“On our return to list !!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014

Just returned from 10 days here. This hotel is in 2 parts, one by the sea and the other can be walked to via a foot bridge. We stayed in a ground floor sea view room that was spotlessly clean and more than adequate, with a good sized balcony. The large pool area always had enough sun beds with plenty of large sun umbrellas. The pool attendant" Aldo " looked after not just us , but everyone ! He really made our stay very enjoyable as he always arranged our sun beds and towels etc. There was occasional problems swimming in the sea next to the swimming pool with small Jelly fish, whenever this happened Aldo would put a red flag up and tell guests of the problem. We stayed on a B & B basis and found breakfast more than adequate. There are a lot of bars close by. The number 2 bar and the Red Lion are a 3 or 4 minute walk up the hill that both served good snacks and meals. Beer around 2.30 Euros and a nice cocktail around 5 Euros. There are many good restaurants all within 5 - 10 minutes walk towards Funchal town. Overall, we found the hotel and staff to be very good and we will definitely be returning soon as we had such a relaxing and enjoyable time here.

The hotel is located very close to the town, yet it is very peaceful, quiet and relaxing. The staff are very friendly and always willing to help. The food is of a very good quality, with a wide selection at the breakfast buffet. There is also a varied menu for lunch / dinner, with entertainment provided on some evenings.

Room Tip: My preference is for the lateral sea view / garden view rooms.

Great place, very quiet and peaceful, but so close to the city centre and marina, with direct access to the ocean, 2 restaurants, pools, garden, professional, very kind staff, clean rooms with ocean view, tasty breakfast. Highly recommended.

We had a garden room on the second floor for our week in Madeira at the end of July. Pleasant views across the garden and the pool area, with the sea in the background. The room was very comfortable and quiet, and the air conditioning just about coped. We used the pool most days, often having it to ourselves, and the water temperature was perfect. Our package included breakfast, which was fine, with a good choice and friendly service. We had dinner in the restaurant on 2 occasions. The food is OK and not expensive but there are nearby restaurants which are better.

The staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the airport, which I would recommend, as the taxi driver is there to welcome you and the fare is cheaper than in a taxi in the airport queue. Staff at the reception desk arranged a couple of walks/tours for us, making useful recommendations. Wi-fi is available in the large lounge and the reception area.

Don't confuse this hotel with the Quinta Penha de Franca Mar, which is part of the complex, is close by but has a very different feel to it. The rooms here overlook a 25 metre pool on the seafront, and there are rows of poolside sun loungers. There is a restaurant adjacent to the pool area which is open for breakfast and lunch, and for two evenings serves dinner as well. Similar menu to the Penha de Franca. There are arrangements which enable residents to use either pool.

I just used the pool and the restaurant, it was really great and enjoyable. The view is good and the pool is really nice. The food was great, I personally recommend the "filite peixe de espada com banana" it's a typical dish from Madeira Island and Penha de França Restaurant was where I eat the best of this dish

We have not stayed in the hotel, just visited the grounds, which look lovely.
It's a beautiful location, and walking by several times, we liked the setting of it on a hill overlooking sea and harbour. So, we decided to have lunch there on a Sunday.
The restaurant is sort of tucked away behind the hotel, so no seaview and just a bit of a garden view. The red checked table cloths made it look like a simple Italian place. That would have been fine as far as we're concerned, but it was nothing like that. Just your average Portuguese food, nothing outstanding there. A quite small and not very special wine list. Service was rather indifferent and too much taking the customers for granted.
Table and chairs of heavy metal (no music there!), very hard to move.
All together not a place we will come back to. Such a pity, because we will live nearby from September, and we had hoped this would be a nice place to have lunch or just drinks from time to time.

Our second stay. The hotel is ten minutes walk away from the town centre but it is so well contained in beautifully kept gardens you would never know. Our room was like a small chalet with its own patio - a little cramped but not a problem as we were not often in it - except to sleep. The restaurant is good but there is a plethora of restaurants locally - many within a couple of minutes walk. The hotel is quirky and interesting but there are lots of steps. There is a pleasant swimming pool with great views of the sea. There is a sister hotel at the water's edge (Franca Mar) where there is a snack bar (great cappuccino) and another and much bigger swimming pool and access to the sea. There is a resident diving school too if that takes your fancy. This hotel is just a few minutes walk away with access via a bridge and lift.

The service is excellent and very responsive. Any queries or problems are dealt with immediately. The staff are very friendly and all speak excellent English. We witnessed a medical emergency and the hotel staff acted swiftly and efficiently with an ambulance on site within less than 5 minutes.

Transfer to airport by taxi takes 20-25 minute. There are a couple of small supermarkets very close to the hotel. Free wifi in reception area.

All in all a great stay in a relatively small and quirky hotel with good access to Funchal and good local amenities.

Room Tip: Several of the chalet style rooms have a private terrace - most of the more modern rooms have a balc...
