Visited Vidamar in November for our wedding anniversary having obtained a good deal via Secret Escapes.

Having read previous reviews we did ask for higher floor room, which we got although it was near a plant room which certainly hummed a bit. However it did not affect our stay within the room. The service from the start was very good,( Nelson at reception for example) and very courteous. The room had a full sea view which was lovely. It was clean although I think requiring some TLC. The facilities in the room with a sitting area were nice to have together with the fridge. The colour scheme is a matter of choice but with such a stark colour of grey and white, it needs to be absolutely spotless and I felt that the paint work could do with brush up. The bathroom was clean (his and hers basins!) but the style did not seem to go with the aimed look of the room and probably again at the point of needing some work. The bed was very comfortable, the sheets were changed during our stay as were the towels as we required.

The buffet restaurant we thought was good and there was always plenty and a reasonable choice. We tried the Italian restaurant which was OK but we felt nothing special. We did not try the other restaurants. Breakfasts again were good, there was a good choice and the staff were always friendly and helpful at all meals.

The holiday was helped by having very nice weather on all but one day. We were so lucky! There was plenty of space on the sun terrace and it was fun to be able to get into the sea and snorkel. There were a few fish swimming around the man made reef. The swimming pools were spotless but very cold, the sea was warmer. However once in the pool and with a bit of swimming to warm up it was OK.

We had mentioned to the hotel that it was our anniversary and were surprised and touched to return on that day to find a cake and a bottle of sparkling wine with an iced message of congratulations on a plate, (it did say happy birthday but the thought was there!)

There were good facilities on offer which counts towards the star rating and there was always some form of entertainment in the bar area. It was a shame that more people did not go participate and perhaps the hotel could make more of an effort to encourage people to 'get together' to enjoy the 'action'! My personal feel is that the hotel needs to make at least the lobby area a little more intimate and welcoming as it is vast and a bit warehouse like. However with the architecture this may be difficult.

Really the only irritation of the holiday was something the hotel could not avoid. The sound of air conditioning plants of both this and nearby hotels did impact on my sleep. For some this would not be an issue. However it did mean that I was up to watch the liners go in and out of the harbour and watch the fishing boats and following ball of seagulls go by.

Although I have mentioned points which in my opinion could improve the customer experience we had a really nice holiday and the hotel helped to make it a good anniversary. We would stay again and if you can get a good deal, would recommend it as a good comfortable base for exploring Madeira

Room Tip: Rooms at higher level best for full view of sea.

A fabulous hotel in an exquisite location.
Sea view rooms brilliant. Staff are amazing.
Buffet meals top class.
We have traveled almost 30,000 miles during the last 18 months and this hotel is in the top two.
Unusually for us, we would return.
The town of Funchal has some great restaurants if you feel like a change and the taxi fare is around 4 Euros.
Go and do it!

Our first visit to Madeira and couldn't have chosen a better hotel. Spacious airy room with great sea view, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. We loved the buffet style restaurant and all the staff were very friendly and welcoming. It's a large modern complex which doesn't take long to find your way around but means you never feel cramped. Convenient position for getting into town either walking or on the bus.

We had a wonderful time. We noticed the great attention to details. We stayed in a superior see view room and were not disappointed. Special mention to the bedding. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. My wife had a little accident, they arranged taxi to hospital and back. A big thanks specially to Raphael - waiter we met during breakfast buffet - from for his genuine kindness and friendliness. Evening buffet is good but breakfast buffet is a must. Everything you should dream of for breakfast is here and more. Only thing we didn't like is that some waiters are overzealous and take your plate even before you have finish. And finally, the spa is very good with also indoor and outdoor sea water pools. Bottom line, if we come back to Madeira I will not stay anywhere else.

Other reviewers have said it before, this is a large hotel which can be difficult to find your way around, it has two towers and two sets of lifts, having found other lost souls in the corridors looking for their room numbers and only finding the lift to the sea platform after the 3rd try. Some good signs would not go amiss! The rooms are very good with large balconies and ocean views, bathrooms are spacious with marble fittings and mirrowed walls, some of the fittings are a little old fashioned and the toilet seat in my room was missing a few button rests, it should have been replaced.
The public areas are very antiseptic and cold, you would not want to sit on a black plastic/leather couch looking at a breezblock wall, all the decor is grey ,black and white, the velvet bar is black and very small for such a big hotel.
I did not try the dine around options but found the food at the breakfast buffet was fine. The evening buffett was poor for a 5* not much choice of main course and on the Brazillian themed evening the main meat course was a very dried up looking bean and mince stew.
I would not stay here again as I found the hotel too big cold and impersonal, the staff were pleasant as they are in most hotels in Madeira.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean views. I stayed in 343 which is the top floor overlooking the mini golf and garden very quiet
