“Looking forward to my next visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2009

Just returned from a excellent stay at the Melia Madeira Mare from 9/12/09 to 12/12/09. After a smooth flight with Easyjet from Bristol we arrived at the hotel by taxi (€32). As an alterative, there is a airport aerobus which stops very close to the hotel for €5 per person, (outward journey is free for TAP Air Portugal passengers).

After a smooth check in we were allocated a room on the sixth floor (reception is level three) overlooking a outdoor terrace with the sea in the background. The room was a good size with all of the usual facilities you would expect in a five star hotel, including air conditioning, minibar, tea / coffee, safe, flat screen television and a small sitting area with desk and chair. The décor was extremely modern with excellent bedroom lighting, everything looked brand new and immaculate. Bathroom was a good size and like the bedroom was very modern and in excellent condition. There is also complimentary ice machines in the corridors leading to the rooms. Cleansiness in the room and hotel in general was excellent.

The reception is very spacious with lots of marble and a large Christmas tree with classy decorations. All of the staff were extremely friendly and polite without being over the top and too formal. When I asked reception a question about local Christmas events the knowledgeable receptionist quickly answered the question and gave me a print out of the exact details from the internet which was useful. There is also complimentary internet access in the library and the receptionist provided a password on arrival.

The hotel has a large heated outdoor pool with lots of sunbeds, terraces and seating areas. There is also a indoor pool with a sauna and Jacuzzi. The hotel seemed to be very quiet, possibly due to the time of year. The breakfast was fantastic, excellent selection in a very quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Also tried the evening buffet, €20 per person, had a excellent meal, could not fault any aspect. The chef personally came to the table during the meal to check we were happy with the food, a nice touch. Also ate in local restaurants, plenty of choice within walking distance from the hotel. Had a very good meal at the restaurant directly opposite the hotel. Also had a mediocre meal in a restaurant called Chanceler on the top road, under five minutes walk from the hotel, not recommended.

It takes approximately 30 minutes to walk into Funchal but there are plenty of local buses on the top road and the Carris hop on hop off bus also stops outside the hotel. Excellent value for money (€12 per person) which also includes a trip to Camara de Lobos. The weather was generally very good and mild for December with temperatures around 23C. If you have any questions, contact me and I will try to assist.

Good points-- lovely big rooms, great spa, good breakfast, nice pool
Bad points -- Approx 40 min walk into town (receptionist said 20 min!), staff seem somewhat amateur for a 5 star hotel and don't give you much local information. Tea/coffee in rooms is not replenished adequately, I asked the cleaning staff for milk but just got a 'no milk, sorry' on two occassions.
I would suggest staying closer to town eg Cliff Bay or Savoy.

We booked in the internet of a relaxing weekend break! and payed 123 euros per night with breakfirst included for a twin-room with front sea view.
in the reception the staff are firndly and very helpfull. and the lobby area is very modern and nice, with pleny sofas and relaxing spots.
the room was very big, modern and sofisticated, with plasma Tv, fancy beds and sofas, a big balcony with sea view. the bathroom, was very nite too, with bath facilities separeted from the sanitaries. very good.
The spa area is one of the best i ever stayed, although you have yo pay just to enter it (15 euros),its marvelous!!!!!! as well as the indoor pool and jacuzi!
at dinner we went to the restaurant: what a disapoitment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it was italian night! and froom Italy maybe a couple of pastas and the rest it was the normal and booring international food with few choices... the salad dressing brand were from the local super-marked (the cheapest you can buy......) - not for the standart of the rest of the hotel.......

Booked this hotel for a 4 night break in Madeira, after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor.

You will not be disappointed if you book this hotel. Great service from all the staff, buffet breakfast was excellent. The weather was fantastic and this 4 night break from the cold weather in the UK exceeded our expections.

We are a professional mature married couple (late 50s) who have regular holidays and are well travelled. Hotel Melia was opened last Nov 2008, and is one of a few modern contempory hotels that are now attracting younger clients. I understood from the locals, and taxi drivers that the Melia has developed a great reputation for service, comfort, quality of bedrooms and public areas, amenities etc, as well as being possibly the best value for money (for this standard of hotel) in the area.
Our standard room was kept exceptionall clean, and was fitted with all modern features, furniture, wall mounted flat tv, furniture, cushions, and robes. The bathroom was contempory style with twin basins, bath/two shower heads, and a seperate toilet & bidet.
The piano bar is a very nice place to have a pre dinner or after dinner drinks, and have a happy hour` between 6-8pm which helps a lot with the prices. Pedro & Bar Manager Valerno are top friendly guys.
In fact we found all the staff most friendly and helpfull.
Hotel position is excellent, with most room haveing good sea veiws, so you can see the cuise liners arriving and departing from the port. Also the hotel is situated in the modern part of town, and just a conveient distance from the bustle fo Funchal, being 1/2 hour maximum stroll.
Plenty of shops, supermarkets, bars & retaurants also in the immediate vicinity of the hotel.
The Melia hotel is just as good, if not better the the internet / broschure photo`s.....a wonderfull hotel that we will be visiting again soon.
Mike & Lynne.

Just returned from a week at this hotel and found it to be great value. The hotel is large, very new and is quite simply decorated- however it is still appealing. The breakfast was excellent and the staff were all friendly. The spa was a fabulous facility but a little understaffed so appointments were hard to come by. Our inital room was pleasant but a little small but we were able to upgrade for a reasonable sum. My only concern is that the hotel was quite empty which would not bode well for its future
