I stayed at Pestana Casino Park Hotel for 3 days. I went with 3 colleagues, but I enjoyed the hotel like everyone else would do. Time for relaxing, swimming and visiting points of interest on the island. Breakfast is very tasty and you can choose from a variety of fruits, breads, salades and sweet cakes. The outside pool is not heated, but was ok to swim when the temperature outside was above 20 degrees and sunny. I also used the fitness one time, there are some cardio equipments and, a rack with dumbells (max. 10kg) and a small (incline) bench. I love the spa on the -2th floor. The indoor pool is heated and very peaceful. You can always enjoy the bubbles in the pool to relax and massage. There is also a sauna and Turkish sauna with aroma smell. After that you can take a shower next to the sauna or cool down your body with some crushed ice in a special cabine. There is also a Hamam. I din't use the Hamam, but it looks fine.

When you want to visit points of interest on the island...there are a lot of taxi's at the entrance of the hotel and everywhere on the roads. I took a rental car to travel from the airport to the hotel and the rest of the places I visited.

Tips to visit:
Cabo Girão (Cabo Girão is a lofty sea cliff located along the southern coast of the island of Madeira. Cabo Girão is a popular lookout point, with a glass-floored viewing platform.)

Pico do Arieiro (Pico do Arieiro, at 1818 m high, is Madeira island's third highest peak.)

Room Tip: I stayed at the room with mountain view. When I looked out of my balcony, I could see the mountain o...

On arrival upon checking in, whilst the man who was dealing with us, he decided to speak and welcome previous guests speaking on several occassions over mum and I which is very rude. Room 128 twin bedded room near lift as requested. Disabled room 2 large single beds with duvet, flat screen tv with large channel choice, digital safe no charge, chair and stool in room.there is a fridge in the room with a mimi bar service. large balcony but chairs very low. afternoon sun.large bathroom raised toilet and walk in shower, stool, hair dyer, make up mirror, complimentary toiletries. Beds comfy. Robes good size and great for using to go to pool.

Breakfast long walk from rooms, large room overlooking outdoor pool and ocean. Excellent choice, cereals, fruit, cheese, ham, jams, yoghurt, bread, rolls, cakes, cooked selection, pancakes, omelettes, etc can be very busy and noisy when a lot of people eating at the same time. Also sometimes you have to queue for tables. First morning plates we had used were sitting there when we went to get other food, but that service improved during the stay with plates being cleared

Dockside restaurant and bar had lunch on our first day both had espada fish, the waiter took the discount card and brought it back. He had the room number, so we assumed the transaction was finished, so we went to leave and I was called over saying I hadn't paid the bill which I presumed had been charged to the room as they had taken the number. Whilst trying to sort this out the waiter and the woman decided to talk about us in Portuguese, bad idea as I speak portuguese, which I told them before leaving as I told them it was wrong to discuss their guests in this way.

Dinner ate one evening in the bar lounge, lovely food and attentive service. Tuna baguette and salad nicoise with 2 drinks

Indoor pool good temperature relaxing areas around pool. Didn't use other facilities.

This is a 5 star hotel however on our experience would rate it as a 4 star, simply due to the attitude of some of the staff.

Please disregard the negatives for this hotel - you will be fine here. Granted it might not be a full-on 5* to English standards BUT this is still a VERY GOOD hotel with friendly staff, all doing their best for the tourist, if on rather a large scale. IF you are looking for fault, you will find it, but then don't overlook all it does have going for it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and a big part of this was because of the hotel. It is a charming island and feels safe and calm, and quite unlike any other resort I've been to in Europe. It wasn't as old-fashioned or just for the elderly and old-fashioned as I expected! Enjoy...

IN A NUTSHELL RE HOTEL
We liked: lush grounds and views; some of the design features; the pool area; views from room; Sky TV (including Sky & BBC News, BBC1,2 & ITV), fridge; aircon; hairdryer; comfy big beds, pillows and linen; breakfast options and quality (excellent for this fussy vegetarian and whilst it might be repetitive, the choice was fairly wide and consistent and was constantly replenished); free bubbly daily with breakfast; the staff turned a blind-eye to taking a few food items for later; clothes line in the bathroom for hand-washing (you are asked not to put washing on the balcony); use of white bathrobes (hanging in your bedroom); met with drink at reception on arrival; indoor pool is free (though we didn’t use it); Happy Hour is 7:30-8:30pm - when drinks become reasonably priced.

