn any vegetarians that this hotel does not cater for you unless you want salad every night. So while the food overall was nice I would say for a 5* hotel they could do better. But don't let the awful reviews of the food put you off, it is nice!

The best thing about the hotel was the staff, especially on reception. We asked questions everyday about the buses, walks etc. They booked our walks/boat trip for us, printed out bus times and constantly phoned the wine lodge when we left our camera there. On the first day we thought the air con wasn't working properly in our room so asked if someone could look at it, we expected someone to come hours later but the man came within 5 minutes. It felt like nothing was too much trouble and when we walked past we got a nice smile and hello. They really made our holiday relaxing. We also got transfers from and to the airport which was no trouble as well. We got a note through to our room telling us what time someone would pick us up without us even having to mention it.

Overall we loved this hotel as we got it at such a cheap price. However, if we were paying full price we may be a bit disappointed with the food. I would recommend just having breakfast.

The hotels in Funchal are mostly just out of town in the 'hotel district' (funnily enough) but very few are on the seafront itself. This one is about as close as you'll get with the pool area off the boardwalk/boulevard footpath that runs along the coast here. That path runs for several miles and is a lovely walk. You have sea views and the pool area is well laid out, with good facilities, helpful staff and (just for a change nowadays) not too overcrowded. The location is good for the local restaurants and you can walk to the town centre, but a taxi is quick and easy to get and that is true for the vast majority of hotels in Funchal. the pictures of the pool area do not give a good impression for some reason, but it is much larger and ebtter than it looks, including a seperate sun louger area away form the pool if you prefer more quiet and including a great tented pagoda with cushioned seating where you can sit in the shade in comfort to read or relax.
I found the main restaurant food excellent. There was a fantastic selection of prepared fruit every morning and a full selection of anything else you may want for breakfast. One other reveiwer complained about lack of english bacon and suasages. They have good bacon and sausages (as well as beans, tomatoes, hash browns, all kinds of eggs - they have an 'omelette chef'), howewer, if one expects english ones I would suggest staying in England!! They have a huge fresh bakery selection also. The evening restaurant food was also excellent, good quality and well cooked and presented. The evening enterrtainment was varied and some of it very good for hotel bar stuff, for the evenings when you can't be bothered going out!
The hotel has a good gym free to guest use (my only gripe there was no water fountain in it - but they promised to look into that) and also a lovely indoor pool and spa. the pool use is also free, although obviously spa traetment, haircuts etc have to be paid for.
I found the staff very freindly and helpful about everything, including the management, who clearly wish to hear your opinions and improve the experience of staying there for their guests. They will arrange anything (car hire, taxi etc) for you without any drama or problems. I hired a car for a couple of days it waa delivered to the hotel for me and picked up afterwards from the hotel car park and the paperwork took two minutes.
The room was well equipped (safe. varied lighting options, desk, comfortable seating, suitcase rests (2, not the usual inadequate one) slippers, dressing gowns, balcony table and chairs, goos large wardrobes and drawers), spacious, clean and comfortable and the balconies are big enough to sit on without being cramped. I found the beds big and comfortable. The TV channels had good choice in several major languages (English, French, German). The bathroom had screened toilet/bidet section - useful if you need to use it whilst someone else is in the shower. there is Wifi in the many lobbies and internet computers in the library (there are also comfortable public TV rooms, pool (with cues!) room
When I booked to go to Madeira I was told only the 'newly wed and nearly dead' go there. Well whether that is true or not everyone who doesn't go is missing out. Fantastic walking along the llevadas deep in the mountains, great little villages and Funchal has great restaurants, nightlife and culture. This hotel was the perfect base, relaxing, and with everything you could need.
