Owner description: The gardens at "Quinta do Palheiro" are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Madeira has long been called the "Garden Isle" and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil. The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 meters above sea level and were started in 1801 by the original owner the Conde de Carvalhal. He introduced Camellias to the Island, hence our vast collection. The gardens, some 14 hectares (with about 650 species of plants),include the Camellia avenue, Main Garden, Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Long Border and the Ladies' Garden where you find the tea house. There is also the Ribeiro do Inferno, a deep valley with treeferns and indigenous plants.

“most beautiful garden in Madeira”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

Worth the price and bus-trip or taxi-ride from central Funchal.
In february everything says springtime:flowers from magnolia soulangea, camellia,s,south african flowers.
Lovely and relaxing and a garden with varied planting and lots of details.
Other gardens in Madeira are very pleasant as well but this is the must see one

“what a dissapointment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2013

Not much to see in this garden this time of year. However, the weeds and neglect was a sorry site. Not worth paying 10 euros for this!

“A delightful visit with unusual plants”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 November 2013

We took the bus and spent about 2-3 hours as half way through we had coffee and delicious cake. There are some most unusual and beautiful plants including angels trumpets and King Protea which are amazing. There is also a chapel built by the Conde. and some interesting ponds with frogs, koi carp and gold fish. A leaflet with a map and description of plants can be bought for 1 Euro at the entrance. Don't miss the walk Ribeiro do Inferno(walk of Hell!) but only if you are sure footed. This is a forest walk with some lovely wild flowers, arum lilies and agapanthus.

“Beautiful gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2013

we enjoyed wondering around the gardens. caught a taxi up and the bus back which was an experience going along all the winding roads. I was particularly fascinated by the planting schemes. many of which were plants we could find in the UK but because of the climate has grown into much larger and imposing specimens.

We loved this garden. The day we visited it was very quiet and peaceful. We preferred this to the garden in Monte
