A fantastic Villa in a fantastic place. The pictures do not do this place justice. We spent 2 weeks here as a party of 9 and the villa was more than ample in size and amenities. The pool was a good size and the well stocked games room/ tv room is huge. Bedrooms are excellent as is the living space and kitchen, which had all you could need really. BBQ is a good addition also. The owner Gonçalo was very helpful during our stay and very approachable.
Funchal is a fabulous place to visit although be warned, it is extremely hilly. We would walk down to the main areas of the town each day as it is all downhill, and then return up to the villa by taxi. There are many excellent bars and restaurants all over so you are spoilt for choice.
All in all, we will certainly hope to go back again one day soon.
This is a fabulous villa; set in a residential area, among other similar, privately-owned villas on a secluded no-through road. The photographs show more clearly than I can describe just how beautiful it is. In the basement area there is every games facility any family could need, from toys and games for the young ones, to table tennis, pool table, gym equipment etc for the teenagers/adults, plus TV and games console. The swimming pool is big enough for a proper swim, and is salt water, rather than laden with chemicals. There is a fabulous, huge barbeque, and plenty of seating both inside and out. All the rooms are light, airy and - despite no air conditioning - cool. Set in a southerly-facing position, high above Funchal, the villa has lovely views, and cooling breezes. It is a little out of the way, and some taxi drivers had difficulty finding it, but the best advice is to direct them via the Maritimo stadium, and once there you can tell them where to turn. It costs between 8 and 10 Euros from Funchal. Walking down is not too bad and takes about 20 - 30 minutes, but if you don't hire a car, a taxi is pretty essential, as it is a very long, very steep climb back.
Near the Maritimo Stadium, which is about 10 minutes walk away, there are 2 restaurants and a small cafe, these are the nearest restaurants. There is a supermarket in Sao Martinho (uphill from the villa) or in Funchal, both are too far away to walk. We found it easier to walk to Pingo Doce in Funchal, do the shopping, and get one of the taxis (which park nearby) back, but if you have your own car the Sao Martinho one may be easier.
The villa is very private. we never saw any neighbours, but unfortunately we did hear their pets. the first couple of nights were peaceful, with only the distant noise of dogs and traffic which, because you are high up, and the town is in a sort of 'bowl' beneath, is almost like a natural amphitheatre, amplifying the sound at night, but it wasn't disruptive. However, after a few relatively peaceful nights, one evening the dog next door was put outside at about 8;00 pm, and it barked loudly and unceasingly until well after midnight, which set off the other dogs in the area (of which there are many). This happened again the next 2 nights, and we all had to wear earplugs in order to sleep. I told Goncalo of the problem, and helpful as always, he contacted the neighbour, and the situation did improve considerably, but did not disappear altogether.
Goncalo was an excellent host, always contactable, and helpful. He even drove us to a good restaurant for lunch, when our early flight meant we arrived at the villa before it was ready. He arranged our transfers from the airport to the villa, and it was both more comfortable, and cheaper than taking a taxi. On arrival, Goncalo had provided a bottle of water (although the water there is safe to drink), Bolo do Caco (local bread), ham and cheese. Bathroom and pool towels, tea towels, etc are provided too, so no need to bring these with you. At some rentals, washing powder, dishwashing tablets, soap, charcoal etc are provided, and you just replace what you use, but here an early visit to the supermarket is essential, as I think the cleaners must remove all remnants from the previous guests (or we were unlucky, and the previous guests took everything away with them!)
This is a fabulous place, with every amenity you could wish for. A car would be helpful, but not essential unless you have difficulty walking. There were only 4 of us, but there's plenty of room for larger parties. Apart from the dogs, it was peaceful, and a relaxing holiday.
Absolutely beautiful spacious house with stunning views in a quiet area it has everything you need including a BBQ and a lovely outdoor sitting area where my family and friends sat in the evenings. The bedrooms are spacious and clean with amazing views. The pool is perfect, swimming looking out to sea. Downstairs there is a huge games room with a TV. Opposite the Maritimo stadium which is about 10 minutes walk from the house there is a restaurant "a casa da sogra" and just 2 minutes to the left there is a restaurant/grill. Funchal centre is about 20 to 30 minutes slow walk down where there are an abundance of restaurants.
We’ve just spent a lot week here, and the pictures do not do it justice. The house is in a great position, and it’s so easy to walk down into town. This villa has so much to offer from the fantastic games room in the basement, to the outdoor bbq area and the pool overlooking the sea and Funchal. Gonçalo is so helpful and nothing a bother.
We had a party of 10 people celebrating our 50-th birthdays. Enjoyed every minute in villa and Madeira. House is even better in real life than on pictures. Spacious living room with dining area, enough room for everyone. Kitchen is very well equipped. The outside area was our favorite place and the view from the pool side is stunning. Enjoy the sunrise from balcony.
Location is great: you can order a taxi (8-10eur), go by bus or even walk to Funchal port or old town. At first taxi drivers couldn't find the address easily and for some reason they do not use any gps or apps to navigate. As the football stadium is nearby, you can hint on that. From second day we used the same taxi drivers who already knew the place
Nearby you can find good restaurants but in the old town Rua de Santa Maria, filled with nice restaurants, is a must.
Gonçalo was very friendly and always helpful.
We highly recommend this lovely Madeiran house.
We travelled from Funschal airport and were met at the property by Gonçalo with a warm welcome and lots of information about the property including how to work the coffee machine.
This property is located in a quiet cul-de-sac with fabulous views of the bay. The general feel of the place is not so much of a villa but more like staying in someone's home. There are many artifacts, ornaments and keepsakes on displays and tables throughout the property which provides a classy, up-market ambience. The garden is secluded with some stunning flowers and is kept immaculately.
We had a party of 10 plus a baby and this house was ideal for us. We'd lounge around the pool by day and eat out in the evening at many of the great value-for-money restaurants nearby. We tended to walk down and taxi back because everywhere in Funschal is on a very steep hill. If you rent a car there is a very accommodating garage.
Gonçalo provided a travel cot and babybuggy and the basement has a very large area with lots of preschooler toys specifically, tricycle, Wendy house, playpen etc.
The basement also has a games area containing a pool table that's hardly been used and runs true, better than any bar table I've ever played. Also there's a table tennis table and various exercise machines which my family all used for a work out.
The television is also in the basement and all the Premier League matches were available live including some 3.00 kickoffs on the Portuguese networks. The shelves are filled with board games and we enjoyed the Scrabble with tile holders and letters.
The first floor has a massive 10 metre lounge with comfortable sofa and chairs with sliding windows for easy access to the terrace. Also there is a self-contained separate granny flat on this floor with its own lounge, kitchen, twin bedroom with en-suite. My kids enjoyed some separation in this area when they wanted a break.
The upstairs has a lounge and four double bedrooms. The lounge provides access to the balcony together with the master bedroom where you can enjoy beautiful views of the bay.
Overall we liked this place. A lot. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It was also very good that the owner is very helpful and supportive in clearing up any snagging issues. We'd come back in an instant.
