As you can see from our photos, this hotel complex is beautiful, stylish; I would say that it has been recently refurbished; it is also very clean. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained.
The staff are polite and helpful.
Guests at both the Miramar Garden and the Miramar Village can use all facilities of both joined hotels.
The breakfast was very varied - together with a continental breakfast, there's plenty of hot food choices, pancakes, various types of breads/rolls/croissants etc, proper cereals not the cheaper supermarkets own branded stuff, loads of fresh juices, different coffees and teas etc,
We didn't eat the evening meal; it was a buffet but didn't look too appealing.
We booked a Superior Studio. The room was very stylish and spacious.
The kitchenette was very small and not very well kitted out but a visit to reception to discuss the matter solved this. Our balcony was only small with a wall instead of railings; this meant that we didn't sit out on the balcony. However, this was probably due to the studio being on the 4th floor as plenty of other balconies had railings instead and would have been more pleasant to sit out on. The air-conditioning consists of a ceiling fan, which is particularly dangerous - if I had raised my arms to take off a t-shirt I would have had my hands chopped off!! Our room was cleaned, the beds made and fresh toiletries and towels in the bathroom, every daily. There is a safe in the room but a 12 euro charge for the week. There was also a hairdryer in the bathroom. Take a travel iron with you as there is a charge per day if you hire one from reception.
The public areas are clean and well maintained. There are plenty of sun loungers, but there is a charge for parasols.
There is a choice of 3 pools, 2 outdoors and 1 indoors. There is also a table tannis room.
As a personal trainer it was important to have a gym facility. The gym is adequate for a workout with several different exercise machines and dumbbells from 5 - 25kgs. Free towels are also provided in the gym/jacuzzi.
The pool bar is expensive for both food and drink. However, just a very short walk around the corner from the hotel is a very nice glass fronted restaurant "X Tonel" - turn left out of the main entrance of the hotel, and a 5 minute walk around the corner, opposite the car park for Reid's Palace, situated together with a few newsagents and a lovely cake shop. X Tonel do a really tasty pasta dish together with excellent chicken sandwiches. The owner even made and wrapped up some chicken sandwiches for our return journey home.
You can turn left out of the hotel's main entrance and take the 25 minute walk down the hill to the new and old towns. You might want to take a taxi back up the long steep hill though.
If you turn right out of the hotel's main entrance then you will find plenty of other eateries.
Restaurants we recommend are "A Bica" and "The Steak House". "A Bica" is in the old town. However, it is a small restaurant down a small side street so you will need a small map (you can get a free map from the small qiosk outside the Casino hotel which on the way down to the new & old towns. Ask the staff to pinpoint "A Bica" in hospital street. Another resaurant we recommend is "The Steak House". If you turn right out of the hotels main entrance and follow the road until you come to a hill on your left, going down to some restaurants and a small shopping arcade. At the very end of the arcade is a supermarket (Pingo Doce). Take the stone steps upstairs and walk to the end of the arcade - you will then be at the small "Steak House" restaurant.
Transfers from and back to the airport we arranged from the UK months before our departure. www.madeira-airport-transfers.com the company confirmed everything via email, you only need to pay the driver on arrival, the prices were very reasonable (23 euros per trip), the driver was waiting on our arrival with a board with our name on it and the return driver was on time too.
The airport is by the side of a mountain and as such the winds are very turbulant and tend to play havok with incoming flights. It is the 3rd most dangerous airport in the world!! The 3 1/2 hour flight time turned into 7 hours as we had to refuel in Faro, Portugal just in case we had multiple unsuccessful chances at landing then we would have had to land at a nearby island. It is a bit scary but hopefully this won't put you off going to this beautiful island.

Room Tip: most of the rooms have a pool view but the lower floors have their view obscured with plants.

On booking this hotel I was eagerly anticipating our stay as the general consensus of opinion was that it was a fantastic hotel. I have to say that I agree 100% - this was probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. Everything from the check in, through to the room quality, the facilities and the food was perfect. The staff are, without exception, friendly, efficient and obviously happy in their job.

The hotel has large hotel facilities, but doesn't actually 'feel' large - the buildings are not high rise, and are quite art decor in style so look very attractive - not your usual glass palace. The grounds are very well maintained and the gardens are lovely.

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to most people, with the exception of those with older children or teenagers in their party - there are no facilities geared specifically towards them - in fact, with a large proportion of the time share guests in particular being older guests, younger people will likely feel very out of place. But then, Madeira itself is not likely to be a destination choice for those with young kids or teenagers.

If I was to have one constructive comment I would say the paid for extras at the hotel are all very expensive. In my opinion, the hotel is missing a trick as few people are going to stay in the hotel bar when the prices are roughly double what you will pay in the nearby bars (4 euros for an orange juice and 3 for a small water) and if you are not booked on a half board basis and look at the restaurant with a view to paying per meal, then it looks expensive when considering the wide variety of other restaurants in the vicinity. For this reason, both the bar and the restaurant are obviously underused.

You will find that a large part of the complex is made up of time share apartments rather than single booking hotel rooms - this approach seems to be very common in the area. Therefore, there are consistent attempts to get you to view and sign up to such deals. We were never approached directly within the hotel, and the reps that approach you whilst out and about are never over pushy if you are not interested, but it is worthwhile being aware that some of the local trip agencies are owned and / or tied to the local hotel chains so if you don't want to feel pressured to take a time share viewing, in return for a free trip, then choose your booking outlets carefully.

We stayed at Pestana Miramar hotel over Easter. It is close to the Marina, downtown, supermarkets and busstops. The rooms were comfortable with a kitchenette,a microwave would have been useful. The staff exuded happiness and the service was exemplary. Luigi Pizzaria, the Gelato shop and Marco deserve special mention as they left an indelible memory with top quality service and taste. The west island tour with breathtaking cliff top views is unmissable. Lunch @ Siaxal was authentic Madeiran sea food. The cable car ride, Sailing with dolphins on Sea born, the fresh sea food at marina restaurants, and the distinctive flora of Madeira makes it the Hawaii of Europe!!!

Seven days on a Madeiran fish and fruit diet is highly recommended. No need to fly home, just dive in and swim for the shore!
Seriously, this was a great holiday from start to finish. Our first time on the amazing island of Madeira and I am full of praise for its standards, culture and scenery. Atlantic holidays was the travel company which organised this trip and we would certainly go with them again.
And so to fish. Two restaurants which stand out for us as providing good value are the Chalet (opposite the Carlton hotel) and O jangos in the old town. Thanks to both places for a thoroughly enjoyable eating experience.

This is a good hotel in a perfect position. We had a 2 bed apartment on the 7th floor which had outstanding views over the harbour but be careful, some of the room have no view at all as some on the ground floor have huge trees in front of the window and obstruct all views. The apartment was clean and spacious, the kitchen adequate but could have done with a few more utensils, the cooker and hob took forever to heat up but as we only used it the two evenings we stayed in as the football was on TV (BBC & ITV both available) it wasn't a problem.Couldn't actually find anywhere lunchtime to get a drink or snack on site but the Village Hotel next door was excellent.Check in was smooth until we were informed that we had to pay 50 Euros for utility charges we don't use 50 Euros a week in the winter let along Spring so where this rip off charge came from we don't know but we had to pay it - I was less than pleased and wouldn't have booked the Miramar had we been told in advance. All in all tho a good hotel probably a 3+ star not 4. Weather was excellent and can recommend Madeira 100% as it's a beautiful Island with very friendly people
