I have been in many 5* hotels in many countries, this was by far the best stay i've had in my whole life. The staff is great, really helpfull. The hotel and room decorations are gorgeous, the food is fantastic and the bay view is amazing. When you arrive at the hotel, the manager comes to greet you, and show the facilities if you are interested. We spent the new year's eve at the hotel, and payed 200 euros for the dinner wich was divine, and i mean the best, the chef came from a 3 michelin star restaurant, after that, the whole night, we didnt spend a dime, all on the hotel's account. And we didnt even tried the spa wich looked great. It's worth everything they can ask you for the stay, and I didnt even think it was too pricey before I knew how good it was. I dont have the slightest negative thing to say. This hotel deserves a 6th star.

We had a great stay at this hotel. The architecture and design of the hotel are amazing. We got a free upgrade to a suite which was spacious and comfortable. As quite common in other design hotels, the rooms are nicely decorated, however some things were not so practical. But one can turn a blind eye if a room otherwise looks so great.

We didn't have time to visit the spa or use the pool which both looked stunning. But we had a great dinner at the Uva restaurant. The waiting staff was very attentive and our waiter was very knowledgeable about Portuguese wine. He made some really good wine choices for us. He even offered that the petite fours were brought to our room (nicely wrapped in a box) as we could not finish them after the dinner. A very nice touch! The food was very tasty, the portions very generous.

The breakfast was also very good. A good selection of fresh fruit, all nicely presented. The staff also very attentive. The same goes for the front office staff. Everyone was very friendly.

The hotel is centrally located, right in the downtown. It's away from all the other big hotels in the hotel zone so also a great place to avoid all the tour groups.

We did not quite know what to expect of Funchal or the hotel are we were very pleased. We wanted relaxation, good access town and good gym facilities. We got that and more. The pound to euro exchange rate made the restaurant meal at Uva expensive but the wine in the hotel was reasonable and in a very trendy, stylish setting. The view from the roof is great and the staff were discrete, polite and very helpful. The breakfast was very nice indeed, continental and cooked options and we felt full for most of the day on the breakfast alone. The location on top of a shopping centre was very convenient and although others have complained about that we liked it. There is a great coffee place under the hotel just outside and it was full of locals every day. It did the best coffee and cheap too. We enjoyed Funchal. It was warm, had some great places to eat and drink and was not tacky. It is full of older tourists but that would not put me off. It does depend on what you want to do. If you like getting out and about as well as chilling out then I would really recommend pushing the boat out and staying here.
