“You must love hills”
Reviewed 6 May 2013

We stayed in a 2 bed seaview apartment ( we had planned a 1 bed garden view but due to a late discount this was cheaper - sometimes it pays to be disorganised). The staff were fantastic really helpful with planning walks. We also hit it lucky with the fact the cover on the swimming pool was broken which really made the holiday, we had been told the pool was open at 9 until around 7 but because the cover wasn't working we could swim when we wanted which meant we could swim at 8 before we went out for the day and again around 7:30 when we returned. I can't guarantee this will happen for you but a 18m outdoor pool is a good recommendation. Be warned it is on a hill. The buses to town take less than 10 minutes, run late at night & every single one we caught was bang on time. But its still an uphill walk from the bus stop -but this is Madeira. If you've read this far all I can say is we originally booked for 3 nights but extended to 6 we would not have done this if we weren't enjoying our stay.

Hello and thank you very much for you comment.
Usually when something does not work, clients are disappointed. I am very glad to hear that in the case of the pool cover, it was in your favour.

I am also pleased that you extended your stay.
We at the Palheiro Village hope that it was not your last visit! (with or without pool cover).

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

Best regards and till your next visit.

Driving from the airport of Funchal to Palheiro Village during the night, we did not expect much - the surrounding area is not entirely pleasant to get lost in. However, the village exceeded all expectations of cleanliness, comfort, facilities and views. The large villa had a pleasant garden and each room was well kept. The pool and surrounding area was beautiful, with views over Funchal below. A great base from which to explore, and the Casa Palheiro itself is also an attractive sight. Thank you!

Room Tip: Choose a villa further up the hill...

We (grandma, mother, a 5-year old and baby of 6 months) travelled to Madeira for a week in February and the weather was great! One day with some rain, that's it! Perfect!

The villa (35, Gometa) is very nice, clean (in total i was able to find one little piece of spiderweb), spacious, great views of the ocean (all of them) and had a very complete kitchen (even a sterilizer for the baby bottles). If I were to be extremely picky and find a flaw, I would say that I found the cutlery something more for a campsite than such a deluxe villa ;-).

They have even thought of the kids, as there was a basket with kids toys, but there aren't any child facility's at the village.

During the night, all night long, you do hear the highway (and barking dogs) in the area, personally I don't mind some noice because it helps me sleep better, but if you're a light sleeper you could find this really annoing.

Service of the staff (from the reception to the security guard) was very quick and friendly!

Madeira is all hills, so going there you either need a car, a good appetite for walking up and down very steep hills or an island bus ticket. Having one of those you will absolutely admire every view around every corner. Madeira is a stunning island.
If you like cooking, you must absolutely visit the Marcado dos Lavradores in Funchal, best fresh fruit, vegetables and fish you can find, they also sell a lot of souvenirs Apart from a view pushy salesman in the upstairs area a really great experience.

There are some beaches, playgrounds and swimming pools to be found in Madeira, but if your child doesn't appreciate the beautiful scenery there isn't a lot to do for kids, so you'll have to make it work in a different way.

We spent one week at the Palheiro village in Funchal for the 2012-2013 new year's eve and it was a very nic experience. We had the opportunity to watch from our terasse the new year's eve fireworks in the funchal bay and that was very impressive. THe rental that we had was very spacious and well furnitured and the staff was very nice as the yproptly brought us a bed for our baby when we asked for it. There was also a fireplace that we used with some wood provided by the staff (unfortunately not included in the price). The location of the village was very convenient as it was relatively close to Funchal downtown but in the same time far away enough to be a quiet and somehow remote place.
The two only negati ve aspects that we saw were:
1) we expected the cleaning services to be more efficient and "in deep" as we had one baby and therefore we have a need for cleanniness; this was somehow dissapointing for such high level standard
2) we felt it was a little bit overprized, maybe due to high seasons price but anyway...

in summary, a good location, especially with babies (if you rent a car) but fora confortable budget

Bonjour et merci pour votre commentaire.

Yes, the time of year that you selected is our most expensvie season; however, it is also second to none. The New Years celebrations are famous world wide and the Palheiro Village is an excellent location to view and experience the awe inspiring fireworks display.

As we offer self -catering apartments and are not a hotel, we provide maid service twice a week. There is no additional charge at the end of your stay for cleaning.
Yes, firewood is provided. It makes for a very cozy ambience; however, it does cost extra.
Clients that now book directly with us, receive free WI-FI.

Perhaps we will have the pleasure of your visit again.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to review us.

Cordialement,

Vera

We stayed for two weeks in a really good quality two bedroom apartment. All properties overlook the sea & face south, so get the sun all day. The apartments are really well finished & have a large kitchen (for those so inclined!). It is not a large scheme & there are not really any facilities for children other than the communal pool.

A car is essential. The road on site is very steep, so we used the car even to go to the golf club at the top! The club allows guests to walk through the footpaths in the course area, which is a delight. The restaurant in the golf club is perfectly adequate, with a wide ranging menu, but it has final orders for dinner at 7.00pm. The staff are very friendly. The dining room at the hotel is first class.

The formal gardens are very good & well worth spending a relaxing hour or two.

There is an office on site with very helpful staff

The local supermarket is about 1km away and is not very big, but fine for essentials.

Top tip is to order the Welcome Pack. Arriving after dark and then trying to find the supermarket would not be fun.

Highly recommended for couples, but might not suit families.

A word of warning about Timeshare touts in Funchal. They will tell you they are doing a survey on tourists' impressions of Madeira. Look up warnings online so you are pre-warned!

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week stay at Palheiro Village. Set high in the hills the views over Funchal are stunning. Nicely furnished apartments (and villas) with well fitted kitchens and private terrace. Just a short drive from a couple of good supermarkets but you do need a car.

The staff here are delightful, nothing is too much trouble. The village has a central pool area with toilets, showers, changing rooms (all spotless) There is an outside table tennis table and the poolside loungers are top notch. Also available is a refreshment bar with hot and cold drinks and ice creams etc. You simply help yourself and leave the money in an "honesty" box.

Very close to the fabulous Palheiro golf course where the clubhouse restaurant serves quite excellent food and has a beautiful terrace overlooking Funchal and the setting sun in the evenings

Just one word of warning!! When thinking about car rental in Madeira AVOID (like the plague) an outfit called "Bravacar" who operate from premises akin to a breakers yard with cars that are an absolute disgrace. The service from the staff at Bravacar is the worst I have ever encountered in more than 50 years travelling. Do yourself a big favour----make sure your travel agent (or their car rental agent in Madeira) does not palm you off with this hopeless outfit.

Room Tip: Try for an upper apartment where the terrace faces the setting sun. Also those at the front are quit...

This was our second visit to Palheiro Village. It is a truly fabulous place & we will be returning again next year. Our apartment (17 ) although close to the road disturbed us little & had a fantastic view of the harbour & Madeira. The only exception was on a days holiday for the island when before 7am some very inconsiderate islanders turned up across the road & had the doors open of their car witrh music playing at full volume. We contacted the police who were useless & made out they had never heard of Palheiro & that they did not understand English ! We then contacted the security at the village & within minutes the offenders drove off.

All the staff are friendly & very helpful & nothing is too much trouble. The maids who come in regularly to restock you with clean towels & clean are lovely. We were shown some of the other viillas & they are all imaculate & really beautiful. Thanks to all but in particular Vera, Amelia & Fatima.

If you are thinking of booking Palheiro, DON'T think, DO IT !! You will not regret it.
