This was my fourth stay at QPF and it was just as enjoyable as the previous occasions. The staff are always very friendly and happy to help. The hotel location is ideal for the centre of Funchal, whilst being very quiet. This will be my first choice for my next trip to Madeira.

Room Tip: Having booked the lateral sea view rooms on 3 out of the 4 occasions that I have stayed at QPF, I wo...

We stayed in the part down by the sea, and had a south facing room which was perfect for windy days or when it was a little bit cooler, you had some shelter from the wind.

Our breakfasts were served in the smaller café right on the sea edge, breakfast was excellent and they provided me with Gluten free bread and cereal!
For evening meals we ate at the upper restaurant in the old part of the Quinta, and the food was fine. Service was good and staff were pleasant.
This hotel has character and is very well placed to walk into Funchal, it is a little treasure!
There are 2 reception areas, the hotel is in 2 parts and there is a quaint connection over a bridge between the 2 sections. The old part is at the top of the plot and the newer part is down on the sea front.

Room Tip: If you want sun in your room for most of the day then ask for a sea facing room.

Having lived here recently as part of 2013 Christmas holidays coming as part of Thomson holidays, this hotel surpassed all our expectations being very pleasant with great staff around!

Ideal for couples or folks seeking quite and calm surroundings while on their stay. Nice pool and breakfast options to go with every day.

Staff was very cordial and always willing to go the extra mile with any requests, great location to visit the town centre and walk endlessly both the directions outside the hotel.

Only minus not to give it 5 stars is lack of wifi on your hotel rooms and no gym/spa considering it's a 4 star!

A lovely room with balcony overlooking the beautiful garden and the sea. Quiet except for the sound of the sea and sometimes the wind in the trees. Outside swimming pool was perfect temperature for a dip. Friendly and helpful staff . Good breakfast and meals with opportunity to eat outside in the cosy cafe.

Well, i have to say this was a really lovely, charming hotel. we were here for 5 days in november and everything was perfect pretty much. i upgraded the room to a superior double with garden/sea view in the older part of the hotel and it was the BEST choice i made!!!!huge clean room, balcony in the sun all day, views over the lovely gardens and out to sea, so so happy with my choice.

location is spot on, 10 min stroll to the old town and so much closer than a lot of the the other hotels.the hotel itself is so charming, green lush grounds and a nice pool at the top hotel. we used both and also loved the pool at the bottom right by the sea. a few dips in the cold sea sure was refreshing but they provide big towels etc, its perfect.

overall we LOVED this hotel, its great value for money, the breakfast was full of choice and delicious and i would not hesitate in recommending this to anyone. DEFO go for the superior room, only a few quid more, worth every penny!!!

Room Tip: go for the garden and sea view rooms, wonderful!

Tripadvisor lists this establishment only under bed and breakfast options in spite of its four star hotel rating. The Hotel Quinta da Penha de França is based upon an old manor house situated in what would originally have been the outskirts of Funchal. It has developed, and now comprises a complex of buildings. Many of the bedrooms are situated in the main block but others are in the manor house or other small buildings scattered throughout the delightful grounds. We spent five nights in number 18, effectively a semi-detached bungalow with its own outside sitting area. It was quite spacious although furnished in a rather old-fashioned way. The mattresses were acceptable but, perhaps, not really up to rating of the establishment and the least comfortable of those we slept on during our visit to Madeira. The breakfast buffet was adequate and dinner, which we took only once was acceptable if unexciting hotel fare. However, we found several decent restaurants within a few minutes’ walk. There are various public areas including a large, airy and comfortable lounge, a games room and the intimate Joe’s Bar where we happily rounded off our evenings. This is a family run hotel and it shows in the general attitude of all the staff which is outstanding. Many of the guests seem to return regularly and it was easy to understand why. If in Funchal again this would certainly be our chosen hotel.

We stayed twice in this hotel for periods of 8-10 days (August 2003 and August 2010). The hotel has 2 different sections: the main section on the Cliff over the see where is the lobby, and another section at sea level in front of the pool and sea. In both visits we stayed on the main section, which has exceedingly friendly and comfortable rooms, most of them if not all, with a private "varanda" facing west, where you can be drinking a good wine in the evening with a nice view over the sea. The breakfast is a superb buffet. In the pool area, you can choose to dive in the pool or in the sea which has a magnificent temperature. It's perfect for those who have children (from 4-5 years thereon), as they can walk freely through the gardens, pool, etc, safely, while the parents take a rest; note that there are rooms that can be connected. In my opinion, this hotel has 2 features that make it unique: (a) being a medium size hotel with an exemplary professional service, has simultaneously a taste of "family home" e.g., it's not a stereotypical plastic hotel and (2) it is one of few hotels near the center of Funchal with direct ocean access (through a lift).

Room Tip: On the upper section on the cliff, with varanda, facing west
