We were enjoying our walk around the beautiful gardens until we got to the bird park. The ringed doves were featherless and still pulled out what little fluff they had left. Brown parrots ran up their cage walls along the ceiling and down the other side biting at the metal in a desperate and repetitive attempt to get out. Peacocks were caged in pens so small that they could only perch, with no room to fan out their beautiful tails. Practically every cage was bare with only a perch and nothing else for the bored and stressed birds to play with. There was no opportunity for any of them to demonstrate any natural behaviour with many birds just pacing up and down or continually nodding. We left feeling very down, wishing we'd never gone and wanting to make people who are thinking of visiting aware if what they'd be letting themselves in for. There are plenty of gardens to visit in Madeira and around Funchal. Go to one where you won't see animal captivity at it's worst and boycott this place until they do something about the terrible conditions the birds are in.
