This is a wonderful garden high up above Funchal giving amazing views. The garden is divided into various areas, a topiary, parrot park, aboreteum, hug ecarpet of flowers, greenhouses and has a lovely open air cafe

A beautiful garden which always enchants whatever time of year you visit. The succulent section is just amazing.

If you visit just one garden in Madeira, then this one is probably the best to visit as it has the most comprehensive collection you will find.

Tremendous views, some interesting plant specimens, main part was a bit municipal, Some of the Hotel gardens in Funchal are every bit as nice and free. One of the best was next to The Magic Tea cafe on the Lido absolutely amazing, worth buying a cup of coffee for.
The aviary at the botanic gardens was distressing the cages looked filthy and the poor peacocks were stuck in a small cage with hardly any room to move never mind show off their feathers.

Maderia - a special microclimate; host to a unique range of naturalised exotic plants from subtropical areas of the world growing on the mineral-rich volcanic terrain. And yes these plants are growing healthily and profusely and are well-represented in these gardens. But it could have been so much more of an informative and memorable experience. In the Native Indigenous species section - no descriptions, name labels and no information about why these are less commonly seen now. And the succulents, climbers, bulbous plants, trees and shrubs, many of which in glorious flower, very very little information as to what they are called even, let alone their historical origins. Just a some largely illegible ancient "Dymo" labels by a few of them. There are no leaflets available at the entrance to act as a guide. The caged birds section was sad and these birds should be re-housed in much larger pens. This is the showcase botanical gardens of Madeira and could, no should, have been much better, even world-famous, but they are not. And the inclusive return trip via the cable cars from the waterfront is quite expensive. (€30 a head)
