Every time I need to kill some time or relax in the city, I go to the São Francisco garden. Scattered benches, surrounded by trees and flowers, with birds singing and sometimes live ambient music wafting in from the Ritz café and Café do Museu, it's one of my favourite spots in Funchal.

These gardens are perfectly located in the centre of Funchal and offer a wide range of trees and shrubs with ample seating in the paved walkways.

Small but lovely to spend some time relaxing and absorbing the environment. There are benches scattered around and many types of plants to enjoy. We are glad we stopped here, you will be too.

If the torist stuff gets you down then step away from the main street into this little park and chill. Lovely place to regather your thoughts for more tourism!!!!!

Also known as the Municipal Garden, this little haven just a couple minutes' walk from the marina is only small, but is absolutely beautiful. It's an established garden, exceedingly well maintained and is immediately opposite the Ritz Café which means you can sit and enjoy their live music from the shade of the garden, there is a beautiful pond with fountains and a statue of two children in which there is a resident swan, there is a stage area, a small café in one corner by the stage and on Saturdays a flea market sets up along the pathways with local craftsmen also selling their wares (I bought a beautiful bracelet from one jewellery maker)
