Not the best gardens in Madeira and the bird park is shambolic, with some atrocious conditions for the caged birds.

Well worth the second cable car & climb down . You will need to be prepared to do some walking ...down & up quite steep slopes ....but a very worth while experience with some beautiful plants & views...again not to be missed

We really enjoyed visiting the Botanical Gardens. The weather was great and the gardens were beautifully presented. It was very steep and not at all accessible for anyone disabled, but if you are fit and able, make the effort it is worth it.

We reached these gardens by way of the cable car, which was convenient and picturesque. The gardens occupy - inevitably, for Madeira - a sloping site, so we took the sensible decision of wandering our way pretty much straight downhill, down one side of the gardens, and then making our way back up again gradually, zig-zagging gently upwards, so that the climb was not so onerous as it might have been. These gardens are lovely and varied, with plenty to see, and lots of interest for adults and children alike - with a whole area of aviaries full of different birds, including parrots and budgies, and where there is also an enclosure with turtles in, as well as the formal planting and an amazing cactus garden. The natural history museum is small and quaint!

The gardens are delightful but very difficult if you have mobility issues. There are lots of cobblestone paths and also many steps.
They have large collections of plants which are grouped in ways which are attractive and easy to understand eg succulents all in one area, palm trees in another etc. The tropical birds were apparently fit & well but their housing was uninspiring & it was a pity they weren't integrated with the plants.
