Excellent staff, extensive quality food for breakie (we were B&B), indoor and outdoor pools great, rooms good size with balcony, well located. Probably not a 5* star in UK terms but a very good 4* and would definately recommend. Small Spar shop 2 min walk away to buy beer/wine/snacks and keep in room fridge that saved ££. Reception booked good resturants and car for us. I'd recommend hiring a car and going up to the mountains. Book from early afternoon for 24 hours and you can do 2 half-day trips. Excellent value and experience. Mozarts by cable-car excellent resturant!

Please don't think by the title of this review that we didn't enjoy our stay at the Pestana Casino. We love Madeira and we have been many times. We had a junior suite with lovely views and the pool, location, ambience and staff were lovely. Breakfast was great but the real drawback with the food was the price of eating in the hotel, especially by the pool. €13.50 for a baguette!!! There is a lovely cafe called Tofa across the street from the Pestana which does toasted sandwiches for €1.30, coffee, coke, chips etc just to top up in the day.

Bad bits: I had to complain to the manager as whenever my family went out to the pool, it was a scramble to get sunbeds but more importantly parasols. The weather was really hot and as you can imagine, with two children you need to be careful. Each day we almost had to beg borrow or steal a parasol to get shade. There are trees off the decked areas, but you end up dragging sunbeds across the pool area and things do fall out of trees, nothing dangerous but leaves and other debris. I asked the pool attendant if they had parasols but he said they were all out. Out of interest, I walked around counting them and there were a total of 42, in a supposedly 5 star hotel!!! I said to the manager, this can't be right, the basic premise of a hotel in the sun is you get a sun lounger and some shade. He did say they were getting more but we never saw any increase. Such a shame as we have been in smaller hotels (Regency Cliff Madeira which was excellent by the way) and there was at least one parasol per two sunbeds.

The other problem we noticed was the mens toilet in the reception area smelled really bad, all the time we were there. Not sure what was going on there.

All in all a good holiday but we won't be staying at the Pestana Casino again. The Gillespies.

We booked 2 rooms here on half board for a family holiday in August.

positives - lovely friendly staff, very clean rooms and big comfy beds, excellent service -wonderful location - very lovely view from the pool - great view from the sun beds over the port -(loads to watch and keep you amused if you like to watch the world go by ! ) - huge choice at breakfast- excellent choice of salads and puddings at supper-great spa and treatments-good sized indoor pool- good lunches served in the cafe by the pool. ( We are very particular about food but were very satisfied )

Room for improvement - no wifi in the room but it was available in the public areas- balcony furniture a bit tired - bit of a wait at check in - wardrobe hanging space quite small - shower pressure a bit lame - feel like I am nit picking though because all in all I can thoroughly recommend this hotel as a very comfortable, good all round and certainly value for money but quality hotel. We would come back ( and we are fussy!! )

This is a unique hoel from the sixties which has been extensively renovated. I would imagine you would either love or loathe its unique design, I found it a please ant change from the modern blocks which can be found in any resort. very attentive staff from arrival to departure made for a most pleasant one week break. All public areas including toilets and rooms were immaculately clean. Breakfast buffet would be hard to fault as ther was something for all tastes, although the cooked section was little used by myself. Travelled on a late deal with Atlantic Holidays , who are owned by the hotel company. half board deal was excellent value as the advertised price of the buffet dinner was 29 Euros per person per nought. again a wide choice of options and no significant queuing at any meal time
gardens are very well kept and a sun lounger was available on every occasion when we went poolside. a very relaxing break in a location situated near to the main shopping area. As with the rest of the resort situated uphill from the town but walkable at a gentle stroll. I have made a point of never returning to the same hotel twice, but this is one I feel I may have to revisit in the future.

Room Tip: Our room was on top floor and road noise was minimal. Air con functioned well enough for prevailing...

This hotel is in a good location, as it is a short distance from town and also close to many restaurants. It is aesthetically pleasing with beautiful interior areas as well as external. The outdoor swimming pool area and gardens are particularly stunning. The rooms are clean and very comfortable. However there are some negatives including limited cooked breakfast choices especially for vegetarians, inadequate number and cleanliness of lifts and minor drainage problems resulting in unpleasant smells once or twice. Additionally, service at breakfast needs to improve slightly. This is a good 4.5* hotel and once the issues mentioned are solved, it may reach the level it is rated at (5*)! Overall we had a very good 7 day stay and I would recommend this hotel.

For our trip to Madeira we stayed at Pestana as recommended by a travel agent here in US. I think that for the price it was a great hotel.Very affordable. Pool area and snack bar at pool were average. Rooms were small but clean. Breakfast came with the room and there was a very large selection. Overall I would stay there again if I was on a budget.

We booked last minute and were happy with the location of the hotel, the staff were friendly and very helpful. Our room was adequate bathroom needed updating broken tiles and very tired looking. The breakfast was excellent and the overall facilities were good. Only problem was in the Spa Area a place for relaxing Sauna and Steam Room and a lovely pool, but children under the age of 10 came in and ran riot in the area and 3 staff members just looked on, children should be allowed but accompanied by an adult it is dark in there and shallow and not a safe place for children to play. The location of the hotel is good plenty of restaurants nearby or a 15 minute walk to the Old Town of Funchal, plenty to see and do. The people of madeira are genuinely friendly.

Room Tip: We chose a top floor overlooking the casino a bit noisy when people leave at 4 in the morning but th...
