“Madeiran marvellous memories”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

We have been going to Madeira since 2003 but this was our first stat at The Cliff Bay. What a delightful experience and such a good choice.
Last year we looked in for lunch and were attracted by what we experienced, recommended it to friends who stayed there earlier this year giving us rave reviews. Therefore we extended our stay on the island for a further five nights bed and breakfast at The Cliff Bay.
Everything about this hotel is impressive.
On arrival you are welcomed by the doorman and your suitcases disappear only to reappear in your room. Reception staff are exceptionally efficient and helpful and our room, 606, had that wow factor you rarely get on entering a hotel room because the view from the wall to wall glass doors in the spacious and beautifully furnished space was so spectacular.
All fixtures, fittings , towels, robes and bedding are of high quality, room service every day, free wi if throughout the hotel, exceptional service wherever you go and food that is of the best . To make the outside dining in this paradise even more enjoyable the hotel had an eagle which watches over the cliff and garden that is the dining area so that gulls and pigeons do not trouble you, a rare sight to see an eagle in flight so close up if you venture to speak to its keeper.
This hotel is a must, check out holiday companies that do package holidays here as other guests told us of some great deals to be had.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view with morning sun

We stayed at the Cliff Bay for a week in a junior suite with a sea view (508). We used the pre-check-in service on their website which considerably shortened the process on arrival. We arrived early but our room was available and check-in was very efficient. We were shown to our room by two very polite members of staff and our cases followed very shortly afterwards. We noticed a broken drawer which I was about to report when a maintenance man appeared to fix it. The cleaner had noticed and already put the wheels in motion - this is the first time ever this has happened to us and it is really nice to stay in a hotel with such an attention to detail.

The whole hotel is run very efficiently, every member of staff we encountered was courteous, well presented and professional. Breakfast in the Rose Garden was very substantial and again the staff made the experience effortless for the guests. During the day there were always sunbeds available and staff were attentive whenever we needed them. The Blue Lagoon and Le Cliff Bar/Bistro had some lovely meals/snacks for all times of day. We ate in the Rose Garden buffet one night which was very nice. We didn't eat in the Michelin Starred Il Gallo D Oro as we prefer casual to formal dining.

The room was cleaned thoroughly every morning and turn down was done every night without fail. On check-in we were given a lovely bottle of red wine and on the second day we returned to the room to find a chilled bottle of white wine left for us - all compliments of the hotel. Check-out was very professional and efficient, our bags were collected and deposited in our taxi for us with no fuss. There was also the option to verify and settle the bill the night before, allowing an express check-out the following day.

All in all this is one of the best hotels we've stayed in and 100% worthy of its five star rating. I would recommend a stay here for anyone as this hotel does cater to all age groups.

Room Tip: Its worth the extra money for a sea view, rooms ending in 01 to 08 have a sea view and a view of Fun...

Thank you for your very kind feedback. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay with us. Our new pre-check in facility on our web site is a much appreciated feature to further speed up service upon check-in. It is good that you found our services and facilities to your liking and consider us one of the best hotels you have stayed in.
I hope to see you soon again.

I booked this hotel on the strength of the reviews I had read and I am so glad I did. It was indeed a place of tranquility. Again because of the reviews I decided to book a superior room with sea views and it was well worth the extra money. All the staff are very nice. No one goes past without greeting you. The service is exceptional without being intrusive. The swimming pools are lovely and there are plenty sun beds. In fact we often had the swimming pool to ourselves. There is an excellent choice for breakfast and the food is very nice. We did eat once at the Michelin star restaurant and this was indeed a treat. We don't generally go back to the same place for a holiday but we would make an exception for the Cliff Bay. One of our best holidays.

Have stayed here often but not since 2008. Many of the staff are still there which is a good sign. The prestige package brings many benefits, airport taxis, afternoon teas, spa discounts, dinner in the Michelin starred restaurant etc. Many of the guests are regulars and of a certain vintage. Whilst we are both retired, it did feel a bit like a Derby and Joan club at times and it was good to escape to the many good restaurants within easy reach. Try the Casa Portuguesa in the Old Town, Villa Cipriani and Tokos. The hotel itself is very good, helpful staff, beautiful flowers, comfortable rooms and fabulous position on the cliff. We had a late afternoon flight and despite being Prestige Gold members they couldn't accommodate a late checkout. Told that the hotel was 100% full? Unlikely!

The Cliff Bay mirrors Madeira in that I would say it is not really for the young and youthful. It is demure, peaceful and the amenities are first-class. What it lacks in dynamic, and probably quite deliberately, it makes up for in terms of tranquillity. My wife and I holidayed here with our 17 year old son (our 20 year old no longer wants to join us) so he took Scuba lessons at the hotel (and then the nearby dive centre) and is now fully qualified to dive unassisted. He swam and swam and swan some more. From the Michelin star restaurant to the saxophonist playing in the gardens, The Cliff Bay is something of an oasis, not least if your day-to-day is somewhat hectic. The highlight for me personally was the sumptuous breakfast amid a wonderful setting. I am not one for returning to places once visited but I would make an exception for The Cliff Bay

Spent a lovely holiday as usual at this great hotel. As somebody said to me there are many fine hotels in Madeira but then there is The Cliff Bay.The standard is getting better it seems to me anytime i go there.Facilities Staff rooms food of the highest standard. It is nice to be greeted on arrival by staff who know you friendly and pleased to see you.I have said it all before this hotel is excellent. It is hard to pick out members of staff for praise as the standard of them all is very high. But i will mention just three the young lady in Rose Garden in charge of outdoor evening meals Clara in reception and Paula in the Rose Garden. All going well go back in November and just booked today for 2 weeks in June next year. Cant say more about how good this hotel is.

Once again spent our Madeira vacation at The Cliff Bay, this time for 2 weeks. Lovely room with views over the gardens and headland/sea to the west so we have had the afternoon sun. The hotel continues to look for little improvements and this year the sunbathing decks have been expanded at sea level together with a second jacuzzi. A nice touch was a special "Atlantic experience" seafood dinner organised right at sea level - wonderful food and live entertainment - but dependent on the weather. Although it has been windy recently we were lucky on this occasion. Minor niggle - the piped music at mealtimes seems to have changed from previous years and was not always to our taste - small point but worth noting when everything else is spot on.
