“Elegance, Tranquility, Beautifully decorated, Spectacular location.”
Reviewed 31 October 2010

My husband and I recently travelled here following TA reviewers for relaxation and service in luxurious surroundings. It was our first time in Madeira.
Indeed, most of Cliff Bay is awesome - hotel, staff, grounds, location - within walking distance of Funchal, with breathtaking views over the city, the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Direct access to the ocean. Shops and restaurants nearby, bus station up in front of the hotel.
It is a 16 years old hotel but looks like brand new. One of the most beautiful hotels I saw in Funchal and the most photographed from the trip boats everyday. The plant life is beautiful to look at and does not obstruct too much the sea view. Main and ground level lobbies are beautifully decorated with statuettes, paintings, vases, floral arrangements, carpets and a globe fountain.
Check in/Check out : (Very) good. Upon arrival, around 10:30am, they met us with professionalism and told us we were too early for check in, our designated room being still occupied. We were nevertheless allowed to use the grounds, spa, pools, bars. At 2 pm we asked if the room was ready and it was (they had not phoned us, as some other resorts do). The room was splendid so we did pardon the waiting. Check out was quick, at 11am, and again we used the hotel’s facilities for the next 5 hours.
But - 1. Front desk staff is a little solemn and stiff. They don’t pay attention to people, unless you ask something. Maybe this is not a bad thing. The management is, indeed, very aware of your presence everywhere in and around the hotel, they are available for whatever your need or query. Like Lina Jardim.
2. Prior to check out and upon returning from pool, at 10:30am we found that we had been locked out of our room, with the key card not operating. We had to go to the reception to get it re-authorized. They said it might have been deactivated by the cell phone…
Rooms : Very nice. Large, clean, long side of the rooms is totally windowed. Most of them have great exposure to ocean or harbor views.
The view from our balcony was picture perfect, Funchal and Ocean. My morning entertainment was watching the garden sprinkler systems watering at 7am, boats and cruisers coming in and out of the harbour and gull flocks at the back of fishing boats.
Large room, sitting area, wide flat-screen TV. 3 movies/day at fixed hours, but not until I called the reception one night, after 45min. waiting. DVD player, electric kettle, safe box, minibar, A/C-very silent and efficient, Wi-Fi. Large beds, good mattress and pillows. The marble bathroom had a double sink, tub, shower cabin and separate toilet with bidet. Magnifying mirror, hair-dryer. Soap (best toiletry they have), shampoo, shower gel and body milk. Bath robes, slippers. And (many) different-sized towels. large wardrobe and drawer cabinet.
But – 1.Slippers got dirty after a week and were not changed in 10 days. I saw too many people coming from spa to elevators wearing dirty slippers.
2. Few toiletries, and of not so good quality, no hair conditioner.
3. Bath robes one size, too small for strong-built and fit people.
4. Some people hang their clothes outside on the balcony wall. This is an eyesore.
We also had the opportunity to see two other room types, a top suite (elegant and multifunctional), and another room with different furniture, both facing west and sun-flooded and hot in the afternoon.
Spa : Very good. Pool, reflexology, back massage, face treatment… On the (2) days it did rain, we spent our afternoons in the Spa area, a bit small but very accommodating - nice loungers, snack bar (Cactus Bar), gift shop, shower, dressing, lockers area with candles, fragrance and relaxing music. You can even have a massage outdoors, at the edge of the cliff overlooking ocean and Funchal!
In Spa there is a pool with freshwater, half indoors. Pool gym sessions take place in this pool, 2 times/week led by a gifted (and funny, this is important!) trainer who does also Pilates 1 time/week!!! Incredible for a 5* hotel and spa, it should have been everyday gym and at least 2 times/week Pilates. So, in my 10-day stay I had 2 pool gym sessions (Tuesday and Friday) and 1 Pilates (Thursday). All Porto Bay Madeira have one and the same trainer.
