Just returned from the fabulous Cliff Bay, our first time to Madeira, but, definitely not our last. We fell in love with the hotel and the island. The Cliff Bay certainly deserves it's 5* rating - awesome views, lovely rooms, superb facilities and friendly and very helpful staff. We were very lucky and had super weather all week. Can highly recommend Restaurant Tokos (just turn left outside the hotel) super little restaurant, excellent food and highly entertaining banter from the owner/chef and his staff. Lots of good places to eat in Funchal, and everywhere the Maderian people are so friendly and have a wicked sense of humour. Can't wait to go back!

We stayed at the Cliff Bay hotel for a week to celebrate my mother's 80th Birthday. The hotel was beautiful, the service impeccable and the staff could not have done more to make my mother's birthday special. I would highly recommend the champagne breakfast!!
We shall certainly be returning.

Following extensive research (we used to stay at the Savoy before they pulled it down), including reading the various comments on TA, we chose to spend our honeymoon at the Cliff Bay in August/September 2010 and cannot speak too highly of the staff and establishment - we enjoyed it so much we are returning for our anniversary in August 2011.

Helpful and friendly staff, lovely rooms, gorgeous views and fabulous food - can't wait to go back!

We have stayed at the Cliff Bay hotel many times and will return very soon. All the local taxi drivers say this is the best hotel on Madeira and we agree.

During our last visit we decided to try the hotel’s Michelin star restaurant, the Gallo D’or. We had three courses a la Carte (plus three complimentary dishes) I can’t fault the food. It was modern, imaginative, international cuisine. The kitchen timed the intervals between the courses well. My only observation is that several ingredients appear in both starters and mains on the menu so it is difficult to avoid ordering the same ingredient twice.

However, it is the service we experienced which spoiled our evening and might put us off going back to the restaurant. It was enthusiastic and well meaning but in our view is not what you expect in a Michelin star restaurant:-

1. We booked a table one row in from the window, but instead we were put at a table up some steps behind a balustrade at the back of the restaurant where we felt totally out of it. (Incidentally we had taken the trouble to strictly adhere to the dress code). The table we would have liked remained empty all evening.

2. We ordered water and a small bottle of ‘house’ water arrived and was soon drank. There was no replacement/top up offered.

3. As each of the six dishes were served we were ‘instructed’ by the variety of waiting staff to ‘enjoy your food!’. As each plate was taken away we had to tell them whether we had enjoyed it or not. After a while it got a bit wearing. There must be a more subtle way of engaging with the customer and ensuring all is well.

4. While we (and other guests) were still dining, staff stripped the empty tables and nosily laid them out for breakfast. This should have been an absolute no-no. It suggests they are thinking ‘eat up quick - we have homes to go to’.

5. At one point, two of the women doing this, standing at separate tables, took a break and had a long, loud conversation in Portuguese across the room. Maybe this would be ok in a roadside cafe or staff canteen, but not in a five star hotel.

I am sure a bit of staff re-training would fix all of this, and one waitress was the exception.
