“Historically important”
Reviewed 26 July 2013

Reading up on the history of this Cathedral made me really appreciate its importance as one of the few building to have survived since the early colonisation of the Island. Unlike most Catholic churches, the Cathedral is modest in its interior adornments creating a more spiritual feel. The exterior architecture is also unusual. Before visiting, it's advisable to check the times of the Services.

“Little piece of history”
Reviewed 3 July 2013

Right in the middle of Funchal, not as ornate as some of the other churches we saw on the island but you could ` feel` the history as you walked around. Not v large but steeped in its heritage.

“Lovely cathedral”
Reviewed 29 June 2013

A warm, inviting, tranquil place right in the centre of Funchal. Open to the public from 7.30 to again and again after 4pm. A very easy place to pray.

We had to visit 3 times before we found the cathedral open. Really disappointing inside, very dark and not welcoming

“Distinctive bells”
Reviewed 18 June 2013

The bell peals before mass were really unusual. Well worth hearing even if you don't go in. We attended a tourist mass which had some readings in English and German with a sizeable choir. Cathedral seems to close in the afternoons, so check opening times if you plan to visit.
