“Fabulous hotel”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

We spent a week at the Vine Hotel in Funchal in July. Weather was a little cloudy at times but always warm. The highlight of the week was the hotel. Super position close to the city, harbour and all amenities (no road noise either). The best part is definitely the roof terrace - the view, the pool, the comfy beds and the bar (good value happy hours)! The views of Funchal are great day or night and the temperature never seems to fluctuate. The views are shared the restaurant which although a little pricey is very good quality. Breakfast is varied and of excellent quality with a huge choice of hot and cold - eat it on the terrace and again feel the warmth of the Madeira air. We experienced a 'couple's retreat' in the Spa which again was a little pricey but very relaxing and melted the stress away. Bedrooms are roomy and very contemporary. We loved all the features - the auto blinds, the big bath, the wet room shower and yes the quirky lighting set up! We'd definitely go back. We got out and about a lot seeing much of what the island had to offer in the week we were there - levada walk, mini bus tour, boat trip, market, variety of restaurants, shops. The island is very green and every square metre appears to have something growing on it, a lovely change from some of the more barren Mediterranean or Canaries landscapes.

Room Tip: 5th floor is great looking out onto Funchal and the sea but I imagine all are good!

We found this hotel to be very close to perfect for what we look for in one; Stylish, clean, very good staff, excellent breakfast in a nice atmosphere and at a great location. The swimming pools are fabulous and there is even a real, modern gym, also available to the locals and popular but not too crowded. There should be access to the gym by elevator but we could only go back to our floor from the gym, not vice versa. Entry via the street is not too inconvenient though.
Can't really think of anything bad to say about the Vine. I would most certainly recommend this hotel to anyone, especially couples. Make sure to try the happy hour by the pool! Also the lunch options by the pool are well worth the money.

Room Tip: I suppose all rooms are good but perhaps try to avoid the highs floors directly beneath the pool unl...

The views from the 360 Sky Bar are probably some of the best in Funchal. In the evening, with all the lights of the city and the reflections from the pool, you can just sit and stare with a drink!

The location is excellent. Many of the nicer hotels in Funchal are 20-30 minutes walk from the edge of the old town, whereas the The Vine is right in the middle of it all. Almost everything of note in the old town is within a short walk.

The service we received at the hotel was fantastic. The staff were brilliant and always happy to give us tips and suggestions for places to visit or eat.

Our room (Design Suite) was fantastic; very spacious and well furnished. I've seen reviews from people who didn't like the decor, saying it was too dark. Personally I liked it; I found it quite elegant, and there was plenty of lighting available in the room if you wanted to wanted to illuminate it better. I think it's fairly clear from the images on the website that you're not getting white walls and colourful tiled bathrooms.

By the same token, as people have mentioned, the pool is not huge just somewhere to cool down in and go for a gentle swim. Again though, I think this is clear from the hotels website; I certainly hadn't expected anything bigger.

You also have access to a proper gym, and a spa with all kinds of therapies that bemused me (the rain massage looked interesting but we stuck to massages).

We had a really lovely week here, and if we head back to Madeira in the future, then we'd definitely stay at The Vine again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing that back don't have the sea views but are quieter.

There are a few things about this hotel we didn’t like. For example: the rooms are very stylish, and try to be very modern, with fancy light controls, however, the lights on the control light up the room. There are no power outlets near the bed. The tiles with small rocks in the lobby and elevator are fancy, but not very practical when rolling suitcases. I could keep going, but the point is that design/fanciness should not make the experience less user friendly.

That said, the hotel is the best we visited on Madeira/Porto Santo. The rooftop bar/pool area is nice, and Bruno the bartender was very good. The restaurant was very good. The staff was very helpful and effecient.

This is a lovely boutique modern hotel. Rooms were very nice and of a decent size with a lovely bath and shower. Very modern and spa like in design and roof top pool was lovely, admittedly a bit on small side.

The dining options were fantastic and having ate breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lovely restaurants, I can recommend them highly.

Made for a relaxing and enjoyable long weekend.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Was our reaction when we were shown our room at the Vine. I'm also not sure I want to share this review because then everyone will know what a fabulous hotel this is!!!! We arrived at about 12.15 after an early morning flight, it never occurred to us that our room wouldnt be ready but we were happy to take in the beautiful lounge area. Then we were offered a complimentary drink on the roof terrace whilst waiting for our room to be ready. Once we were shown to our room, our bags were already there and we were given a tour of our upgraded room to a suite - a lovely surprise! The room was well equipped, from shoe shine to an umbrella! The toiletries are really nice and plentifulThe roof terrace is also another wow with 360 degree views of Funchal. The pool is warm and good enough to swim in not just a plunge pool. There is also a jacuzzi pool to one side, a bar serving excellent food and drink and the UVA restaurant. Although based above a shopping mall, to enter any of the bedroom floors by lift you have to use your room card so it was quite secure. The ATMs's were useful as you walked out of the hotel. Breakfast is plentiful with a huge choice from bacon, eggs, mushrooms, sausages, pastries, fresh fruit, cheeses, smoked salmon, waffles, breads and cereals. There is an inside and outside area to eat. Although busy the service is excellent. My husband celebrated his birthday while there and sparkling wine and a cake was delivered to the room. I had asked for the wine but was told both the wine and cake were complimentary. It was a nice surprise after we had walked back downhill from Monte! The pool area was very busy when we were there but towels were brought quickly and we settled in the cane chairs which are very comfy! Our stay was excellent from start to finish with truly a 5 star service. Staff were friendly, professional and worked incredibly hard! We would not hesitate to go again and hope to be able to do so!

Room Tip: You can open the windows! We only found out on our last day and it would have been better than const...

We knew that The Vine would be a hotel very different in character to those we usually choose for a week’s break in the sun but the deal we were offered by Voyage Privé was too good to ignore. We had a week’s stay, including flights, for approximately the cost of five night’s accommodation at the hotel’s advertised rate.

In a word, the hotel is superb and the initial impression of some of its features being the triumph of design over function was soon forgotten and we enjoyed the luxury of the room (214) we were allocated, a corner suite on the second floor with a view over the main entrance and of the road to the side.

We had requested a balcony at the time of booking and this was provided, although it was very small, as probably are all the balconies at The Vine. The décor of the room was of the highest quality. Its facilities could not be faulted, nor could the towel changing and cleaning service. The shower deserves a special mention – once the controls were mastered it was excellent, with a choice of delivery systems. We enjoyed the waterfall one most.

Reception staff too were always friendly and efficient at both check in and check out and helpfully pointed me in the direction of the free internet facilities. For anyone wishing to check e-mails, on Portuguese keyboards, the “@” symbol is, if I remember correctly, obtained by pressing Ctrl + Alt + 3.

We did not eat in the hotel, preferring to take late breakfasts and evening meals in Funchal, where the choice is huge and the cost very reasonable, particularly at current £:€ exchange rates.

We visited the roof top bar on many occasions (usually at the “happy hours”). The service was excellent, the drinks of a very high quality and the views over Funchal were stunning.

This is definitely a hotel we would like to stay at again (even if we don’t manage to get quite such a good deal the next time).