We didn’t like:
-We did hear that the evening meals weren't up to scratch but did not experience it firsthand. Bit of a surprise really as we thought the breakfasts were pretty good. My advice would be to do the B&B thing and then eat out locally.
-We thought our bathroom floor, whilst swept, needed a deeper clean (but everything else seemed clean).
-Take a travel kettle and teabags - hotel drinks prices are expensive.

IN A NUTSHELL RE MADEIRA
We liked:
- Funchal. The hotel is brilliantly located with walks either into Funchal or west, out away from the centre. Both ways have a huge choice of bars and restaurants. They vary in price but have menus outside. You could eat somewhere different every day for differing amounts.
-English is generally widely spoken/understood.
-The buildings, history, plants, trees, flowers are magical.
-The early June Flower Festival when the streets were filled with a pavement of flowers and followed by a procession.
- Botanical Gardens (cost 5 euros); cable car to Monte (10 euros one way); Monte; Toboggan run from Monte (cost 30 euros/couple); walking/exploring on foot the streets. We walked back from the toboggan and also back from the Botanical Gardens - very, very steep but about 30 mins walk. Bus ride to Botanical Gardens is just under 2 euros each from bus terminus. Military museum/old Governor's house free tours at certain times - check these out. It only takes 30 mins but is interesting.
-Mango and Greek yoghurt ice creams at The Ritz.
-Watching the lizards that appear everywhere.
-Sufficient supermarkets for topping up beer or chocolate supplies to keep in hotel fridge!

We didn’t like:
-Pressure from people selling timeshare. Just tell them no and keep walking. We even had a card pushed under our hotel door twice to tempt us to drinks as we believe the Pestana is in the timeshare chain.
-At end of May into June it could still be cool although this was unusual for them. (Some days it was glorious.)
-Public loos don’t have seats, so be prepared to hover!

ADVISE YOU to:
-Take sturdy footwear for all the walking that you need to do unless staying in the hotel. This includes sturdy evening wear - forget high heels unless staying in the hotel. Apart from the incline of some of the hills, the paving design is uneven.
-Take cover-up options for evenings and if the days are cool – it is not always really hot. Up in the hills Monte was drizzly with sunshine.
-Take travel kettle - you can buy milk for drinks and store in fridge.

Room Tip: We faced the west side in room 402 which is not over the gardens, but it was still stunning views pa...

June 2013. Never a 5 star hotel in a hundred years...more like a 3 star! Excellent location but that is all the hotel offers. We paid for half board which was a waste of time because the food was so dreadful we had to dine elsewhere most evenings. There were always long queues at breakfast and the food was always cold. As for the island, its a lovely, idyllic place but incredibly boring once you've done the normal tourist exploring for 2 or 3 days. If you like an English beer (even in cans) forget it.....you can have Coral lager or nothing. The only place that offers Guinness, Heineken and normal "English" food is Moynihans Irish Bar in Funchal. If you visit Madeira make sure you go there. Overall, glad we went for the experience but will not re-visit.

Room Tip: Book a garden room at the back of the hotel and you'll also get a sea view

just stayed half board for a week on a second floor garden room . Hotel clean and friendly, nice pool and spa plenty to see and do or chilax. went to casino show Big band - great night make sure you book . I have read some negative reviews however apart from the beef being to rare or to many pepper salads for the blue rinse demographic nothing else to complain about ! For what you pay and what you get absolutely fine and perfect place to stay and the food is good. My only gripe is the internet and the faff of codes to log in and code changes and only in the lobby is way below what a 5 star hotel offers these days . I think Oscar's design holds up today and is a iconic landmark on the island and easy identifiable from road , sea and air ! and would recommend anyone to stay there and book casino show . dont forget happy hour for cocktails in the evening

Room Tip: try and get flor 2 or above and garden /sea views - but all have nice balconies i think

We have stayed at this hotel four times in the past eight years in both standard rooms and junior suites, bring other members of the family on two occasions. We have stayed in many other 4 and 5 star hotels so can make a direct comparison.
The hotel is definitely 5 star but at a 4 star price. It is very clean with excellent facilities and good staff.
We always do B&B preferring to visit the many nearby restaurants in the evening. The hotel is THE most convenient for walking into Funchal. Breakfasts are always of a high standard with a huge variety of food available and even when it's not they often will accommodate (e.g. Very nice poached eggs).
The indoor spa and pool is very luxurious and the views from the high quality outdoor pool are great.
We will no doubt return for a fifth visit.
