Almost everything in The Vine is about great design and good materials. You can feel the details almost everywhere. hard to understand the room lights though...to many envonment lights and up and down courtains... it took us 10 minutes of laughs just to figure out how every light and courtain commands worked out.

It's not the typical Madeira island hotel! Its location in the city center is not close to the beach or the mountains, but in the other side it allows you for great walks in the old part of Funchal.

Great rooftop. Quiet, relaxing, astonishing view, huge jacuzzi, horizon view swimming pool.

huge room, confortable XXL bed, nice bathtube in the middle of the room. romantic, well designed- perfect.

Nice staff, professional and discrete.

We didnt tried the restaurant, but we were told the best things about it. The spa is like entering in heaven... :-) my wife just came out of there in pure zen mood.

we highly recomend it!

Enjoy!!

We stayed for one week at the end of March, 5 weeks after madeira had the worst flooding and mudslides for many years. The town was recovering well and the hotel had just reopened. It had closed because of damage to its water supply and IT infrastructure, there was no damage to the public areas or the rooms. Its in an excellent location within an easy walk of all parts of the town - including the 'old town' where many of the good restaurants are located. There was occasionally some noise from the street at night but this was not too disturbing. We travelled through the west of Funchal where most of the hotels were located and we were glad to have made the choice we did.
Our room was comfortable but was a bit 'gimmicy' in that there were too many buttons for lights/curtains/ blinds etc. We had no cold water one morning but this was quickly rectified and compensated by a complimentary and unexpected bottle of wine from the hotel. Service is very attentive - to the point of being over fussy particularly at breakfast. However, the hotel having just reopened was still very quiet and the staff were probably just over eager to please.
The rooftop pool/bar are a real asset. The view must be one of the best in Funchal and, being quiet we occasionaly had it all to ourselves. We did not eat in the 5 star restaurant 'UVA'. Firstly, we thought that eating in a restaurant where we were potentially one of few diners would not be very enjoyable. Secondly it is very expensive. A 3 course meal for two with a bottle of wine will cost at least £150 and more likely nearer £200. We spent the same in the older more historic Reids Palace Hotel which was very enjoyable.
The spa, like the rest of the hotel was quiet and booking treatments was easy. Again, its not cheap but fairly typical of high end European hotels.
The hotel is 25 minutes by taxi from the airport (28 euros), 4 minute walk from the sea front, 15 minutes from the cable car terminal and 15 minutes walk from Reids Palace.

We spent 7 nights at The Vine, mainly due to the convincing recommendations on Tripadvisor and reviews in the UK's broadsheets.

As described by the previous reviewers, the hotel located on top of a new shopping mall in the middle of Funchal. If you don't plan to have a beach holiday on Madeira, this is the perfect location to explore Funchal and the rest of the island. As with every other inner city hotel, you will have associated daytime and evening noise around the property, but this is not really a problem singularily associated with The Vine.

The rooms (we had a junior suite) are modern, tidy and impressively designed with numerous touch panels to alter lighting in the various compartments, blinds, curtains and air-conditioning (which is silent and works perfectly. However you can also open the window and enjoy a mini balcony). A large flat screen TV with the usual content management system and plenty of international channels is present.

Staff are exceptionally helpful, discreet and take their role to make your life as comfortable as possible seriously.

The rooftop bar is equally sumptious and comfortable as the Club Lounge Bar on top the Intercontinental in Sidney, which in my book is the highest of praises indeed. Views are magnificent and the pool and jacuzzi located directly next to it.

Car parking is free and is as easy as parking in a designated spot next to the hotel and giving the keys to the concierge.

Spa area and treatments were of equally high standards and just added to the feeling of being thoroughly pampered.

In summary, this is a true five star experience in the heart of an interesting and vibrant city on a beautiful island.

Thoroughly recommended.

I have been in many 5* hotels in many countries, this was by far the best stay i've had in my whole life. The staff is great, really helpfull. The hotel and room decorations are gorgeous, the food is fantastic and the bay view is amazing. When you arrive at the hotel, the manager comes to greet you, and show the facilities if you are interested. We spent the new year's eve at the hotel, and payed 200 euros for the dinner wich was divine, and i mean the best, the chef came from a 3 michelin star restaurant, after that, the whole night, we didnt spend a dime, all on the hotel's account. And we didnt even tried the spa wich looked great. It's worth everything they can ask you for the stay, and I didnt even think it was too pricey before I knew how good it was. I dont have the slightest negative thing to say. This hotel deserves a 6th star.

We had a great stay at this hotel. The architecture and design of the hotel are amazing. We got a free upgrade to a suite which was spacious and comfortable. As quite common in other design hotels, the rooms are nicely decorated, however some things were not so practical. But one can turn a blind eye if a room otherwise looks so great.

We didn't have time to visit the spa or use the pool which both looked stunning. But we had a great dinner at the Uva restaurant. The waiting staff was very attentive and our waiter was very knowledgeable about Portuguese wine. He made some really good wine choices for us. He even offered that the petite fours were brought to our room (nicely wrapped in a box) as we could not finish them after the dinner. A very nice touch! The food was very tasty, the portions very generous.

The breakfast was also very good. A good selection of fresh fruit, all nicely presented. The staff also very attentive. The same goes for the front office staff. Everyone was very friendly.

The hotel is centrally located, right in the downtown. It's away from all the other big hotels in the hotel zone so also a great place to avoid all the tour groups.
