We were enjoying our walk around the beautiful gardens until we got to the bird park. The ringed doves were featherless and still pulled out what little fluff they had left. Brown parrots ran up their cage walls along the ceiling and down the other side biting at the metal in a desperate and repetitive attempt to get out. Peacocks were caged in pens so small that they could only perch, with no room to fan out their beautiful tails. Practically every cage was bare with only a perch and nothing else for the bored and stressed birds to play with. There was no opportunity for any of them to demonstrate any natural behaviour with many birds just pacing up and down or continually nodding. We left feeling very down, wishing we'd never gone and wanting to make people who are thinking of visiting aware if what they'd be letting themselves in for. There are plenty of gardens to visit in Madeira and around Funchal. Go to one where you won't see animal captivity at it's worst and boycott this place until they do something about the terrible conditions the birds are in.

We had a rental car that day, so instead of taking the teleferico we decided to drive uphill to see the gardens. It is an easy and quick drive from Funchal city. When we arrived the parking lot was empty so we even thought we might have taken a wrong turn. There's an elevator to go downstairs. The entrance costs only 3 euros and it is really worth it! The gardens are very nice and you can easily spend hours walking and observing the plants and the scenery. Recommended!

We went to the botanic gardens by bus from central Funchal which was an experience in itself. At €3, which includes entrance to the attached Loiro Parque (Exotic Bird Park), the gardens are fairly cheap to visit.

The gardens themselves consist of extensive paths through various themed sections, the most impressive being the cactus garden and the area around the cafe, with a colourful array of tropical plants and flowers, which were still putting on a beautiful display in the middle of November! The views down into the adjacent valley and out over Funchal are well worth seeing particularly from the "Lovers Cave" above where the cable car from Monte arrives.

The attached exotic bird park does unfortunately seem a little neglected, although the birds seemed to be in good physical health with some room to fly, the cages are rather bare and some, especially the pigeons, were very cramped.

travelled by cable car (via monte) and it was really impressive. I'm not normally a 'gardens' person, but this was a good day out. The gardens are varied and expansive, and the views are great.

It only costs 3 euros to visit the botanical gardens in Funchal, and it's really well worth it. The gardens are well stocked and tended, even in March (I'd love to see these gardens in summer) and they have lots of exotic birds too - white peacocks as well as the more usual blue ones, and they seem to love displaying their gorgeous feathers at every opportunity. Their are also some funny noisy little frogs in special ponds - not sure what tyoe they are but they're very funny to listen to!

The views over Funchal harbour are wonderful, and just above the gardens is the cable car up to Monte - its 12.75 euros return but go......on a clear day, the views are just breathtaking. A really lovely way to while away a few hours.
