“Great Stay in a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Hotel”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

This year my wife and I stayed, for a third time, at the Cliff Bay, Funchal.
Yes, it's a big world out there and you can choose from many hotels and holiday destinations.- but if you are looking for a short flight, trouble free, relaxing holiday, in excellent accommodation, climate and surroundings - this is the place to go.
The hotel is clean, luxurious and the staff friendly and helpful.
The only issue we had was the air conditioning in our room wasn't very effective - I understand from talk around the poolside this was pretty much the norm. Not something we have encountered previously.
Will we be staying at the Cliff Bay,again? - Yes. without a doubt.

Room Tip: Sea View rooms on an upper floor are recommended

My husband and I have just returned from the Cliff Bay hotel, having stayed there previously. It is one of the best hotels we have stayed in for service, food and super staff. Mainly older clients, which suits us fine, and many who go year after year. We had a lovely sea view room. Nothing was too much trouble for all the staff. Varied musical entertainment in the evening without being obtrusive. We always hire a car and travel round this beautiful island. There are many varied restaurants in and around Funchal, so spoiled for choice. We plan another visit probably June next year when the weather is a little more settled. Well done porto-bay hotels. The hotel is still of the highest standard from when I first visited it when it was just one year old! I had a great pedicure which I would truly recommend, and my husband enjoyed his massage!!!

Room Tip: I believe all the rooms are excellent

Stayed here for an 11 night holiday in September 2012 on B+B basis. Its difficult to find fault with this hotel. The room was a standard room wide side sea view - personally I wouldnt pay the extra for a full sea view, you get an impressive view with side view. Receiption are helpful. We ate a couple of times at the hotel's rose garden. The food was good. Not amazing but good enough. Didnt pay the extra for the michelin star restaurant. Would have liked to but the prices were for us, too high and the suggestion by the hotel that you wear jacket and tie made it sound a bit pompous and not really in keeping with the spirit of a holiday or todays modern michelin restaurants. All the areas of the hotel are clean and well maintained. If I had to criticize anything it would be the size of the swimming pool and the busy road outside. There are loads of places to eat in Funchal and very near to the hotel, in fact we found a great restaurant called Lareira (try the paella though you need 3 people to share it) and also X-Tonal down the road.

Thank you for your feedback here at tripadvisor. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay with us. The side sea view rooms normally have some visual impairment for which the sea view rooms and top floors rooms are more unobstructed. We are very proud of our staff members and it pleases me to hear that you found the very attentive.
Hoping to see you soon again in Madeira.

If you live in a world full of silly rules like 'jackets in the bar' or 'slingbacks on the terrace' then you will probably appreciate this hotel's petty corporate snobbery. We booked specifically because of the michelin starred restaurant as we are foodies and were very surprised to be refused entry because of inappropriate dress. We complained and this was never followed up by the staff nor did we receive an apology. Yes the staff are nice and the service is good but the hotel looks totally generic and could be a travelodge in Croydon. We were the only guests under the age of 50 and the whole place has the feel of somewhere trying to give itself some kind of faux colonial pedigree and since this can't be achieved by the look of the hotel it's achieved with silly rules designed to make people uncomfortable and separate 'them' from 'us'. The result is that the hotel is catering for a narrowing customer base of people who are prepared to tolerate such nonsense.

Thank you for your feedback here at Tripadvisor. I am sad to hear that we did not completely correspond to your expectations during your stay. It is on very rare occasions that a public forum like Tripadvisor is used to express disagreement regarding a valuable guest feedback but there seem to exist some necessary clarification to avoid misinterpretations or misunderstandings.
At The Cliff Bay, like in most five star hotels, there exist rules for the comfort and benefit of fellow travelers. For instance we do limit reservations of pool loungers, we have age limits for use of the gym and we do have different dress codes in restaurants. Our Rose Garden Restaurant is smart casual and in our Michelin starred Il Gallo d’Oro despite not being obligatory we do recommend use of Jacket or Tie. There is no jacket rule in any of our bars. I am sad to hear that you consider our advised dress code as corporate snobbery and I fully understand the inconvenience caused that you expressed to our duty manager / food and beverage manager. The dress code is appreciated by most of our guests and is clearly announced in the hotel in various locations, but I do apologize for the inconvenience caused by you not having noticed these announcements.
Unfortunately I do not understand how the age of your fellow travelers cause you inconvenience nor do I understand the meaning of ”rules designed to make people uncomfortable and separate 'them' from 'us'”. Naturally your comparison between our hotel and travel lodge Croydon is an extreme exaggeration.
I do hope that you had a memorable stay in Madeira despite this situation with the dress code and hope that you return to Madeira Island on many more occasions.

