“Overall good but bland food with little variation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014

Good hotel right on the Praia Formosa seafront, stayed here in June 2014. Rooms are very clean and reasonably well appointed for the money; beds are very comfortable. All public areas are cleans and well looked after (although the hotel could do with its own public internet access rather than relying on a router servicing the MEO Portuguese public internet system - holidaymakers using mobiles and tablets to make use of the internet were everywhere in reception and it is very heavily used).

The main beef is with the food. It is very plentiful, well cooked and beautifully arranged, but... a bit bland. Chicken, beef strips in the usual spicy sauce and sardines or scabbard fish where invariably on the menu - this is the only all-inclusive hotel in the Pestana chain so you would have thought that more effort would go into making the daily menu more interesting as its obviously heavily used by residents. As other reviews have noted the evening entertainment needs a lot of refreshment as it varies from wholly unentertaining to occasionally so. This area, and Reception, are too close to the restaurant although this bad design is something the hotel can do little about.

Would I stay here again? No - but I can't honestly say I had a bad time here. The staff are very friendly and helpful and arranging trips, and getting the free hotel bus into Funchal, were a doddle. But they do need to address the blandness and variety of the food on offer.

Myself and my husband have just returned from this hotel. We really enjoyed our stay, the food is good, the rooms are large and very clean. The public areas are very nice and well kept. The staff are all lovely and very friendly. We were first given a room on the lower groundfloor which we didn't like because you can't see the sea. I went straight back to reception and we were moved the next day to a room on the 2nd floor which was perfect. The first week we were there was really peaceful, no problems getting a sunbed ect. but suddenly the atmosphere changed when a large party of Polish guests arrived. It was a bit of a shock as there were queues at the bar. no sunbeds, it was very noisy everywhere, difficult to get on the courtesy bus. This didn't spoil our holiday but the first week was a lot nicer than the second, The staff were quite apologetic and did there best to cope.

Stayed at the Pestana Bay in February, we loved it, breakfast choices tended to be somewhat limited, but the evening entertainment was often hilarious, if a little tragic.
There's not a great deal to do in the hotel, the pool is great and the bar comes in handy, but if you're wanting to explore the island this is the perfect base. Secluded and far enough away from Funchal proper that you don't feel like you're staying near a city, and in a pretty good position for accessing most of the island.
Pestana provide a free shuttle service into Funchal from where you can get to just about everywhere else, it's close enough to Comoros De Lobos to warrant walking there.
Manuela was probably the best waitress I've ever met, she had so much energy, and my glass was never empty with her around.
Wifi could do with extending throughout the rooms, but by the end of the week I was getting used to escaping the internet in my room.
I will be back.

We stayed here during May 2014.
All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Good customer service.
When we arrived the room was not suitable so they changed our room next day.
Overall the staff made our stay a pleasant time.

We would like to bring to the attention of potential customers of a holiday company called hot deal holidays who we regretfully used to book our holiday.
We are very disappointed with them for following reasons and have lodged a complaint which is still not resolved.

2 days before we were due to travel they advised us that our original hotel 5* hotel was not available and they only offered us a downgrade to a 4* apart hotel which we think is unsuitable and not acceptable. We originally booked the holiday on 6th march and on 15th may they advised us of the booking problem which was made through an agency called medhotels. Hot deal holidays have advised us that medhotels will not make a refund for their error.

To conclude we are very unhappy customers of hotel deal holidays and their agent medhotels.

Room Tip: Higher floor has fab seaviews

We have just returned from this lovely hotel & have nothing but praise for everything we experienced there, we had a junior suite (110) which was to die for ! a huge lounge area with sofa & 2 armchairs, dining table with 4 chairs huge balcony & kitchen area with all facilities. then an equally large bedroom with a 6ft bed loads of wardrobe space & another lovely balcony overlooking the gardens & sea, the bathroom had 2 marble basins , a bath with shower over & toilet & bidet. you just wanted to relax in there all the time! I had mentioned by e-mail that it was our 30th wedding anniversary, & was greeted by a bottle of champayne the restaurant was spotlessly clean & the food very good, to be honest it was a bit repetitive, but I am a fussy eater so I think it was just me! my hubby was more than satisfied. the drinks were fine for us, as I only drink the local wine and my other half is well happy with the local beers, so cant comment on other drinks. the entertainment was average, but fine by us (60 plus age group) we did a couple of trips, the west island one was a long day, very nice but quite expensive, & beware, if you don't pay by cash the price is loaded by 5% by debit or credit card. the cable car is more than worth the price, as is the botanical gardens at the top. all in all the experience of madeira was lovely & I would defiantly recommend this hotel to go there

We enjoyed our one week break at the Pestana Bay. We had been to Funchal in September 2013 and returned this time as a last minute booking. Our intention was to have a quiet break without trips and catch up on some sun and reading. It worked out fine. The location of the hotel isn't perfect but you have the opportunity to walk in both directions along the promenade. The tunnel was open so no problems there. I understand the promenade is to be upgraded at some point. Hotel food was fine and the drinks availability on all inclusive was good.
Room was good and we found the kitchenette useful for making early morning tea.
All the rooms have a sea view and I would agree you need to try and get level 2 and above. I would suggest the hotel consider the view onto the restaurant roof as almost everyone looks over it. Perhaps worth some attention at some point.
Used the free bus service into Funchal on one occasion and it ran perfectly to time no problems.
Had one issue with shower on first night. I reported problem on way into dinner and it was fixed by the time we got back to the room.
All in all a good holiday and it was good value for money.

Room Tip: Floor 2 and above for a good view

Arrived home , yesterday, from staying a week at this hotel. Our room was on the first floor and had beautiful views of the well, kept garden and sea. There were some trees in front of us but they added to the view and did not completely hide the sea view. The hotel is spotless and rooms are cleaned every day. The food was really good and varied. I am a fussy eater but found something that I could eat and enjoy, every day. There was always a meat, fish and poultry dish on offer and several different deserts, including cakes, fruit and creamy deserts.
Too be honest I can not really fault this hotel. They are reasonably priced for what they have to offer and I certainly think that they deserve their four star rating. We are a couple in our early fifties who are young at heart but wanted a relaxing break. We did our research and knew what we wanted so I guess we didn't have any surprises. I suppose it depends on what you want, as to how you view this hotel. It is true that the majority of people staying at the hotel were probably in the 40-60 age group, but I think this hotel would suit people of any age who just wanted to have a relaxing break or do some sight seeing. The hotel is a good way from the centre of town, which is why we chose it but, there is a free bus that operates from 9am until 7. 30pm. The other thing I liked about this hotel is that they are doing their bit to reduce their carbon footprint, for example letting you choose when you want fresh linen and towels, instead of changing them daily for the sake of it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Pestana Bay Hotel and it helped to make our first visit to Madeira extra enjoyable. So Thank You to all the staff at the hotel. We had a warm welcome with a glass of Madeira wine, at the reception desk on our arrival and, were made to feel very happy and comfortable by all, during our stay.
