We had always said there's too much world to see to do second visits anywhere but we will be making an exception with Madeira & the Melia Mare !
This hotel ticks all the boxes.......great location, lovely 5-star decor throughout, clean, spacious bedroom & bathroom, friendly & professional staff. Special mention of Hugo at the pool, who spoilt us daily !! Also breakfast was amazing...with fruit, cereals, yogurts, smoothies, breads, cakes, cheeses, meat as well as a vast range of hot options from omelettes, full fries, vegetables, potatoes etc etc And even though our room (on the 8th floor) was at the side, we had a spectacular view of the ocean from our balcony. So, here's to our next visit.

Room Tip: A standard room on the left side of the hotel was actually excellent.

We're delighted to read your positive and kind comments on Tripadvisor and thank you for taking the time to share same.

We will be sure to pass on your special mention to our pool attendant Hugo who will no doubt be very appreciative !. Just about all our rooms have a sea view - even those side ones have lovely sea views from the balconies.

Madeira is a unique destination - combined with a great climate and natural beauty, the island is a haven for relaxation and one where you feel very safe too!

We're happy to hear you intend to return and look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future!

With kind regards and best wishs

Melia Medeira Mare is a lovely hotel BUT not 5 star at the moment:
the dining room requires brightening
most pool umbrellas and sunbed mats need replacing as they look in poor condition.

On the plus side the rooms are fabulous, the staff are stupendous, the food (breakfast) is great and the spa is wonderful.

The rooms are cleaned daily and towels changed whenever you wish. The room includes hairdryer, separate shower and bath, twin sinks, twin or double beds, large wardrobes, sofa, desk, large balcony on standard room with table and chairs, tv with video or channels, tea/coffee making facilities with kettle. They use recycling bins in the room-hooray for the environment.

The spa has sauna, steam room, assorted showers, salt pool, Jacuzzis and plain pools. They provide hair and nail care, massage and assorted treatments for reasonable prices.
There is an indoor pool which is warm with another Jacuzzi. There is fully equipped gym also.

The nearby restaurants are very good and all within short walking distance.
Opposite the hotel is Bella Ilha for those who love good value food and drink.
The White Candle just a short distance away is good value too with excellent waiter service.
Just in front of the hotel near the sea is Scat restaurant. Beautiful food!
Further along is Mamma Mia - you should book as this is a proper service restaurant and costs a little more. Along here are 2 other restaurant worth a look, Casa Madeirase- delicious food and pasta/grill place opposite. All places had very good service. I have no complaints!

I managed on 20 euros for most of the restaurants and managed to leave a tip as well.
I ate alone most days but ended up chatting to everyone nearby as so many people are very friendly and I always felt safe.
I shall go back to Melia next year if they promise to update the bits I mentioned before otherwise I will go to Pestana Promenade along the road as this was beautiful but 4 star!

Overall I returned home yesterday 10/10/13 after 10 days of restful enjoyment.

Room Tip: I was on the noisier west side but it wasn't too bad apart from Tuesday recycle day later in the morning when I was in the pool area where you could hear it anyway. Other side might be better. All rooms are double but suites are probably nice for romantic couples. My double room would have been great for anybody. The partial sea view was very adequate but a pool view at the front would be preferred by some. There is a choice at booking!

Stayed here for a week in Sep/Oct 2013

Clean nice hotel, fairly good facilities but nothing to get excited about for 5 Star.

Staff generally not great in varying capacities.

Don't think I'd stay there again should I return to Madeira.

This break was arranged at short notice and we wanted a quiet, relaxing break. We were looking for somewhere to just relax and the Melia ticked all of the boxes. It is far enough out of town to get some exercise, if you like walking, but also has a good bus service. The hotel had excellent facilities and the staff were very friendly. We will be coming back and would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends.
