This was our first holiday for three years following an accident to my partner that left her disabled and in a wheelchair. It was a journey into unknown territory and the Hotel Porto Mar (part of the Suite Eden Mar) did not disappoint us.

The hotel has rooms for disabled customers with large bathrooms and a shower for the disabled; our room was very spacious overlooking the beautiful tropical gardens and swimming pool. Use of the outdoor pools will be dependant on the level of disability and unfortunately it was not possible to use the heated indoor pools.

The standard of food was very good with a full buffet and English breakfast available in the Restaurant Atlantida and available in the room if required. There are two other restaurants that offer 'a la carte' menus and I wouldn't hesitate recommending both the Restaurant Alfada and Med - the latter was simply first class.

The hotel gardens are simply beautiful with tropical plants, trees and the stunning 'Birds of Paradise'.

The whole complex is wheelchair accessible although you may have to take slightly longer routes.

The staff were incredible - nothing was too much and done with a genuine smile. They are hospitable, courteous and friendly.

The whole island is very hilly and not suitable for pushing wheelchairs long distances although the promenade in front of the hotel does not present a problem. We used taxis for three half day trips and would recommend a trip to the Nun's Valley, Sea Cliffs, and Camacha. Try the cable car down the cliff face (not recommended if you don't like heights) but the wheelchair fitted and off we went!! Not much to do at the bottom but well worth the 5 euros!!

The parts of the island we saw were simply stunning and full of colour with flowers, orchard groves and greenery.

We are returning next April/May and I suspect it will be an annual visit even though the landing approach to the airport can be a bit hairy depending on the local weather conditions - don't let this put you off!!

A lovely hotel on a lovely island.

Just got back last week of October from Madeira and had one of the best holidays ever.
Superb Island., lots to do from Taboganing down streets , cable car rides, scuba diving, whale watching, great people and stunning scenery (mountains).
Stayed at Eden Mar, would recommend hotle, Island and experience to anyone with a young family.
Beaches sparse but there are a couple although you will need a car.
We had 25degrees in late October and loved it.

Spent a weak at the 'Eden mar' last week in Sept. weather perfect, hotel perfect, Madeira stunning.
The first Hotel where they give you a conducted tour, and it was a very good idea. we went to give my Mother in law, who was post op, a chance of some sunshine to aid her recovery. not being able to walk to well, we were at first concerned she would find it hard going. but the hotel is on the level, and a short walk towards the sea gets you to the Lido, a lovely terraced area, with restaurant, cafe, and great views over the Lido out to sea.
the hotel is superb, the grounds are stunning, the pools fabulous, food delicious, rooms spacious and clean, staff cheerful and polite, location ideal.
From the moment you step into the Eden mar, you are looked after by the well trained staff, who seem tireless in their efforts to please you.
Outside take your pick of bars and restaurants, the Chinese, right outside the Hotel is great value, and fine food, with very attentive staff.
We will return to the Eden mar, because it is one of the best Hotels we have stayed at, and Madeira is a beautiful island, with friendly people. you must hire a car, and see all of the island. fantastic.
a special mention for two of the reception staff........Sophia and Manuela. hope I've spelt them right.

We spent 10 days at the Eden Mar, our first visit to Madeira. The hotel was all we could wish for, lovely spacious room with perfect view out across the promenade and to the ocean. We used bars and had breakfast in hotel, service and food excellent (we never needed to eat lunch!) and staff all smiling and very helpful. We enjoyed several meals on the balcony too, the local supermarkeyt had everything you need and of course freshfruit and veg ect from daily market in funchal The pool areas were lovely, kept spotlessly clean and tidy and the whole atnosphere was calm and relaxing, perfect after a long days walking. It is a walk into town - about 25 mins, but we found it no effort as the minor incline en by back was nothing compared to those we encoutered walking Lavadas! There are also plenty of buses that pass by the hotel going into Funchal day and night and along west coast, we used local transport for all our travelling out of town. We also enjoyed the walk along the promenade and recommend the sea bathing stations along the coast - great fun. We will return.

We stayed at the Eden Mar for our silver anniversary and received a lovely bottle of wine, flowers and a room upgrade.
The choice at breakfast was superb catering for everyone, and the staff very helpful and friendly. Only problem was that the best restaurants were in Funchal so we had to travel by bus which were often very crowded in the evenings.
We thought we would try the Irish bar as they advertised 'Live Music' which was great if you were 60yrs and over but not for us. The food was the worse I've every had, I ordered a chicken and spinche lasagne which had been put in the microwave (including garnish), I even found a chicken bone.
Entertainment was not to our taste, again nothing for our age group, older people loved it.
O' Jango in the old part of Funchal serves great food, infact most of the restaurants in this area are excellent.
We loved Madeira and will certainly visit again.
