“Like a stay with the family”

This quinta is a little haven of peace in the busy capital of Madeira, Funchal. It has few if any pretensions but does what it does very well. It's excellent staff take good care of their house guests as if they are part of their family. It's rooms are not luxurious or grand. They are small and simple. We stayed in a terraced room with our own verandah and green space. Here you are really part of a small complex with beautiful gardens, an excellent pool and views over the gardens and out across the harbour to the sea. The food is very good and good value with a good choice, whether for breakfast, lunch or evening meal. Meals can be taken in the restaurant or on the terrace overlooking the gardens. The reception and lounge area is quite large with wifi access. This was an ideal base for our trips to discover the town, 10 minutes walk away, or explore the island by organise trip or bus.

Room Tip: If you prefer easy access to the restaurant, bar, and gardens, the terraced rooms might suit. If a v...

If you like concrete boxes for a holiday, this is not for you. We like the old with character feel even if the odd floorboard creaks or the sash windows rattle a little bit. Great location to get into the main Funchal action with nothing more than a maximum 15 minute stroll. The people in the hotel are very friendly, attentive and helpful. Everywhere in the hotel irrespective of the time of day there are staff around cleaning up, picking leaves, the pool area or some type of tidying, the place is spotless. We even had our bed turned down whist out in the late afternoon.
Restaurant on site that serves a large choice for a good start to the day breakfast.
Joe's bar was a must for us, on our way out for dinner the first stop for a dry Martini and the last stop on the way back for a G&T. A nice atmosphere with pleasant staff for all your cocktail needs to the background of light jazz vocal music helps the chill out factor of any holiday.
Great family owned hotel, we will return.

We enjoyed a great 7 night stay here, a big and comfortable superior room, really good balcony and a lovely view. Yes the hotel could do with a bit of an update in furnishings and decor but it is difficult to criticise it when the general ambiance is so relaxing and peaceful yet only 10 minutes walk to the centre of Funchal. There are four very good restaurants within a couple of hundred metres the best of which is the Dona Amelia where a fabulous meal for two with wine and excellent service is less than €60. All in all a great choice of hotel and very enjoyable visit.

Booked this hotel for its location which is one of the few positives. Easy to access Funchal centre if you cross the bridge and descend through the other hotel saves a trek up the hill!!
We had a room in the house which was not worth it. The room was large but quite shabby, three windows but no balcony. The curtains were faded and the TV very small and it gave up towards the end of our stay. It was quite noisy when people came in and a yapping dog meant an afternoon nap was virtually impossible!!
The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful, especially when the hot water to our room was non-existent on one day, got someone to sort it within a couple of hours.
Food at breakfast was adequate and staff were quick to replenish supplies.

We have just returned from a week at this hotel and our first time in Madeira. As it is our choice to avoid the large impersonal 'plastic' hotels, the Penha de Franca was an excellent choice discovered through Tripadvisor.

Our room was in the old/original house, was very spacious, did not have a balcony or terrace but had all facilities provided. However, as other people have reported, the room could do with some updating.

On a B&B basis, we only ate breakfast in the hotel enjoying local restaurants for other meals. The buffet contained virtually the same hot and cold selections every day but was always fresh and appetising. As with all buffet breakfasts, you can 'fill yer boots'!

The bridge linking this hotel with its sister the Franca Mar down the hill, provided some relief from the uphill and downhill walking. The gardens were a lovely attraction even though it was a few weeks too early in the year to get the full benefit of the blooms.

I rented a car for 2 days through reception and got a good car at a favourable rate. So far, my credit card has not been robbed as frequently happens with a number of the major car rental companies.

For dining out, we discovered 3 excellent restaurants within a very short walking distance of the hotel along Rua Imperatriz D' Amelia. The house wine, both red & white, was excellent in all 3 restaurants.

The Casa Velha - absolutely superb food and professional service in excellent surroundings at a reasonable price.

The Dona Amelia, owned by the same people as the Casa Velha and at the top of the hotel's drive - excellent food and surroundings at a slightly cheaper price with more laid back service.

Behind the Irish pub on the corner with a Turkish place just behind, there is the Casal da Pehna just behind that - absolutely wonderful food and service at a good price, all so good that we ate there 3 times in our week!

We would definitely return but a month or 2 later in the year to get the benefit of all the flowers.

Not having been to Madeira before, we weren't sure what to expect, and could see that there were the usual multi-storey hotels you see on the Costas, but no beach. We found this place on TripAdvisor, and my wife liked the idea of the gardens, so we thought we'd give it a go.
It must have started as a large house, and has been extended considerably, including a new hotel block. Like most of Madeira, the grounds are at an angle with steps to different parts. Our room was in the older block. Very nice, but a little tired. The balcony was close to the restaurant, but noise was never a problem, and we had reasonable views of the gardens. We enjoyed the (slightly) heated pool, and the access to the sister hotel. The restaurant was excellent, and we chose to eat there often. The bar was good too with the barman making animals out of fruit for the cocktails.
By coincidence, some old friends were on the same flight and stayed in a more normal hotel a few hundred yards away, and although well rated, they didn't like it.
My only regret is that I didn't get to the nearby Irish bar

In a quiet location within easy walking distance of Funchal centre. Good size room with balcony overlooking the attractive garden in which there was a good swimming pool. Bedroom furniture needed replacement - we had a chest of drawers between the beds with drawers that jammed and a small table with kitchen chair in lieu of a dressing table. No mirror. On the plus side plenty of wardrobe space, but overall not a four star room. Restaurant is in a separate building reached through the garden. OK until it rains. Dining room rather crowded and food served via the garden, which meant it was not always as hot as it should have been. Nice lounge and helpful staff but they do need to update rooms.
