After staying in a more old fashioned property we moved to The Vine for a few nights. It was just what we were looking for, the perfect modern boutique hotel that feels very different from most of Funchal's more old fashioned places that cater to more elderly clientele. The design elements were very striking but also the room was quite comfortable as well. The only complaint is that the light controls are a bit confusing and high tech but they can be figured out within a few minutes.

Breakfast was fantastic and nice that it is served til 1030. The fried polenta is a good hangover cure if you drank too much madeira the night before.

Staff all very very friendly to deal with.

The highlight was time spent on the roof deck looking out across Funchal and the sea. The pool up there is smallish but fine for dipping in to cool off. Great lounge beds and chairs, perfect jazzy soundtrack, nice bar up there too (and a good happy hour). Blissful.

The central location is great for sightseeing but without being based right in a tourist trap area.

The hotel is on top of a shopping centre but don't let that put you off, you forget that instantly when you are in the hotel. And the supermarket in the basement is great. If we return to Funchal we'd definitely stay in the Vine again.

Room Tip: beware some of the rooms have bathtubs kind of in middle of bedroom, if that's not your style th...

Objectively it is enough to say that one wants to keep this place as a secret, to keep it for oneself like a diamond, for always having a room available when one wants to go back there.
That is to benefit from the swimming pool and the jacuzzi on the roof, the superb arranged terrace, the UVA restaurant (rather the evening to be mesmerized by the illuminated Funchal), the spa (thank you so much Manuela)… Come, have a look, try everything and enjoy.
Anyway you will spend great time with their definition of "a divine hotel".

Room Tip: Don't hesitate to book the Panoramic suite, have a diner at the UVA restaurant on the rooftop, b...

Everything was very good to excellent in this hotel , very large rooms with high tech (perhaps not to everybody's liking but very clever & effective ) , exemplary cleanliness , first class service everywhere ,very good fusion restaurant - but above all - the location at the center of Funchal with fantastic views from the rooftop terrace & Infinity Pool.
I accept some reviews complain about rooms being "dark" but if you open all shutters & curtains - they are quite bright. The quality of bedlinen & towels from Egyptian cotton absolutely BEST !
If I would have to point out what we did not like - it was the packing of toiletries at the bath/shower. The quality of toiletries was very good but small plastic containers were of a wrong design - the openings far too small for a shampoo or a shower gel to flow out while trying to squeeze them out was fingers breaking exercise really.....
Coming back to good things - taking the opportunity of the Flower Festival at Funchal - the staff prepared a Flower Party by the pool - which was a VERY ELEGANT dinner by the twilight with candles on the tables , further enhanced by the end by the colorful & very refined choreographically dance by the children ballet.
This was absolutely our best stay in the 5 star hotel & we have been staying for 10 days - so it was really excellent as we have been leaving The Vine hotel at Funchal yesterday VERY RELUCTANTLY. Gregory & Yolanta Zolynski - staying at the room 418

Room Tip: Ask for room on upper floors as due to cobbled streets around - car tyres noise can be heard on lowe...

A really great hotel with excellent friendly service. A complementary room upgrade was appreciated. The happy (2) hours at the roof-top bar each evening was great with fantastic views. (A few more seats at the bar though please.) Room lighting is a bit idiosyncratic as others have mentioned, but not really a problem. Rather disappointed that complimentary water was not provided in the room after the first night, although chocolates and other treats were every night. Expect that at a 5* hotel. The restaurant was excellent, as were those elsewhere recommended by the reception staff. Breakfast was extensive and good quality, but rather busy at later times. Overall definitely intend to return.

Room Tip: Higher floor

As im now in a 5 star hotel (lisbon) writing this review,i have come to admire and love "the vine". Granted, not all was to our liking but overall i loved it.
Dislikes:
* room is too dark without opening the curtain (electronicaly)
* the room isnt THAT big but was enough for us.
* the whole touch pads for controlling lights wasnt good enough/intuitive enough (im very techy).
* toilet and bathroom doors dont always close correctly and are transparent though because the room is not lit enough you dont see too well but that bothered us less.
* not enough english speaking channels.
* in the shower there are 2 knobs - one that controls temp (which was the other way around...the side that was supposed to make the water hotter was colder and vise versa),the other one controls the source of water (one upper huge shower head and the other is a shower head with a hose that you can hold and move) - that knob is circular without a handle so if you stop the water when rubbing soap and then your hand is smooth enough that you cannot open the water again!! I tried and tried, then had to go out and take the little towel. Happened to my wife too and then we just left the water running during the shower.
* when climbing off the bed the annoying light turns on (wife pregnant goes to the toilet a lot ...)
* there is a transparent wall (glass) between shower/bathroom and both to the room so if you turn the light in the toilet one could wake up from the light.

LIKES:
* location - just perfect! In the center close to everything, a mall just beneath the hotel with fast foods, supermarket.
* hotel staff - just perfect.very nice, proffessional, help a lot and do everything to help you and have the correct information (in contrast to the "information" stand in the shopping center down stairs which knows nothing and make all these noises when you ask them questions which is their job!)
* breakfast - o god...best breakfast in all of portugal, great taste/selection, everything fresh and the fruits...oh my god the fruits, coffee, bacon all very good!
* bed in the room was HUGE and comfortable.
* shower was huge and water pressure great.
* toiletries were very good.
* every day the cleaning people would leave VERY good chocolates, and even if you just run into them or talk to them, asking something.
* mini bar was complamentary.
* rooftop has an amazing view with the pool and jacuzzi flowing water to the view.
* rooftop bar and the happy hour and just relaxing there on the roof.
* there is a parking lot beneath the hotel if you need it.
* theres a health center (gym).

We really loved it inspite of the dislikes.at first were disappointed but after a little while came to really love it.

Overall excellent holiday, 2 minor points - jacuzzi in Spa looked like it needed freshened up and damp looking marks outside steam room, fried eggs at breakfast looked overlooked and dried up in Bain-Marie which I would have expected better for 5 star. Staff very pleasant, helpful and friendly. We would definately return.
