Firstly the good points...lovely hotel, great facilities, attentive staff and attention to detail is very good in most areas. Food in the Rose Garden restaurant, buffet style included in half board was good, varied and always plenty of choice, but make sure you try the Gallo restaurant it is superb and without doubt worthy of the michelin star, remember gentlemen take a tie/jacket for this restaurant.
Swimming pools good together with the well furnished terraces, plenty for everyone, although even though the sign sayS do not reserve beds, obviously people did early in the morning.
Unfortunately I have to also mention a couple of negative points, the cost of a bottle of wine is horrendous! wine on offer in the restaurant, from portugal, priced at 23 euros per bottle (cheapest) which sells in the supermarket for 4.25 euros, thats over 500% mark up and totally unnecessary. It was possible to purchase a wine deal which did reduce the wine by approx 20% but even so still totally unacceptable mark up. The drinks in the bar are also high end.
Also I booked half board in england, big mistake, cheaper to pay at the hotel, but actually the breakfasts are good and there are plenty of eating places around about so it is possible to eat out of the hotel a lot cheaper if needed.
The bathroom shower gels were of low quality also, a bit unusual for a 5 star hotel to supply cheap products.
Overall...I would recommend this hotel for the comfort and facilities, staff and cleanliness, NOTE TO MANAGEMENT - REDUCE YOUR MARK UP ON THE WINES, THEY ARE LOCAL WINES AND A 500% MARK UP IS GREEDY!!!

Thank you for sharing your travel feedback here at Tripadvisor. I am delighted to learn that you enjoyed your recent stay at our hotel and that you enjoyed both our Rose Garden Restaurant and Il Gallo d’Oro.
When opting for staying in a five star hotel there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Service levels are higher, quality in general is higher, staffing levels are higher but also therefore many times prices are higher. Prices in five star hotels are for obvious reasons different than what you do find in supermarkets and we do not carry many product references that you do find in Supermarkets. The Cliff Bay cater and stock more than 150 unique references of wines and employ sommeliers. Our pricing does not differ from what you do find in other five star hotels and in a European comparison must even be considered as most competitive.
When purchasing half board in England you pay in Sterling and due to the recent and large difference in exchange rates as well as distribution costs the tour operator half board rates are more exposed. It should normally not be cheaper to purchase locally.
I am afraid that I do not agree that we use shower gel of low quality. The Cliff Bay has its own personalized range of products that are most appreciated by our guests and do not differ from ranges used by many upscale worldwide hotel groups.
Yours Sincererly,

First time on Madeira and hit the Jackpot with the Cliff bay. Superb location and excellent food. The Gallo D'or deserves its Michelin Star and staff care about your stay. I am fortunate to have stayed at some excellent Hotels over the years, Chateau Whistler, Ritz Carlton Cancun, Rotana Dubai so do not give praise lightly. Thank you Cliff Bay we will be back.

This was our first visit to Madeira, and having researched hotel reviews on Tripadvisor chose the Cliff Bay. What a good decision!

I can only agree with previous reviews - the hotel and its staff are really excellent. We booked a superior room on the 8th floor which was very well furnished, had an excellent bathroom, and had magnificent views of the Atlantic. A real advantage of staying in one of the upper floor rooms is being able to take breakfast in the Il Gallo D'Orro restaurant. An excellent choice of buffet and waiter service, no queues for food and a very relaxing atmosphere - a good start to the day!

Food in the Rose Garden restaurant was good and varied for a buffet restaurant, and service was good, efficient and friendly. We dined twice in the Il Gallo D'Orro Michelin starred restaurant, including the Saturday Dinner Dance, and thoroughly enjoyed the food, service and ambience.

We also had lunch most days at the Blue Lagoon restaurant, located by the ocean and the sea level swimming pool. The food was varied, well cooked and once again the service was excellent.

The Spa facilities at the hotel are truly excellent and my wife and I had several treatments during our stay.

We have stayed in many good hotels throughout the world, and the Cliff Bay is amongst the best. We look forward to another visit in the near future, when we intend to stay for a couple of weeks enabling us to not only enjoy the hotel but also to see a little of the beautiful island of Madeira.

We visited last year for our wedding anniversary. This was our fourth stay. We value the taxi transfers they make the journey stress free. The only disappointment was the weather, but your can't blame the management for that. The indoor/outdoor pool makes it possible to swim in all weathers. A very nice place to return to, and we will

For anyone wanting to have some peace and simply relax this is a lovely hotel. The setting is wonderful over looking the sea, the pool area is spacious and the staff attentive and very helpful. Generally the hotel is a very high standard and all the staff are great, always with a smile on their faces. Younger, 20-30 may find the entertainment in the hotel a little old for them but Funchal is so close it really doesn't matter. Can only say good things about the hotel, facilities, staff, rooms, food, one of the best we have stayed in for all round excellent qualities.

When I entered the hotel, I thought wow. I had never been to such a beautiful hotel before and I immediately fell in love. The same happened when I walked into my room. I thought this can't be possible, it was amazing. I loved the view from my balcony every morning I could see the sun rise over the ocean.
The service was great too, the staff was very nice.
The best was the view from my balcony, to see the ocean glimmer in the morning sunlight, just amazing.
And there was simply nothing to not like. I loved the trip, and the hotel was just great.

We have just returned from only our second visit to this wonderful hotel. We hope to increase this number over the next few years.

As before everything about the hotel was first-rate: the staff, rooms, public rooms, food, gardens and leisure facilities. We even had Portuguese lessons.

You would find it difficult to find anything to grumble about, except that your stay was not longer enough!!!!
