“A place to relax and unwind”
Reviewed 21 June 2010

We have lost count of how many times we have stayed in this complex over the years! We always rent a car as we enjoy visiting areas of the island at our leisure. We love being lulled to sleep by the ocean and really like having a kitchenette at our disposal. The rooms are spacious and homely. The staff always go out of their way to make our stay memorable. Nothing seems to be too much for the reception, cleaning and restaurant staff. We enjoy the sea view breakfast and the interaction with the friendly staff and other guests. We chill out in the Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and sauna. We have also swum in the sea, using rubber shoes that we purchased at the hotel. We prefer to eat at local restaurants where we enjoy lapas (limpets), Peixe espada (scabbard) bolo de caco (garlic butter bread) and espetada (meat on a spit).

My partner and I booked this hotel on a whim, and after reading a few of the reviews I was a bit concerned as to what we would find when we checked in.

I must say that we were both pleasantly surprised and both enjoyed our stay at the Pestana Bay. Yes, the hotel is located away from the centre of Funchal, but the complementary bus service was very punctual and if we did have to hire a taxi the cost was approx 8-9 euros, which isn't exactly a horrible amount! In fact, if you are after a quiet time just relaxing then I would say that the location could be a good thing.

The hotel seems to cater for the more, shall we say 'mature' clientèle, and both the food and entertainment seemed to reflect this. If you are after a party hotel then I recommend that you book elsewhere. This isn't a bad thing at all, but is just a point to be aware of when booking.

The food did look a bit repetitive, however, we were not fully inclusive so can't really say as to the quality of the dishes. We can recommend though the fish restaurant approx 10 minutes slow walk away (onto the beach from the back of the hotel, through the tunnel, up the steps and the restaurant is to your left next to the Italian... the scabbard fish there is excellent!)

The prices for food and drink in the hotel were a bit pricey (as are most hotel prices), but, as stated in some previous reviews, there are supermarkets nearby and it is not too difficult to eat out.

The staff were excellent, and the room (a junior suite, with kitchenette)was both clean and comfortable.

All in all, we had a very good experience. I would recommend this hotel if you are staying without children, and are after a quiet and relaxing time whilst still being able to enjoy what Madeira has to offer!

We realised what to expect of this hotel being vacation club owners at other Pestana Hotels. This visit was a late one week b&b package and our first time at this Hotel. The third floor studio had a very large comfortable bed for three. The apartment was showing signs of the need for some refurnishment but was clean and cleaned daily. The breakfast selection was wide and varied with the hot choice being of resonable quality -- however -- patience was needed at the toaster.
The sound of the sea over the stone beach could be a problem for some but unfortunatly a larger problem at the time of our visit was a sickness bug from which the reviewer also succumbed to -- this I hasten to add was an Island problem and not just this hotel and did not appear to be food related.
While I would rate this hotel three not four stars it still gives good value for money.

When we stayed at the Pestano Bay Hotel we were all inclusive. We found the food to be very monotonous. The rooms were basic. The beds and pillows very hard and uncomfortable. Ours was badly ripped underneath. Entertainment very poor. All inclusive bar very poor. At the time we stayed there the tunnel was closed and we felt marooned and reliant on shuttle bus. If you wished to return for lunch the ll.3Oam bus had to be taken back. Not worth going out for. But there again nothing to stay around for either. No in hotel entertainments etc., during the day. During our stay the local bus changed and two buses were required to take you down to the hotel area. Taxi is 10 euros from Funchal. The surrounding area of the hotel was likened to Beirut and if development does go ahead will be a building site for quite some time. Even though the evenings were balmy there was nowhere to walk outside. No decent bars or restaurants to get to with the tunnel being closed and the promenade ripped up by storms. I know the hotel cannot help the weather but the shuttle bus should have continued throughout the day and a charge should not have been made for the lift to the hotel above. All in all a very disappointing holiday.

The hotel is somewhat isolated but has a half-hourly courtesy bus into the capital,Funchal. The journey takes 15 minutes.Guests tend to be more mature couples which gives the hotel a quiet and dignified atmosphere. We visited outside school holiday times so cannot comment on what it would be like during those periods.Drinks bought in the hotel tended to be expensive but the rooms have a fridge and there is a large supermarket 5 minutes walk away selling very cheap drink. There are plenty of good restaurants within easy walking distance.A good hotel in which to reelax in a refined atmosphere.

Just returned from a week at the Pestana Hotel, after reading some of the reviews we were not that impressed, but the truth is it was a fantastic holiday. The cleanliness was first class, sheets and pillow cases changed every day, room spotless. The food was execellent and plenty of it. No need to be there at the crack of dawn, as it never run out. Ample sun beds, no towels placed on them by you know who. The sea can be a bit loud, as all the rooms have a sea balcony. The free bus into Funchal always had seats.
