Well set out garden with lots of varirty although a map on a leaflet in our hands would have been more helpful to working out the best route than relying on the large map at the beginning and the others which were available at a few other places in the garden. We liked the garden although not quite as much as the Monte Palace Tropical garden as this is set out more for scientific interest than combining plants to complement each other. We didn't like the avaries - the birds are confined in cages which are too small. It would be much better (for the birds particularly) to have the whole area to be one big aviary where they can spread their wings and fly around more.

Beautiful! Bring cash as the cafe won't accept any cards. Do however miss the bird park. How very sad to see such beautiful birds kept in such poor conditions.

Very steep paths accessing from the cable car/car park so very difficult for people with mobility issues.
The gardens themselves were a let down, very few flowers in bloom and mainly trees and green vegetation. The cafe was the one saving grace where you can enjoy a drink with a view.

Tip start at the top and work your way down to the exit at the bottom (near the rather scruffy birdhouse) then get a Taxi back up to the top for about 5 euros...money well spent unless you're a goat.

These gardens a definitely worth a visit. You can get the bus up for 3.20 return and spend a couple of hours wandering around the different areas of the gardens, which include plants and flowers from different parts of the world. Very relaxing and there's a nice cafe where you can get your complementary glass of Madeira wine while admiring the great view over the bay (at bit pricey at 10 euros but just as relaxing as a massage!).

Visited these gardens in April '14 and had a great afternoon. The number 29 bus from the station was cheap and ran frequently up the hill to the gardens. The climb was quite something in itself as it is very steep. There is a museum of natural history in the 'Monet' style house in the grounds but the flowers and trees are the stars of this attraction. There are some very steep inclines as the grounds are laid out on the hill side, so we had to take it easy as we walked around, stopping all of the time to take photos, catch our breath, mop our brows and to look at the stunning views over Funchal and the sea.

There are many different areas, for example the arboretum, climbing plants, medicinal plants, birds (parrots etc) and the topiary. At the very top of the grounds there is a slope taking you to a cafe and the cable car which takes you to Monte and a chance to see the tropical gardens there. The cafe serves excellent snacks and drinks which are very welcome after the (quite strenuous) walk around the gardens. There are fabulous views from the outdoor seating area, worth seeing.

There are just two points that could have been better, the caged birds were not housed in a very stimulating environment. I felt sorry for them. Also on the way back down from the cable car and cafe area, the two ladies at the booth remonstrated with us, thinking that we had come down the cable car and tried to get into the gardens without paying! When we showed our tickets they snatched them off us unapologetically. This upset me a little as I wanted to keep the tickets as a souvenir and I felt there was no need for them to be unpleasant. All the other staff we met were very friendly.
