Stayed her for a week and the hotel was exactly what we needed! Pool area is great overlooking the sea! Nice seating areas located around the hotel to relax and enjoy the sunlight. Bar men and restaurant manager were absolutely perfect! They knew how to crack a smile and to have a laugh. One of the nights was a BBQ and being a vegetarian most was off limits. So manager asked me what I would like and they specially cooked some amazing food! Really cared for us!

Location wise it's been good. Restaurants and pubs are walking distance. Supermarkets are practically everywhere.

Canyoning I would advise to do! Was such an amazing experience, and not as difficult as it looks. We emailed epicmaderia and they picked us up and we were back within 5 hours. They also arranged scuba diving for us which was extremely helpful!

Overall. Amazing place to go! Would definitely come back!

We have just returned from a week in Funchal staying at the Melia Madeira Mare for the first time. We have stayed at quite a few hotels in the Lido area, 4 and 5 star but have to say, this was probably the best.
The hotel is in an ideal location with views across the Atlantic. There are great restaurants, bars and water sports all close by and it's close for getting into Funchal. The hotel is large and modern, contemporary in decor and spotlessly clean. The staff are great, friendly, helpful and the housekeeping staff are fantastic. Our rooms were fab, comfortable, clean, modern and with gorgeous large bathroom. Everything you could want is provided (including lovely thick towels, not hard and scratchy like ones we had in last 5 star!) and the bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. The terraces and pool areas were also spotless and really great for relaxing in, particularly the outside bar area.

Hotel has free wifi which can be used everywhere, super flat screen TVs in rooms (not that you would want to spend time watching!) and reception staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Hotel also ensured we had double bed as requested and room next to our daughter's room.

Only couple of negative points, breakfast although offering very good selection of fresh foods was bit chaotic and not great experience. Hotel would do better if guests were shown to a table and if they brought tea or coffee to the table and left the pots. The system here is for waiters to pour you a drink which would be ok if they were not so busy that often you were missed completely. Usually took so long to get a coffee you gave up on asking for a refill! Other disappointment was that nothing was working in indoor pool area all week, including whirlpool bath. These were just minor disappointments but did not spoil the overall experience which was fantastic and we would definitely stay here again next year

Room Tip: Our rooms were only "standard" on same floor as reception but were excellent. Close to lif...

This is my first hotel review so probably a bit OTT, but thought I'd share my opinion on the hotel and area. Stayed last 2 weeks of June 2014. Fantastic weather throughout. Looks good, a little soulless but if you want peace and quiet then you will have that in spades.

Room on the top floor was very clean, large and modern with a Japanese-style décor.
Large wardrobes with built-in drawers but no proper bedside cabinet/drawers which would have been nice. Large and very comfortable/hard bed. Wonderful pillows provided!
Bathroom - very chic/powerful shower. Air-con - the most powerful ever experienced - beware!

The hotel was relatively empty as it was just outside the peak season so a number of bars/communal areas were closed off which was fine. Didn't use the spa facilities despite there being a hotel deal of 'Buy 10 drinks and get 1 free use of the Spa'. Word of warning the drinks deal could not be used with the other hotel deal at the time which was 'Buy 4 meals and get 1 free'.

Breakfast was adequate…as usual the egg station a little overwhelmed at times.
Didn’t use the a la carte restaurant as too much choice outside the hotel
One main pool area – quite small especially for the number of guests. Definitely won't be enough sun loungers during peak holiday periods! Tip - there are two very nice cabanas on the upper level. Nice if you fancy a spot of shade!

High praise should go to the staff during our stay: Pestana & Tomas (bars), MIguel (restaurant) but a special mention deservedly goes to the all-rounder/enthusiastic Fatima who could not be faulted in anyway and Hugo Pires (pool guy) who worked tirelessly no matter how hot the weather! The reception and maintenance staff also delivered exceptional service. Very rarely have I had to use them, but twice when I called about something faulty within the room (broken door hook/intermittent faulty bathroom lights) everything was fixed within 10minutes! Remarkable.

Location-wise a good 30min walk to the town centre of Funchal. The local area has and is undergoing development which should make the area even more cleaner/pedestrianized. Convenient shops and a good variety of restaurants to cater for all tastes and budget.

My tips and recommendations:
Spar directly opposite the hotel. Pingo Doce - a big and even cheaper supermarket where you can stock up on virtually everything. For sushi lovers definitely try the Japanese buffet place Nagoya (upper level on the restaurant parade a short walk away) – 16 euros all you can eat except drinks. Went several times. Papa Manuel’s Pizzeria and Restaurant at the bottom of the hotel. Brilliant value and amazing portions. O Dragoeira Cocktail bar/restaurant and the White Candle directly opposite the hotel. Also afternoon tea at the Reids Palace hotel –a little pricey at 30euros but definitely worth it - go for a last sitting as we had unlimited sandwiches, tea, sweets and scones!

