Description: The Casa Portuguesa was established in the year 2000 by Anabela Nunes who continues to run the restaurant with her family. The restaurant is small and intimate, located in one of the back streets in Funchal's Old Town, traditionally decorated with hand painted blue and white tiles, tables covered in hand made Madeiran table cloths and lit with tiny wall lights giving it warmth, character and an atmosphere of dining in a real Portuguese family home. We have a free pick-up service from hotels or apartments if required.

This is a beautiful little restaurant in the old town, decorated in a traditional style - a great setting for a special meal. It suffers perhaps both for not being on a pedestrianised street and for refusing to compete on price. The food however is excellent and the service attentive without being obtrusive. The menu is short, whilst this does often bring some advantages it would benefit from a couple of additional choices per course.

We ate here on Monday night, it was very quiet and despite the setting somewhat lacking in atmosphere although the live background music was very good. Better perhaps to avoid change over day and go towards the end of the week.

Have enjoyed this restaurant over many years, Unfortunately the owners have now embraced the all inclusive menu, It doesn't work here on any level, the portion sizes are reduced, the wine is rationed (strictly), so much so that we asked for an extra glass and it appeared on the bill, any shellfish dishes were excluded. We came away feeling cheated and will not be going back. I only gave 2 stars as the entertainment was good.

This was always our favourite restaurant whenever we visited Madeira bur as standards slipped on the island generally we stopped going there.
Stopping on a cruise at Funchal we explored our old haunts and to our delight we found Casa Portuguesa. We stuffed a scruffy piece of paper through the door asking for a table for dinner and they rang us back on our ship to confirm our booking,
Joy of joy they are just as charming as ever, their food is still outstanding - so is the wine and service. Wonderful polished cutlery is laid on purest white linen. If only other restaurants would aspire to such standards!
A delightful classic guitarist played to us (Madame, he does not need an amplifier)
At the end of your epic evening they give you a discount for cash and take you home free.

Very pretty restaurant but can be a bit pricey. If you want to hear the guitarist then check which nights he's there. They'll pick you up & take you back to your hotel so long as it's in Funchal.