Second pool - seawater, at ocean level with a separate section for kids. a large sun terrace area with another snack bar. In fact the spectacular architecture offers multilevel terraces with sunloungers and awesome panoramic view over Funchal and the mountains, ocean and coast line in the west. Three types of loungers, better in Spa and upper terrace, and one, very good, type of umbrellas. Perfect pool towel policy allows you to have as many towels as you need.
Seawater pool staff – Very good overall, spot-on, 2 times - lazy.
Restaurants : Very good. Main buffet/a la carte restaurant is Rose Garden. At dinner it has smart casual dress code but being elegant and on table reservation system, most of the people came in dining dress and nice-aged ladies had jewelry to accent their ensemble. Lovely! And so appropriate for the other restaurant, one storey up, Il Gallo d’Oro, Cliff Bay’s pride.
The Blue Lagoon is the poolside restaurant for lunch mainly, with good choice of salat-bar and tasty meats and fish, fresh pinapple juice-which is not no be served at Rose Garden, unfortunately.
Le Cliff Bar-Le Bistro is the main bar with live entertainment every night and the place for afternoon tea (they have a different tea, not the usual/immortal Tetley from the buffet breakfast)
Fitness center/Gym : (Very) Good. Cardio-vascular and strength equipment. Nothing for leg press. Very good : water dispenser and fresh tissue box.
Diving centre. Tennis court. And game room.
Not much entertainment. Every night a band is playing live music, mostly the usual hits from the 60’s-70’s. I liked the saxophone night, good player and nice music.
Staff (not front desk): Very good. As they pretend to be one of a kind. They try to accommodate anything that you need them to accommodate. One morning I asked the restaurant manager on duty why don’t they have blue cheese and we had it right at dinner. Hmm, not bad! And some other food requests were immediately fulfilled.
Food : (Very) Good. British were delighted, kept thanking every night for the wonderful, marvelous, excellent…! Even my husband loved it! Deep-fried “goodies” fast food type at breakfast - sausages, mini potato cakes, bacon strips, tomato slices, or watery scrambled eggs, beans, porridge. Same layout everyday, no change, no surprise, not to mislead people… And yes, they have sparkling wine, mineral water, fresh vegetables and fruits, cereals, eggs to order, dairy, charcuterie, pastry….same everyday, for 10 days ! For dinner - fish and seafood (great quality), meat, fresh and cooked vegetables, cakes…. Pretty much everything. But I had high expectations for the restaurant and I also wanted soy/rice milk, high-fiber (rye) bread, brown rice, more nuts, not so creamy soups, wider variety of (lightly) cooked vegetables, better tea or at least a tea box to choose from, and chocolate cakes enough for everybody. With Mr. Benoit as chef, I was expecting at least crêpes, not pancakes! But I loved La crème caramel and Umm’Ali hot dessert.
Each dinner has a different theme, and Sundays, at Portuguese dinner, a live performance with Madeira folklore is presented in the Rose Garden Restaurant.
Courtesy bus - A big bus makes several transfers daily going from Villa Porto Mare to Cliff Bay and then to Funchal, so you have to book your seats at front desk. The last run from Funchal is a little early, 5:40pm.
A vast number of the holidaymakers in this beautiful hotel are mature couples, who come here for a nice relaxing time, swimming, sunbathing, body treatment. The juniors are working out in the morning in gym, the seniors are swimming at 6am in the freshwater heated pool.
We had a newcomers’ cocktail evening, which apparently is held every Thursday evening - a nice way for us to meet the managers and other fellow tourists and a great way for the hotel to know our expectations and perception of the hotel.
And this is a very good hotel. I must say we had a wonderful holiday. Highly recommended.