We only used the hotel dinner buffet twice and even with the deal on offer it still worked out around 28 euros pp and frankly one of the poorest buffets in our experience insofar as food varieties. For that price there are lots of other restaurants outside the hotel where you could have a 3 course meal a la carte. Many restaurants also entice with deals for 2/3 courses from around 15 euros upwards. There's plenty of opportunity to try out a few different places and tbh the portions at some places were enormous! Bon appetit!

Stayed here for a week at Easter. Beautiful new hotel. Room was very large & spacious with all furnishings & bedding being of a high standard & very modern in design. As it's so new nothing has really had the chance to get grubby or damaged & this is also the case in the general hotel areas.

Booked a sea view room & had a lovely quite large balcony with a full & clear sea view which we really enjoyed. Room was kept beautifully clean throughout our stay. An Easter egg was left on my daughter's bed for her on Good Friday, which was a really nice touch.

Lovely pool area with plenty of sunbeds - never had a problem getting one & the guy who looks after the pool towels was always very helpful (although you can't swap towels yourself, so if there's nobody around or you've missed the time slot it's tough!) Like a lot of hotels you have to pay a deposit (E10 per towel) for a towel voucher which you then hand back when you're leaving along with your deposit receipt & they return your deposit.

Breakfast was pretty good with some variations each morning, some days better than others but always a reasonable choice. Omelette station was on every morning. Some items could have been better quality for a 5* hotel, but it's breakfast & we never went hungry!

Hotel is right on the coast - frontline, but is a fair way out of central Funchal. We walked in several times but then got a taxi back - there are plenty of them around & they're not too badly priced. There is a bus stop not far from the hotel which we also used & it's fine - modern clean buses.

We didn't eat at the hotel in the evening as there is so much to chose from in Funchal with lots of places offering the tuna on the hot stone (delicious) & freshly caught fish etc etc.

Hotel did have quite a good offer on - 10 drinks for 22 Euros covering wine, beer & coffee - issued with a voucher & drinks were marked off as you had them. Worked out well for us over the week - the House Rose was really good.

Really enjoyed visiting both lots of gardens using the chairlift. Also went on the catamaran trip & saw dolphins & whales then cruised back along the coast past all the hotels - a fab afternoon out. Did the island tour (North & West) which was a bit of a waste of a day being bounced around in a mini bus with not a massive amount that you really need to see! A must is the market in central Funchal with all the flower & fruit stalls, fresh fish section etc. It has a great atmosphere & is a good place to sample some madeira wine & cake.

Overall we had a fantastic week in a beautiful hotel with a gorgeous room. We hope to return & will be staying in the same place.

Wonderful hotel, staff so very friendly and helpful, rooms huge and spotlessly clean, comfy beds. Fantastic location too. Breakfast was great and the two evening meals we had were excellent too.
We were unfortunate to lose our wallet with all our cards and money in (not through crime) Marco at reception lent us money and organised everything for us to enjoy the rest of our stay. A truly fabulous holiday, one we didn't want to end, already looking to return in October, can't wait, so excited!
I've stayed in many 5* hotels and this has to be the best by far. I think anyone would struggle to find something wrong with this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 537 with a fantastic view over the ocean.

Had a lovely stay here, had a problem the first night with a man snoring so loud in the next room that we could hear it through the wall. We were given a new room straight away which quite wasn't as nice but was fine and had 3 external walls.
Beautiful bedrooms overall, we paid extra for a sea room balcony view and it was well worth it. Decent breakfast in the morning, good pool side service.
On the last day I had food poisoning (from the restaurant across the road) and couldn't stop throwing up. They couldn't give me a late check out so after 2 hours of lying on the seats in the lounge I went and begged for somewhere to lie down. They gave me a room for 3 hours to lie in till our pick up. This was a life saver!!!

Room Tip: Get a balcony if you can afford it but preferably not with adjoining balconies.

Dear Valued Guest

We appreciate your sharing your review on Tripadvisor and do hope you've recovered completely.

The sea view rooms are well worth the extra fee and glad you enjoyed your stay overall.

We're also glad we were able to offer you an alternative resting room given your unfortunate experience in an offsite eatery.

Hope this has not deterred you from returning to our lovely island in the not too distant future.
With kind regards and best wishes

Myself and my husband spent a week here in July this year and we had a great time. Hotel was in a spectacular setting, staff were excellent, buffet breakfast was excellent a special mention for Katarina on reception a very lovely girl who is extremely good at her job. We had a good room - 415 - large and spacious with a large bathroom. All in all we had a lovely stay and have highly recommended this hotel to our friends since our return. We hope to return in the very near future.
