I just used the pool and the restaurant, it was really great and enjoyable. The view is good and the pool is really nice. The food was great, I personally recommend the "filite peixe de espada com banana" it's a typical dish from Madeira Island and Penha de França Restaurant was where I eat the best of this dish

We have not stayed in the hotel, just visited the grounds, which look lovely.
It's a beautiful location, and walking by several times, we liked the setting of it on a hill overlooking sea and harbour. So, we decided to have lunch there on a Sunday.
The restaurant is sort of tucked away behind the hotel, so no seaview and just a bit of a garden view. The red checked table cloths made it look like a simple Italian place. That would have been fine as far as we're concerned, but it was nothing like that. Just your average Portuguese food, nothing outstanding there. A quite small and not very special wine list. Service was rather indifferent and too much taking the customers for granted.
Table and chairs of heavy metal (no music there!), very hard to move.
All together not a place we will come back to. Such a pity, because we will live nearby from September, and we had hoped this would be a nice place to have lunch or just drinks from time to time.

Our second stay. The hotel is ten minutes walk away from the town centre but it is so well contained in beautifully kept gardens you would never know. Our room was like a small chalet with its own patio - a little cramped but not a problem as we were not often in it - except to sleep. The restaurant is good but there is a plethora of restaurants locally - many within a couple of minutes walk. The hotel is quirky and interesting but there are lots of steps. There is a pleasant swimming pool with great views of the sea. There is a sister hotel at the water's edge (Franca Mar) where there is a snack bar (great cappuccino) and another and much bigger swimming pool and access to the sea. There is a resident diving school too if that takes your fancy. This hotel is just a few minutes walk away with access via a bridge and lift.

The service is excellent and very responsive. Any queries or problems are dealt with immediately. The staff are very friendly and all speak excellent English. We witnessed a medical emergency and the hotel staff acted swiftly and efficiently with an ambulance on site within less than 5 minutes.

Transfer to airport by taxi takes 20-25 minute. There are a couple of small supermarkets very close to the hotel. Free wifi in reception area.

All in all a great stay in a relatively small and quirky hotel with good access to Funchal and good local amenities.

Room Tip: Several of the chalet style rooms have a private terrace - most of the more modern rooms have a balcony

My wife and I picked this hotel from the others nearby as I reckoned from the reviews that it would suit us best, and it was the right choice. It has a charm the others hotels (even the neighbouring and connected Quita da Penha de Mar) lack. I can't give it 5 stars only because I know that those reading the reviews would expect a 5 star resort to have more facilities. Our room was clean, quiet and decently decorated although the carpets were a bit worn. We paid a brief visit to the neighbouring Quinta's 2 big seaside pools with all the typical resort facilities and then used the smaller pool in our sections garden from then on. It was lovely. Breakfast was great: all we could wish for, although the cooked choices were limited, and I was happy with that. The atmosphere in the large public rooms was lovely and the hotel is the closest of all of the hotels in this area to the centre of Funchal, maybe a 10 or 15 minute stroll, and if you want to avoid the hill on the way back, you can walk to the neighbouring Quita and take the lift up before walking across a small bridge into de Franca. I agree with an earlier review about the charge for a safety deposit box being mean. Oh well...Oh, and the staff, including in the dining area where we had breakfast, were very friendly and efficient. This remains my first choice for a resort style hotel in Funchal- no question.

I had mixed feelings about what to expect as when i read these reviews they went from one extreme to the other. I think the trick is to leave valuable feedback, not petty comments.
As a young/small family we stayed in a room on a small terrace in the old part and loved that our room was oldie-woldie...the bedroom and reception area felt like you were staying at your grandparents house which we liked! (None of this modern furniture each room the same where you could be anywhere!) The bathroom was modern and we had ample space for us.
Staff were so very polite and helpful at all times. Hotel was clean and the gardens beautifully kept...a lovely little oasis amongst the high rise modern hotels. We will be returning for sure!

Room Tip: If you want to enjoy the true ambiance...stay in the "older" part of the Hotel
