The view over Funchal and the surrounding sea is breathtaking. And the course is very much worth the climb. Be prepared for a challenge if you decide to walk as it is very hilly, especially the first and the 16-17 holes. The design of the course is very interesting, each of the holes bringing a different style. Most often you need to leave the driver in the bag even on the longest par 5 as the maintenance is not at its best: when we played in march, the grass was extremely dry, resulting in very long shots, somehow uncontrollable. Excellent food at the club house to celebrate your achievements with a lovely view over the city.

The Golfcourse is interesting, in good shape and quite demanding.
We were glad to have a cart every time we played.

Having read the earlier reviews, we were looking forward to our lunchtime visit to the golf club restaurant. We took the local number 33 bus from Funchal centre and thankfully the day remained fine and sunny. On arrival in the small village adjacent to the Palheiro estate we failed to check the times of buses for our return. This was a mistake as on our departure we found we had an hour and a half to kill. The walk from the bus stop to the golf club is approx 600m uphill. The view from the terrace is every bit as spectacular as previously described and in my opinion just about worth the effort of the bus trip but unfortunately the level of service left a great deal to be desired. It was slow and unfriendly and whilst the food was acceptable and the place was not packed, the delay in taking our order and then delivery of the food was unacceptable. Pleased we made the effort but there will be no repeat visit unless I'm staying on the complex and playing golf.

We stayed at the Casa Velha do Palheiro and played seven rounds of golf at this lovely golf course. The views are spectacular and some of the holes are very tricky. It helps to be fit as the walk up to some of the holes is pretty steep, especially getting to the green on 16 and then on to the 17th tee. Next time both my husband and I will carry the clubs as it is much easier than to pulling a trolley!
The staff in the shop were very helpful and friendly as was the manager.
The food in the restaurant was very good value for money and also very good. The reason we enjoyed our visits to the restaurant so much was the fact that the staff are so friendly and helpful.
The views over Funchal from the terrace of the restaurant are excellent - we were lucky as we had nice weather for most of our visit.