We have recently come back from the Cliff Bay and I must say we were extremely sorry to have to leave - our room was ready on arrival which was great - the room was a side sea view and the view was very good - the room itself was very clean and comfortable - it was also nice to have a bath and a separate shower - reception and other public areas very well kept and all the staff were very friendly - our only real disappointment was the evening meal in the Rose Garden - we opted for the buffet and ended up paying over 100 euros for a pretty average meal - also beware the prices of the drinks - I had a non alcoholic cocktail which cost 7.50 euros - over the top even for a 5 star hotel !! - We treated ourselves to a meal in the Michelin starred restaurant Il Gallo D'Oro and I recommend you do the same - it was a very impressive meal - yes its expensive but its a true dining experience.Breakfast is great - so much choice - practically a 3 course meal by itself
The Spa is excellent too - plenty of beds outside on various levels and a nice indoor/ outdoor pool that has a good temperature - if its full there then take the lift ( or the stairs down the cliff face ) down to the sea water pool - a bit chillier but plenty of room to swim about - there is also a place moored out in the sea to swim out to and sunbathe on if you wish.
We had a treatment each at the spa which was on offer but it was great value anyway with Espa products - you certainly got your money's worth too - its not like some placeswhere they put some oil or cream on you and then disappear for 10 minutes - we each got a full 50 minutes worth.
Also my advice for lunch and some dinners would be venture out of the hotel - there are plenty of very nice restaurants around - some are a little bit of a walk away but are well worth it - our own favourite being the Taj Mahal indian restaurant - very friendly staff and the food was excellent.
Please be aware that walking into Funchal town ( or more to the point back from Funchal ) is not for the faint hearted as its a pretty steep walk - the hotel does have a courtesy bus if you feel the need to " wimp out " though.
In summary - an excellent hotel , pricey but worth it and we will be going back - hopefully next year

Writing this whilst sitting on terrace before drive to the airport.

Have stayed a few times at the Cliff Bay and have previously commented.

If you are looking for an all action holiday then Madeira and the Cliff Bay is probably not for you. But, if you are looking for somewhere to unwind from the stresses of working life, parents, children etc then it is perfect. And none better than the Cliff Bay.

The location is terrific. Brilliant views and short walk to Funchal. There is a courtesy bus and taxis are cheep. It is in the hotel district so some of the restaurants are geared to this but there are several that are excellent within walking distance. L'Osteria is currently the best in our opinion. Casa Italia is fine if you are ok with rude surly staff.

We chose to pay extra for a Funchal top floor room although all are of a similar excellent standard. The air con in the rooms is weak though. A small irritation is the mini bar. Soft drinks are free for top floor rooms or prestige customers but when restocked each day it is rarely with those soft drinks you would want. Tomato juice has been fazed out probably because it was popular.

Staff throughout the hotel are excellent. They are very friendly and very helpful. Too many to pick out but Manuel in the Cliff Bay bar and terrace is top rate. So are many of the others.

We eat out most nights but do use Rose Garden for breakfast. Really very good indeed. Great choice and all super fresh. Just those horrible frankfurter sausages are still there. The omelette and egg station is very good. If what you want is not immediately available just ask. It soon will be.

The pool areas are very good as well. Upstairs is super clean. Sea level pool could do with a cosmetic overhaul. We were here during the terrible storms a couple of years back and following that the surface of the pool was renewed. They used a blue/brown fleck texture and unfortunately gives it a dirty appearance from above. I can assure you it is anything but dirty - it is spotless, but they really need to address this.

All in Cliff Bay never disappoints. The clientele outside school holidays is slightly older but that's a Madeira thing. Anyway, my stiffening joints tell me I am probably now perfectly suited. We do go to other countries for odd breaks, usually Italy and Spain, but there is just something nice about Portugal and Madeira in particular that brings us back for "unwind" breaks.

Thank you for your feedback here at Tripadvisor. Very interesting to see so many “spot on” interpretations in your review so I can just take the liberty to fill in a few points.
1. Yes we are not an ”all action resort” but offer brilliant views, calm and excellent services and facilities.
2. There are many good restaurants and we are proud to have some of them in the hotel including the Michelin starred Il Gallo d’Oro.
3. We restock the minibar in accordance with the consumption and the reason for taking away tomato juice is actually due to the low consumption. Please advice on your next stay and we will naturally facilitate this for your holidays.
4. Manuel is a great and very valued employee at our hotel (Le Cliff Bar).
5. Our sea water pool area is a prime facility of the hotel. We intend to make further update and renovation of the blue lagoon pool area, to cancel some previous weather damages, during the early December 2012.
6. We are very fortunate to have many returning guests to our hotel and we do welcome all guests no matter age or nationality.
Hoping to see you soon again in Madeira so you can enjoy the pleasures of a beautiful balcony with view of the Atlantic Ocean.
With kindest regards,
Jan E. Ringertz

My wife and I have just had the most superb stay at The Cliff Bay. It is difficult to single out a particular service as overall one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. I was amazed how all the other guests were like minded and very considerate to each other, no noise or inconsiderate behaviour. The standard side view room we had was brilliant, extremely spacious and very comfortable. During our visit we were shown a superior room which we considered not to be as good. Within one week of returning home we have booked a return visit, this time with a room overlooking Funchal.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Funchal have a fantastic view of the bay and are sunny first thing in the morning
