Pestana Casino Park
Ranked #35 of 88 Hotels in Funchal
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 February 2013

We go back to the Casino Park, year after year. We just returned from a 7 day stay during the carnival week, having first stayed at the hotel in 1981, during our honeymoon. The staff are courteous and very helpful. Open spaces and great views. Good facilities, apart form the WiFi, completely unreliable, probably a blessing in disguise according to my husband. My other small complain is relevant to the showers, they are so weak, surely Pestana can invest on some decent showers heads.. Also it is beyond my understanding for an island which offers so much variety of fruit, the quality and fruit offered at breakfast leaves a lot to be desired. Despite my criticism it is still the friendliest 5 * hotel in the island.

Room Tip: choose rooms facing Funchal Bay

A most enjoyable stay, friendly and helpful staff, wonderful indoor pool (outdoor pool looked good but too cold to use during our stay!), good fitness centre with sauna and steam room.
Breakfasts were excellent with lots of choice. Excellent location with easy walk into Funchal.
We would recommend rooms with a garden view (overlooking Funchal and the harbour) rather than sea view. However, this side of the hotel faces east and so only gets early morning sun. Opt for rooms away from the road.
The hotel is enormous, built in an iconic 'brutal concrete' style with large public areas. It is very much a '1970's' building and this is where the problem lies - the rooms are small, the bathrooms lack space and the 'in bath' shower would be too tight for anyone who is more than an average size!
Despite the comments about the room we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return.

Room Tip: Room with garden view, away from road (see comments).

We stayed for 7 nights in this 5 star hotel and had a wonderful time. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left the hotel staff could not do enough for us.The bedrooms probably need a little updating but the general state of the hotel is very good.
We found the breakfasts excellent with a wide choice of hat and cold menu.
Location wise... very good ,ideal for walking into the old town and good views of the surrounding area and local gardens.

Room Tip: No double beds .... twin beds only. All rooms a little noisy when the casino shuts at 0400hrs on a...

We love visiting the Casino Park hotel & always receive the best of welcomes from the Manager to the bell boy/porters.
The design & layout are exceptional & breakfast overlooking the pool is a delight.
The location is great for walking into Funchal & the views from the gardens over the Funchal Bay are simply the best.
Value for money too is hard to beat anywhere.
See you again in May.

I think this is rated as 5 star because of the spa and indoor pool but it seems to be living on past merits. The hotel is imposing and can be seen from miles away due to its distinct shape and position above the harbour. The reception, bars and restaurants are in good shape but the rooms need some TLC. Walls are scuffed and woodwork is chipped and worn. Balcony furniture is particularly shabby. Pool area is concrete and some of it is worn away and very rough so no footwear in the area is not a good idea. Bedding is crisp and white and beds are comfortable but towels are uniformly thin and threadbare when you would expect nice fluffy ones just as you would from any 5 star hotel in the UK. Big bugbear with the Brits is that there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room; apparantly you can hire these but why should you have to hire them in a 5 star hotel. Minibar/fridge is provided but there is a notice requesting that you do not put any of your own items in the fridge. We ignored this and kept juice and water in the fridge and there was no comeback so why not go for it.
Breakfast buffet provided a good variery of hot and cold food with fruit juices, cereals, fresh fruit, salads, cold meats and cheeses, yoghurts, bakery items, bacon, eggs in various formats, sausages, hot tomatoes, beans, pancakes and potoatoes. There was also porridge on offer. Yes, tea and coffe are provided via a machine but if you ask one of the waiting staff they will happily bring you a pot of coffee, hot water, hot milk etc or hot water and tea bags to make your own tea. There are also glasses of an Asti spumante type drink on offer at breakfast so you can indulge in that if you want to.
We did not eat in the restaurant at lunch or dinner but the lunch buffet did look and smell good. Sandwiches in the bar were fine but 3.30 Euro for a tea or coffe that you can get in the seafront cafes for 1 Euro is a bit much.
Pool is small for the size of hotel; don't know how crowded it would be in the summer months.
View from the pool and restaurants is superb, looking over the harbour where the cruise liners dock and towards the town perched on the very steep hillside.
Try to get add odd numbered room as they look towards the town and you get a side sea view too, so no real need to pay for a sea view.
Staff were all very pleasant and helpful and unobtrusive.
Funchal, in general, is very much frequented by the older generation so don't expect much of a nighlife. There is a Casino next to this hotel but we didn't try it out.
Local buses run from near the hotel to the town and the Lido area. You can buy multiuse tickets from shops which show 'Pay Point' sign (may be able to get them from the hotel) and these are cheaper than paying for each time you use the bus.
We went with a Thomson excursion to the West of the Island and this was good value. A full day trip with an excellent lunch. I would recommend it.
Overall a good week's break at a reasonable price via Thomson.

Room Tip: Odd numbered rooms with numbers less than 23 are closer to the sea and give a sea view as well as th...

Your constructive comments have already been shared with our management team and we promise to focus on improving them.
We do charge for coffee & tea making facilities, which in some hotel are for free, but we still have the best value for money in the island for your accommodation as we only charge extras if you consume.

Ok where do I start. Is this a 5 star hotel? well on balance I think not. It has got all the facilities of a5star ie spa, indoor pool etc but it lacks that extra bit that makes the difference between excellent and just ok and it was just ok. The staff are all without exception charming and helpfull but where it really falls down is in the food department. It is just not 5 star standard, breakfast is ok with a good selectionf fruits, cerial, cakes and breads and the cooked is also plentifull and a decent selection. however, dinner is just not up to 5 star stadard , no waiter service which you would expect in a 5 star hotel. The food was reasonable quality but very repetitious you could almost predict what would be on the menu each evening, two types of fish in a sauce a type of meat in a sauce a not very good selection of vegetables, however I would say the salad selection is fine.So why has it got 5 stars, without seeing other equivelent hotels in the area it is difficult to say, maybe some of the others should be 6 stars, but what it has got going for it is the location just a 10 minute walk into town and superb views. Would I stay here again, maybe, because it is very good value for money and it is not scruffy or dirty or a place that you would not step foot into again it is just not 5 star. Sorry Casino Park

I must admit I wasn't expecting too much from the hotel. When we arrived I wasn't enamoured with the concrete exterior and thought the room was okay but perhaps in need of a revamp. So those are the negatives out of the way.

On the plus side found the staff very helpful. I thought I had lost my camera so plagued the concierge with several calls about where they had to call to find it, i.e. the taxi, the restaurant, etc., etc. They were good natured about it. Found the staff helpful. We would go out for dinner in the evening and it was pleasant to get back to the hotel to find there was a musician each night (during the week) and couples dancing. Thought that was pleasant. Also there were some good movie channels in the room, subtitled as opposed to dubbed. Smashing view of the sea and the mountain from the balcony. Breakfast was varied and lovely view from the conservatory. Enjoyed it.
