Hotel The Cliff Bay
Ranked #4 of 88 Hotels in Funchal
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 5 October 2011

This was our second visit to Madeira and to the Cliff Bay, having visited for the first time in July 2010. Last year we stayed for 1 week, but this year booked for 2 weeks and were so glad we did.

I can only agree with previous reviews - the hotel and its staff are really excellent. We booked a superior room on the 8th floor and upon arrival found that we had been given the same room as last year - great! The room, which was very well furnished, had an excellent bathroom, and had magnificent views of the Atlantic. A real advantage of staying in one of the upper floor rooms is being able to take breakfast in the Il Gallo D'Orro restaurant. An excellent choice of buffet and waiter service, no queues for food and a very relaxing atmosphere - a good start to the day!

Whilst we had a couple of meals in the Rose Garden restaurant, we preferred to eat out in the many good restaurants close to the hotel and in Funchal. Many restaurants tended to specialise in fish and portions tended to be big and good value for money. We dined 3 times in the Il Gallo D'Orro Michelin starred restaurant, including the Saturday Dinner Dance, and thoroughly enjoyed the food, service and ambience. In fact we celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary with a meal in the Il Gallo and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. On our anniversary the hotel put a bouquet of flowers in our room together with a card from the manager - a very nice thought!

We also had lunch occasionally at the Blue Lagoon restaurant, located by the ocean and the sea level swimming pool. The food was varied, well cooked and once again the service was excellent. We had afternoon tea one afternoon in the Cliff Bar and thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife has a gluten free diet and the hotel were very helpful in providing gluten free bread, cakes etc.

The Spa facilities at the hotel are truly excellent and my wife and I had several treatments during our stay.

On this holiday we took some trips around the island (East Island and Nuns Valley) and the scenery was magnificent. We also took the cable car to Monte and would thoroughly recommend that.

We have stayed in many good hotels throughout the world, and the Cliff Bay is amongst the best. We plan to visit again in the near future, and look forward to seeing a little more of the beautiful island of Madeira.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are excellent and although costing more include daily breakfasts in the Il Gallo d...

We stayed here for my 50th Birthday. The experience was virtually faultless. The breakfast buffet was superb. I can add nothing else that has not been said in previous reviews. We found the prompt and regular ingang of certain guests to their dining room sitting most amusing.

We have just returned from another fabulous stay at the Cliff Bay hotel, it seems to, if possible, get better and better every year. The staff in all areas are superb offering excellent service without being intrusive but always on hand when you need them.
We cannot give the name of everyone to thank but would like to mention the Maître D' in both ll Gallo and Rose Garden restaurants and particularly the very helpful and smiling student Sasha on reception.
Thanks to all for a superb holiday.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are excellent , I would however go for the Marina view next time, lots to see.

Having stayed in many 5 star hotels in the Middle East, South East Asia and Australia we really didn't know what to expect, so it came as a welcome surprise to discover that the Cliff Bay is a match for most. The ambience is superb, matched by the service and quality, and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this hotel

Room Tip: Ask for side sea view overlooking the harbour

Just returned from a week away at The Cliff Bay with my wife, and we both had a very enjoyable stay here. HUGE double bed, with a stylish bathroom, and very decent size balcony overlooking the ocean. (Tip: We think better view is on the Harbour side -looking towards Reid's Hotel, and you will also get sunrise: Sunset is obscured on the other side by neighbouring Hotels).
Excellent staff who were all friendly and helpful, and we also very much enjoyed the range and quality of the breakfasts. We stayed B&B so mostly used a local Italian restaurant for the evening meal, but we did have room service meals twice -the quality of which was excellent. The hotel is a gentle 20-25 min walk from Funchal centre, with one incline near the Governors mansion, with taxi's only about 5 Euro (at time of writing) one way. We'd also recommend that you take the 'Afternoon Tea'. My wife also enjoyed the Spa facilities.

Room Tip: Ask for an Ocean facing view towards Funcal centre, and on as high a floor as budget allows.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Cliff bay ( it's our second time in three years ) and we certainly were not disappointed this time round.
We were allocated a sea view room on the eighth floor and it was perfect. The room it's decoration, cleanliness and facilities were impeccable.
The staff we met (at all grades) were friendly and helpful without being intrusive.
My wife sampled the Spa and booked one of the lengthier treatments and came back with nothing but praise for the staff and experience itself - another plus.
During the stay we enjoyed the pool facilities and again the experience was exceptional- there's no great excitement about obtaining sun bed's etc - there are plenty to go round .
The hotel has the ability to add the extra touches without making a fuss - for example I was able to have that days U.K daily newspaper delivered to my room by 7.30 in the morning ( about the same time I get it at home) - now that's service.
The last time we stayed at the hotel we noticed the same old complaint on tripadvisor about the cost of food and drink - I honestly don't think prices have risen since 2009 ( perhaps very slightly). If cost is a problem there are no doubt cheaper hotels, but don't expect 5 star service there.
Will we be back - yes
Our only complaint - the holiday was too short !!!
