“A few tweaks needed”
Reviewed 11 July 2014 via mobile

We stayed here for a week having carefully read reviews. Hotel were very helpful arranging a taxi transfer for us upon arrival, and we were checked into a room with a better view than we'd expected. We were helped to our room and shown how to work the lights etc, a source of much discussion on TA! It was fine, could be easier but its all a bit of fun. The blind did a very efficient job of keeping the room dark for sleeping. We did open it during the evening to do make up etc and the room was plenty light enough.
We would have liked tea and coffee making facilities which were not provided. But a kettle was brought to the room once we requested one and we bought coffee etc from the supermarket. But I would have expected all this to be provided in a 5* hotel. Fruit kebabs or plates of homemade sweets were brought to the room daily which was a nice touch though.
The bed was huge and very comfy and the room was well insulated from noise. The mini bar was complimentary for the contents provided which was good. If you wanted refills these needed to be paid for.
The supermarket in the shopping centre below was great for buying water and sandwiches for days out.
Breakfast wasn't always top quality. Scrambled egg always seemed to be empty, burners not always on keeping food hot and coffee often served in the teapots! For a tea hater the bitter taste of tea was obvious but after asking for fresh coffee it was just the same result.
We dined at UVA a couple of times and had drinks at the bar, both very good.
Getting a lounger by the pool wasn't always possible but the bar seating was comfy so we just used to wait there until a bed became free. The jacuzzi outdoors didn't seem to be working when we were there which was a shame.
We used the spa once just for the steam room (very, very hot!) and jacuzzi (not that warm), but it was very quiet and relaxing down there.
Overall the appearance of the hotel is quite spectacular, but maybe more focus is needed on the small things that could make it top quality. But it is in an ideal location close to many good restaurants, cafe's, gardens and tourists attractions.

Booked the Vine on the strength of its 5 star rating and location in the centre of Funchal close to the old town etc.
It located above a busy shopping centre and unless you were directed it might be a little difficult to know where the entrance was, but once inside the staff were very attentive and always helpful.
Ok the design, its a boutique hotel whatever that's supposed to mean in the real world, its very pretty and quite striking dark lighting with pebble floors all very artistic however the rooms themselves have a few odd quirks such as have been mentioned before, the showers can leak into the room area and the electronically controlled lighting and A/C system are at times frustrating with you hitting buttons until eventually something happens!
I did like the low level under bed lighting with an automatic sensor that lights up when you get out in the middle of the night for the bathroom a great idea!
Very quiet despite its location except when you were outside on the bar or breakfast terrace as there is a lot of local area building and demolition going on at the moment but that's hardly the hotels fault and would affect everyone around.
Breakfast was good a large selection and buffet style so as much or as little as you wanted, free Wi-Fi and access to a business suite with printers etc, again free, so all in all despite the minor quirks a very good hotel for what we paid for it.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be fairly quiet but perhaps an atrium room would be quietest if that was an issue...

The hotel is very dark (we stayed on the 5th floor) and the floor is made of pebbles. Looks great, but bad if you want to drag your suitcase. The rooms have no privacy from bathroom, your bathtub is devided from the rest of the room with only a glass wall! At least your toilet and shower have frosted glass from the room, but not between! So, room is definitely not to be shared between friends... This said, the service (from the check-in, help with parking, restaurant, breakfast staff, cleaners to mention a few) was always great and the beds very comfortable. Would recommend the hotel, but only for couples or newlyweds. But, the hotel is in excellent position in the cetre of Funchal. Added bonus, there is an awesome rooftop swimming pool!

Good location, polite staff. Service overall poor, seem to get forgotten about at breakfast for tea & coffee. Frequently run out of plates for fruit and food.
Room had poor noise insulation from street. Shower floor has been made without any fall towards the drain, I mentioned this to reception, got told all the rooms are like this! Felt sorry for the maid mopping each one out every day.
Control of room lights too fiddly and room too dark. Room only had an expresso maker, no facility to make tea. Towels get changed only if you dump them on the floor, once you get used to system its okay.
Service at pool particularly poor most nights.
Pool area quite small due to location, did not go near when hotel got busy, many hoggers of sunbeds.
Did not try the restaurant at night as menu quite restricted, cost would have been justified if quality was to be good, but bad service on other counts did not want me to try. Especially as there are many good resturant's with good service nearby.
Overall a good stay and would only take a little fine tuning to make it perfect.

Room Tip: Higher floor

The Vine” hotel resonates a special calmness with Zen architecture and design, unlike a commodity hotel that can be seen everywhere, or what you would normally find in a resort like Madeira. The unique interest and theme based on four seasons, with rooms committed to the four motivations of the grapes, in a color theme of green during the spring, burgundy during the summer, gray during autumn and brown during the winter. Exelent service with knowledgable staff to plan a blissful day.

Room Tip: Higher floors are large sunny and have favorable views of Funchal. However, the second floor is wher...

Interesting hotel but too dark and designer self-important. Not very customer focused from a design perspective but the staff was friendly and well trained and capable. The room was interesting but the shower water covered the floor in one end of my room after I took a shower and the electronic curtains did not work. There was a desk at the end of the bed but it was crowded by a glass cube whose function I could not determine except that it occupied space that would have been better used by the guest. There were no outlets for plugging in computer or charging electronic devices at the desk. In short, it looked cool but did not function well. The designer was only going for some aesthetic goal and not thinking of guest needs. Finally the bed was slightly broken down on one side and I felt like I was tilted to the left when lying down.

it was a pleasure staying at the vine, as we were our honeymoon the management upgraded us to an amazing room, the staff were amazing and help full. The location was great as it was near the marina and not to far from the old town. in summary a great hotel and great staff.
