Owner description: The island of Madeira is called the pearl of the Atlantic. It has unrivalled beauty and perfectly unites the history of a city with nature, creating a unique combination of traditions, colours and characteristics that contribute to the unequalled nature of the island. Douro Acima has been operating in Funchal since 2008. It offers a circuit that takes in the main points of the city, including one of the main points for breathtaking views - Pico dos Barcelos. Start: Estrada Monumental - Lido Duration: 90 min. Frequency: Every 30 min. Timetable: 9h30 - 17h Validity: 24 hours Ticket price: Adult: EUR 12; Child: EUR 6

We used it for orientation purposes on arrival to good effect and used it to good effect hopping on and off around the city. Interesting to note they have recently extended the life of the ticket from 24 to 48 hours and tour also incorporates Camara De Lobos (to match Yellow Bus Tours).

We chose the Red Bus to go up to Pico dos Barcelos to give a great view of the City.

I would echo other comments on the commentary - weak, poor and many sockets do not work.

I would still recommend it.

We had 2 days on this tour which was excellent. It goes right up to Pico dos Barcelos which gives a great view over Funchal town. There is a café up there , shops and WC facilities which makes it a good place for a stop. We also asked about St Martins Church and although it is not an official stop the driver dropped us off near there so we could have a look round. The tour also goes to Camara de Lobos which is very picturesque as well as all around Funchal itself. Very good value for money.

Great tour through the narrow and steep streets of the city, then up to the Pico dos Barcelos viewing point where the wind would take your head off and the views are amazing. The in to Camarasa de Lobos where we stopped for lunch and a stroll around the picturesque harbour then back along the Estrada monumental to town. The buses are very frequent so getting off and on was great. We didn't bother with the commentary.

We have taken a few City Sightseeing tours in recent years in several big cities across the world and unfortunately this one of the Funchal area proved to be quite disappointing.

No "live" guide to give commentary, just a very weak, monotonously droned pre-recorded narration with lots of gaps in the presentation, annoyingly filled with Christmas music! It was the middle of January for heavens sake! I gave up with the earphones as they were awkward enough in themselves without the torture of crooners delivering their belated Xmas tunes as well!

We started on the promenade, a pleasant tree lined avenue and from there, I`m sorry to say, the tour went "downhill" - or should I say "uphill"! It was honestly quite boring with lots of views of various buildings, tunnels and very ordinary streets. Very little to write home about until we chugged up the hill to the viewpoint, the Pico dos Barcelos which gives you a virtual 360 degree panorama of Funchal, it`s harbour and the surrounding hills.

Mind you, as this was one of the two "highlights" of the tour, the other being the small fishing town and harbour of Camara dos Lobos, it did not represent good value for 12€ each, particularly as we visited the viewpoint again, a few days later on the Nuns Valley half-day tour, just 10€ and the fishing village for the second time when on the North-West tour, 28€ for the full day including a lunch!

We got off at the western end of the Estrada Monumental and took our time to walk back into town, a much better way to spend our time.

Recommended? Sorry but no! Get a good guide book and walk about the place. Much more satisfying And take those two separate tours I mentioned. Now they are to be recommended!.

We bought tickets and went through Funchal and eventually got off at the fishing village for lunsj. The bus was on time all the time, and the guiding interesting.
