“Best hotel ever!”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

I have now stayed at the Cliff Bay 5 times and am returning again in February. The hotel is large and spacious with lovely rooms. The staff are exceptional and will do anything to help you out. The facilities are superb and as I am getting older, I seem to expect far more!

The food is superb and the whole experience is such that you don't really want to leave the hotel. Madeira itself is very special and one of the most beautiful islands I have ever seen (and I come from Bermuda!). Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to have a view - it's which one you prefer. North facing, less sun and mountains...

We had a one week stay at this fabulous five star hotel at the end of July. We booked our holiday through Thomas Cook and opted to pay the extra for one of the rooms on the "high floors". It was definitely worth it! The views were fabulous, the soft drinks from the mini bar were free and the other little extras such as the "pillow menu" just made our holiday that bit more special. As many people have said the Rose Garden buffet breakfasts are fantastic - make yourself a Buck's Fizz as we did at 7am!!! We ate in the Rose Garden restaurant on 2 evenings - once from the A la Carte menu and then on our final night we chose the Buffet menu. We enjoyed both evenings and the Buffet was truly amazing! We ate out on 5 evenings sometimes walking into town (and getting a taxi back to avoid the hill!!) and we also ate in several of the local restaurants close to the hotel. The service and food were excellent in every restaurant. The hotel has the most beautiful
grounds and there are always plenty of loungers by each of the pools or down by the sea. The staff are always very helpful and as others have mentioned in their reviews, we were given a voucher for free drinks at the bar on arrival as our room wasn't ready. We absolutely loved this hotel and are already planning our trip back to Madeira next year.

We went to this hotel for a short a4day break , and found the whole experience excellent . We booked a garden view room and found this to be excellent with views across the bays to the sea port . The beds were Superb and the room location on the ground floor just right . The facilities in the hotel were excellent , pools sun beds and restaurants very good , staff were courteous and helpful othe than at the pool areas where no one was available to help set up umbrellas or beds and saw no one offering drinks etc .( you had to go inside and order which was no big deal ).

Room Tip: Don't waste money on upper level rooms as garden rooms are great use the money to visit the many...

Stayed but one short week in this lovely hotel and indeed city. Staff were extremely courteous and polite. Nothing was too much. Rooms were spotless. The food was delicious. A feast quite simply for both the eyes and the senses. The location was ideal. The services the hotel provides are excellent with the pool areas well supervised by hotel staff and lifeguards and hygiene again was faultless. The reception staff were very friendly and professional and went to enhance our very enjoyable stay. We were loathe to leave after our week but we are already planning our return visit!

Our first visit to Maderia and we found the hotel was an excellent choice for a relaxing holiday. It is well situated for a walk to a wide selection of eating places if you only stay bed & breakfast. The terrain in Maderia is very hilly so bear that in mind if you have people in your party who are less able. The walk into Funchal is pleasant and takes around half an hour but coming back is mostly uphill. There is a courtesy bus from the hotel into Funchal, local buses and a big row of taxi's in the town, so transport is easy enough although we chose to walk. The pool area in the hotel is lovely and relaxing with very helpful staff who set up your chosen beds and position your sun shades, which was a nice touch. Plenty of beds and access into the sea from a jetty with a lifeguard present.
We only ate in the main buffet restaurant which was typical in many ways to other similar hotels, although the atmosphere was calm and relaxed, not like a noisy canteen which we've experienced before. Themed food nights present some variation and the catering staff are very attentive ensuring items are refilled and well presented.
We went with Thomas Cook and booked two excursions, which are also advertised locally. We did a one day tour of the west of the island and the half day Nuns Valley. Both are worthwhile trips with stunning scenery and we also did the cable car trip from the old town in Funchal. Evenings in the hotel and locally are mostly live music (singers, jazz, local groups), eating & drinking. It's not a rowdy area with clubs and pubs, but is more relaxed which we prefer. Overall a lovely hotel which we would definitely use again when we return to Maderia in the future.

As this is only our second visit so feel overshadowed by the multiple returnees commenting. Return visitors are treated well with free drink, fruit, water, flowers etc. As our last visit everything was great with the vast majority of staff doing a fantastic job. Pool service was excellent. A lifeguard on duty for sea swimming is a plus.
Our only eating experience was breakfast as there is a fantastic choice of eating places.
We are almost certainly going to return.