Thank you for taking your time and giving us such useful feedback. I am pleased to learn that you enjoyed our hotel being first comers and that you found the hotel awesome. It is also a pleasure that you felt that despite the hotel being 16 years old hotel, it still looks brand new.
I have taken careful note of your comments and suggestions and hope that we will be able to further improve our property for future stays. It is with much pride that as late as last week we received the overall winner award by Thomson a la Carte.
I hope of the pleasure of welcoming you back to Madeira again.

I really enjoyed staying at the The Cliff Bay Hotel, and all things considered it does warrant its 5 star rating. The location is good, but perhaps a little further out from town than ideal. It can easily be walked in 20 minutes, but coming back is uphill and when the sun is at full strength the bus is a better bet.

The rooms are a good size and of good quality. However, we did have to report a leaking air conditioner twice. Both times it was sorted very quickly, but obviously the first fix wasn't as food as it should have been, and we were left with a wet carpet. This was however a minor niggle in the whole scheme of things.

The facilities are excellent. Both pools are very nice and the hotel garden excellent. It is always easy to find a secluded spot.

The main restaurant (The Rose Garden) has great service and the food is very nicely done. There is also a Michelin stared restaurant at the hotel, but we never visited so cannot comment.

Al in all a good Hotel that I expect to visit again.

Have stayed three times in Cliff Bay, last time was with two small children. Comparing to the alternatives, I'd say that Cliff Bay is the best choice in Madeira for families with small childen. The surroundings and in particular the architecture do not have the same authentic feel as those of Reid's Palace, but the pools and children's facilities are much better. The very warm indoor/outdoor pool in particular is great, and the views are marvellous. Breakfast is also great, but the buffer dinner is boring. For dinner, try some of the good restaurants nearby like Villa Cipriani, Tokos and less expensive restaurants closer to the Lido area.

Thank you for your feedback. The Cliff Bay does not have many children but we do our best to cater excellence for all guests. We have good children facilities with the intent to have harmony for parents, children and fellow travelers. Our heated pool is a popular venue.
Hoping to welcome you back for a fourth stay with us.

Very good hotel with excellent, friendly staff.
The TV service in the room left much to be desired. BBC reception was obviously dependent on the number of sets logged on at any time. This is indicative of the effect of dividing the incoming signal many times, resulting in picture breakup. The solution to this is to fit an additional amplifier after the collection of the signal at the dish.
If you are going to offer the service it must be of an acceptable standard. If you cannot guarantee it don't offer it.
Beautiful setting for this hotel. Grounds well maintained with interesting layout of pools and bathing areas. Glass partition dividing the inner and outer pool very shabby. Needs a good clean or even replacment.

Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased to learn that you enjoyed our hotel, the staff and the services offered. The Cliff Bay receives its television channels through cable and we offer nearly 55 channels. As a valued additional service we recently were able to receive ITV, BBC1, BBC2 and various German channels through a parabolic antenna. Our geographic location however means that on occasion these channels are not as “sharp” as the ones that come through cable, but even so they are much appreciated. The latest addition is that we also have on request in our library a very popular Portuguese golf channel that cover many of the international events.
We do continuous maintenance of our hotel and facilities and have constant repairs and improvements scheduled. Upkeep of the properties is an area where Porto Bay put much importance regarding its hotels. The partition of the indoor/outdoor pool is actually acrylic and we do avoid the use of class in this movable piece so it will likely continue do differ slightly compared with the glass nearby. As soon as the occupancies allow further improvements will be made.
I hope to be able to welcome you back in a near future.

From the moment we arrived until we left we were always treated in a friendly but professional manner by the staff. Bedroom was spacious, very clean and well fitted. We had the benefit of a great view of the sea and Funchal to our left. Used the pool/loungers a few times and this facility was of a high standard. Breakfast, which is included in the room rate, was a buffet style with an extensive selection of food types available. If there was something you wanted that wasn't there you just had to ask. We ate
once in both their restaurants. The Rose Garden was again buffet style with various themes on offer during our 1 week stay. Food here was of good quality/choice but I would say a bit on the expensive side - around €100 for 2 with a bottle of wine. Il Gallo d'Oro is their Michelin star restaurant. Food, price and service here was of a standard you would expect in such a restaurant. We were unusual in the fact that this was our 1st visit to The Cliff Bay as most people we spoke to had stayed here on previous occasions!!

