Owner description: The gardens at "Quinta do Palheiro" are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Madeira has long been called the "Garden Isle" and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil. The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 meters above sea level and were started in 1801 by the original owner the Conde de Carvalhal. He introduced Camellias to the Island, hence our vast collection. The gardens, some 14 hectares (with about 650 species of plants),include the Camellia avenue, Main Garden, Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Long Border and the Ladies' Garden where you find the tea house. There is also the Ribeiro do Inferno, a deep valley with treeferns and indigenous plants.

We made a special journey on the bus and, to be honest, we thought the bus journey was the best part. It was interesting to see the frogs jumping in and out of the pond.

If you like mansions with a spirit (although you cannot visit the house) and enjoy tropical flowers, this is the place to go in Funchal !

Well we thought so, the gardens are an absolute delight with different styles within the grounds. Try to go when there are no coach parties visiting and you will have the place to yourself, the parties seem to arrive in the morning. An irregular bus service operates to the front gates but you can always get a taxi, and on the return if a taxi is being paid to wait while the people are in the garden, you can negotiate a really good deal for the trip back to Funchal during the taxi driver's waiting time!

We took the bus which stops right outside the gardens.

The gardens are well maintained and offer much better varieties than Monte Gardens at thetop of the cable car.

There are panoramic views across the city and the neighbouring golf course.

The coffee shop in the grounds is also worth a visit

A lovely classic English garden and the one we enjoyed the most while we were in Funchal. Tea house a tranquil spot too.