This was our first visit to Madeira and we chose the Cliff Bay because it had received good ratings on tripadvisor. We arrived at 12.30hrs and were greeted by smiling reception staff. We had tov wait a short while before our room was ready as check out time is 12.00hrs. However we were given free drinks whilst we waited. Our room was on the second floor overlooking Funchal Bay.
The room itself was large and well appointed. One small point: I think that there would be space for more drawer space. However its size compensated well for that. The balcony was large enough to be used and you could sit out properly on it. The veiw we had was divine; Funchal Bay slightly to our left and the rest taken up by open Atlantic Ocean
From our balcony there was a garden area about thirty feet wide and then a cliff. You could not have been much closer. As a result it was quiet with just lungfulls of Atlantic air to breath in.
The bathroom was large and well equiped with a double sink, a bath and separate large shower and loo, white fluffy dressing gowns and slippers, and polished floor tiles. All was neat and tidy. The ambiance was one of space to move around
The following day we received a welcoming talk by the holiday rep, Paula. She came across as friendly and interested and as stated that she lived on the island she was able to give more intimate knowledge of local amenities from her own experiences;very useful.
We were on a B&B basis and on this visit did not use the hotel restaurants. We ate out every night. The local retaurants around the general hotels area were of good quality and there was not one that we did not like. There are a range selling basically the same menus and a few more expensive ones. On visiting the old town in Funchal we think that these restaurants are on a par.
On walking around we did see many hotels and whilst they were probably luxurious in their own ways; most were four and five star rated, they appeared to us to be too contemporary. They were huge buildings. The Cliff Bay in compasison was smaller, more attractiveto look at and had an air of being more cosy and intimate.
All the staff that we encountered were freindly and would greet you with a smile. The reception staff would always say hello if they could. The staff at the lower pool were again polite and went around their business with calm efficiency.
I understand that many of the guests of The Cliff Bay are returns, and I can see why:
attractive hotel, friendly staff, smaller, more intimate, wonderful location.
The spa area is total relaxation and with bthe benefit of male and female only areas I think adds to it.
The hotel is near to Reids Palace, which we could see across the cliffs from our balcony. This hotel commands a position not unlike the Cliff Bay and looking around I think its only these two that do.
As mentioned, this was our first visit to Madeira and looking around can see why people return. Our experience of the Cliff Bay was one of relaxation. The hotel, although just off the main road was devoid of traffic noise. It appeared to run with an air of calmness potrayed through the staff and has made up our minds that we want to be those who return. You must visit this hotel. We will.

Thank you for your feedback. In Madeira most arrivals and departures come around lunch time for which check-in is only guaranteed from 14h00, especially when the hotel runs to full occupancy. You are so right regarding the views… and it is a nice description “lungfulls of Atlantic air”…
The objective of our hotel is to offer friendliness, calm, harmony always with highest quality. I am pleased that we seem to have managed this during your stay.
I very much look forward to be able to say “Welcome back to The Cliff Bay” on your next stay.

This was our 3rd visit to the Cliff Bay and once again we had a wonderful time. All the guests that we spoke to had been to the hotel several times before and all said that they would be retuning again ourselves included. This Hotel must be one of the best run hotels in the world, the staff are all dedicated people and do everything to make your stay a pleasant one, from the reception staff on arrival to the lovely staff at Le Cliff Bar/Le Bistro
where we went most evenings and also had lunch there, great for light meals,to the staff at The Rose Garden, the Breakfast selection here is superb have not had better anywhere, can even have a glass of champagne if you wished, lovely fresh fruit every morning, cooked breakfasts, continental style breakfast, lovely bread, cakes and freshly made pancakes you name it they have it all here.
There are lovely pool areas, and gardens and an excellent Spa.

There is a courtesy bus that takes you in to Funchal, which is very useful, walking down the hill is ok but its quite a trek coming back.

If you prefer to eat outside of the hotel there are many very good restaurants close by ,ie
The Cipriani,The Paradise which have a beautiful setting looking out on to the sea and only about 5 minutes from the hotel.

Obrigado to you all at the Cliff Bay for another holiday to remember,we will be back sometime in the near future.
